Ex-Mufulira Wanderers midfielder Alex Musungu has died at the age of 47.
Musungu died on Wednesday morning at Ronald Ross Hospital in Mufulira after an illness.
His friend and former Mighty team-mate Damiano Mutale broke the sad news on Wednesday morning.
“In Mufulira we have a funeral coach Alex Musungu died this morning around 03:00 at Ronald Ross Hospital,” Mutale said.
Muzungu has left behind a wife and five children.
“We have lost man who knew what he wanted to achieve in football,” Mutale said.
The deceased launched his career at Green Buffaloes in Lusaka before joining Wanderers in the early 1990s.
Musungu was part of the Wanderers team that won the FAZ Super Division title back to back in the years 1995 and 1996.
Upon retiring just before the year 2000, Musungu went into coaching and managed several clubs including Wanderers.
He also coached Kitwe United, Mufulira Blackpool and Mining Rangers.
His last coaching post was at Division One North club Gomes Wanderers of Ndola earlier this year.
MISRIP. As a Mighty fan, I convey my deepest sympathy to the Musungu family on this untimely death as I enjoyed watching him under the tutelage of one of Zambia’s best defenders Ashios Melu.

I went to school with Late Alex “Mfede” Musungu at Pemba Boys, what a player in his days, could overlap and stay upfront and be comfortable, he actually became a defender at school after being a striker in his early days in Monze playing for Monze Swallows.

Being a FULLTIME AND DIE HARD SUPPORTER of mighty may i have this oppotunity to pass my deepest sympathy to the late ALEX METAL MUSUNGU, We will always remember you with that unstopable shot you scored against orlando pirates in jburg to progress mighty in caf only to lose to ZAMALEK.
Very sad news indeed! I remember Alex very well; I played against him when he was at Monze Sec school. He was a great player in the making at the time. And he didn’t disappoint as he went on to play at the highest level in Zambian football. Very calm, reserved but very assured player and individual. It was only last month I was asking an old friend if they knew Alex’s whereabouts. Will be sorely missed. Mhsrip
Rest in peace Ba METAL so sad.
