The Cosafa Castle Cup faces an uncertain future after sponsors South African Breweries announced today they are ending their the 11-year old relationship with the regional event beginning in 2008.
“The South African Breweries (SAB) today announced that they have declined the offer to renew their sponsorship of the annual Southern African Championship with the Council of Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa),” Cosafa sad on its official site.
SAB added that they were delighted with the results from the sponsorship over their 11 year tenure and particularly thanked the members of Cosafa for taking part and the executives of Cosafa who ensured the tournament’s success.
SAB went on to say that it would remain active sponsors of a number of Cosafa member National Association as well as several national leagues.
Over the 11 years of its existance, the Cosafa Castle Cup has been won by Zambia, Angola and Zimbabwe who have all been crowned regional champions 3-times each since the inaugural tournament in 1997.
Zambia are the current Cosafa Castle Cup defending champions after beating Angola 2-0 in Lusaka on October 21 last year.
Meanwhile, Zambia is set to begin its defence of the title in a planned semifinal mini-tournament that will be played on a round-robin league basis to decide this year’s winner.
The semifinal mini-tournament will be held at a date and venue to be announced soon by Cosafa and will include Mozambique, South Africa and Botswana who won their respective quarterfinal Group A, B and C mini-tournament games.
Zambia were on bye by virtue of being the defending champion
