POLICE in Ndola have arrested People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president George Mpombo’s 17-year-old son for allegedly shooting his lover to death with a pistol when he learnt that she was pregnant.
The accused is alleged to have later beheaded the 17-year-old girl before dumping the head in a bush.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda confirmed the incident in an interview yesterday and identified the deceased as Ruth Phiri of Pamodzi Township in Ndola.
Mrs Chanda said police have also picked three of the suspect’s accomplices identified as Kennedy Mumba, 21, Brian Kachinga, 26, and a 16-year-old boy after he disclosed that they aided the crime.
She said Mr Mpombo’s son, whose name has been withheld, admitted having allegedly shot his lover after she told him that she was pregnant by him and that he buried her body in Chiwala before dumping her head in a bush near Mulungushi bus station within Ndola.
“We have exhumed a headless body of a 17-year-old teenager of Pamodzi Township in Ndola. This girl is believed to have been pregnant by Mpombo’s son. So, when she went to tell him that she was pregnant for him, he got upset and grabbed a pistol from the house which he used to shoot her,” Mrs Chanda said.
It is alleged that “after shooting her, he cut off her head, which he concealed in a plastic bag before dumping it in the bush, while he buried her body in Chiwala area in Masaiti”.
“Unfortunately, the body is in a decomposed state, but we have picked up both the body and head,” Mrs Chanda said.
She also said Mr Mpombo’s son allegedly led police to the scenes of crime.
The boy has been charged with murder and will appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, two people have died while six others are nursing serious injuries in Isoka District Hospital after they were involved in a road traffic accident on the Isoka-Muyombe road.
Muchinga Province police commissioner Auxensio Daka said the accident happened when a light truck Mitsubishi Canter collided with a Toyota Noah which was being driven by Noah Sikanyika.
Mr Daka identified one of the deceased as Sydney Munthali, 34. The second victim is not yet identified.
The driver of the truck is on the run.
In another incident, a 22 -year- old woman of Kwacha in Kitwe has died after falling off a moving motor vehicle.
Copperbelt commissioner of police Charity Katanga said Mary Musonda died on the spot on Wednesday on Enos Chomba Avenue after she tried to change positions while on board a moving vehicle.
Ms Musonda, who was seated at the back of a van, a Toyota Hilux, which was being driven by John Kaseya, 41, suffered head injuries.
