Police in Nakonde  have arrested a 37 year old woman for allegedly killing her day old baby.

MMD Nakonde central ward councillor Christopher Nyoni confirmed the development to
ZANIS in Nakonde today.

Mr Nyoni who is also Nakonde district council chairman, said the woman was arrested
on Monday by TAZARA police.

This was after they had picked the body of a day old baby that was found floating in
Nsekwa river near Nakonde TAZARA railway station.

Mr Nyoni explained that the matter was reported to TAZARA police by a man who
suspected his wife to have thrown her bay into the river after she had given birth.

The named woman identified as Joyce Namukoko of Chuyanga in Nakonde has since been
charged with first degree murder.

She is remanded at Nakonde police station and will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, police had a tough time to prevent a highly charged mob which wanted to
mete out instant justice on the woman suspected to have killed her day old baby.

This was after  word went round that police had arrested the woman believed to have
killed her own baby boy.

Police in full riot gear had a tough time controlling a highly charged mob that was
demanding to be given the woman so that it could execute instant justice on her for
the brutal manner in which she allegedly killed her own baby.

The suspect allegedly used sticks to beat the baby to death before throwing her in
the river.

She also broke the skull of the baby.
