Zambian embassy

Share

Zambians are now becoming well traveled and if you ever went to a faraway place like Hong Kong for example, chances are you will bump into a Zambian if you looked hard enough.

I did not want to be one of the less traveled Zambians and decided to travel to Bangkok with an acquaintance of mine – Big Jo. We were first to spend some days in Johannesburg at a place called Hilbrow. My well traveled friend Big Jo, told me they had cheap accommodation and would be the best place to stay, you see we had limited funds. Big Jo’s neighbor’s cousin was doing some business in Bangkok and we were going to help him sell some of the “stuff” in Johannesburg and Zambia. I knew northwestern province like the back of my hand and I was going to make millions of kwacha selling the “stuff” there. Well that’s what Big Jo said. I did ask him what we would be selling and he said clothes, sofas, spare parts etc.

I later got to learn that Big Jo had conveniently left out some vital information about Hilbrow, like it was a dangerous place to be! But how was an innocent boy from Kasempa supposed to know such details.

So we traveled in a dirty “luxury coach from Lusaka to Johannesburg. When we arrived I had never seen such a big bus station in my life! It was called Park station. I thought when become rich I’ll build one like this in Solwezi. We then took a mini bus to Hilbrow. As we drove another mini bus driver waved a gun at us. It was then my legs began shaking. Despite that, we arrived safely in Hilbrow, but just in time to hear more gun shots.
“Big Jo lets go back,” I cried. He, like all the other people around was calm. I was later to learn this was a way of life here. We had barely disembarked from the bus when a group of men approached us.
“Butuka!” Big Jo shouted. But before my wobbly legs could move, all my possessions were taken from me. I shook like a leaf, at least I was unharmed I thought. A few moments later Big Jo resurfaced. My passport, the driver’s license I had bought in Lusaka and all my money were stolen. At least Big Jo had kept the air ticket to Bangkok.

We were about to go to the police station when a Zimbabwean man approached us.
“I saw what happened,” he said “but if you go to the police they will think you are an illegal immigrant.”
Big Jo suggested we try the Zambian embassy. He said they would take care of me. As for him he had to proceed to Bangkok .The next day Big Jo left me at the Zambian embassy. I walked in and was looked at suspiciously by the beautiful lady at reception. I explained what happened and she said I needed a police report to verify what I was saying. I told her I had no transport money, no passport and no clothes. If they could just organize a passport and drivers license for me I could join Big Jo in Bangkok. She laughed at me so hard you would have thought she was watching one of the late “maximo’s” comedies. At this point I had had enough. I broke down in my mother tongue. This attracted two gentlemen from the next office. The lady told them I wanted a passport and drivers license from them. They too laughed at me. This again attracted an elderly gentleman, whom I’ll never forget. At least he showed more compassion for me.
To cut a long story short I never made it to Bangkok. I am back in Kasempa.I don’t have a passport. I tried to buy a drivers license from Mr. Mwape but I’m told things are now computerized so its difficult. As old as I am, I have to take a driving test. I’m told I have to reverse through drums on a hill!

So, I never want to travel outside Zambia again. I do not know what the function of a Zambian embassy is, if you can’t even obtain necessary documents from them when you are abroad. As for Big Jo I never heard from him. Never trust someone with the name Big Jo I guess!

  1. Interesting story! Did this really happen? If so, is there part two to this story? e.g. “THE RETURN OF BIG JO!” or “ADVENTURES OF A KASEMPAN! KINE! KINE!”

  2. As an individual who is well travelled in many parts of the world, I feel sorry for Joe. Before you go to any country, you need to find all details on location, security, etc. I have seen many people stranded in foreign countries because they do not do their homework.
The Zambian govt. needs to improve the quality of people working in embassies abroad. Many of them were not picked on merit and their performance is terrible. One of my company’s requirements is that I need to register with my embassy if I am staying in the country for more than a week. I get so annoyed when I approach them as most of them have carried the “I do not care attitude abroad”.

  3. zed embassies are very unprofessional and an embarrasment to us real zambians who cares about our country dearly.I never bother register with one as it is just a waste of time. The diplomatic mission is a dumping site of finished politicians, cadres and relatives of the presidents and his cronies…

  4. I once visited a cousin whose husband had a top job at the zambian embassy. They lived in a mansion in a posh surburb. My mulamu said casually the zambian govt was renting that house and was costing probably an equivalent of $2500 a month. It would actually have been cheaper in the long run if they had bought the house. I think embassies waste a lot of money and don’t even serve us zambians abroad. Why do I need to fly to zambia every time my passport expires or my child needs a passport?

  5. Well, as a nation we need a serious self evaluation. DO we really need these embassies and do Zambians get their tax money’s worth. Is it okay to continue funding finished politicians as somebody put it. Should we just privatize this function of govt?

Looks like these embassies just help those who work their and there is really no professionalism in the way they execute their duties. Maybe something should be put in the constitution so that we get real diplomats to serve in these embassies if at all we need them.

Right now they are just an extended version of the ZAMTROP Account.

  6. # 7 Big Joe was last spotted in a brothel in Bangkok surrounded by lady-boys, enjoying the spoils of his lucrative Zambian passport and driving license scam with his South African co-conspirators!

  7. This is critical South Africa must be a very dangerous place to live. This reminds me of two other stories of Zambians being swindled in SA. Recently Honourable Daniel Munkombwe lost 10 000 US dollars on his way back from China. Last a group of children were lobed from a train of all their items when small children started throwing stones to a moving locomotive. The situation is vulnerable and dangerous. Another story is of our athletes returing from All Africa Games they lost their baggage. I only thought this happening only in Nigeria. Anyway some countries are dangerous. Pipo will come in pretend to be policy officers and kidnapp someone anyway. Over the incedence at the embassy its a difficult situation for the officers to issue a new document without a police statement. You lost documents can be used for murder or swindle of someone that is why we have to inform the police and the immigration officer. Look you over your story take a bit of adpation in in Lusaka before you travel

  8. ctd. outside Zambia. Also how can you trust someone like that without knowing his passed history. Anyway in China Big Jo he does such business he must already been hanged because there they dont play. On the other hand we have to be very careful with whom we intermingo take the case of the Zambian girl facing death in Singapore for being found in position of drugs she was to supply a Ghanian national there. Where our Radios advertise over taking jobs in South Africa without proper channels you dont be surprised to endup in big problems like that Mutinta announcement for public awareness.

  9. Who said that you have to travel to Zambia to renew a passport when was this law passed some us we are not aware. If this was the case I would have asked the two imigrations today who were on air talking about the dubios business that has sprung off in Zambia where some people name themselves consultant in the migration proceedings. Zambians you should not let such important institutions into private hands. If anything lawyers should handle such cases or else we are heading on collision.

  10. I agree with HK and GLUCO, our foreign service need serious reform. After being starved of nshima for 13 months in some location in Japan, I paid a visit down to the Zambian emabssy a weekend before our independence day to ask for nshima. They couldnt help me. Maybe i was asking for too much.

  11. The only thing these embassies do well is throw parties! Hold on, let me not be too hard on them. I recently read of these people stopping the Germany immigration officers from forcefully detaining a Zambian after she strayed to the entry point at frankfurt airport without an entry visa while enroute to Bruxelles. I have also heard of these guys protecting students in China from forced deportation on flimsy reasons such as teaching english to a neighbour without first notifying the authorities. Some probably do their jobs, don’t they?

  12. Not all are useless you are right like the Zambian Mission in Japan, Australia, Germany etc they helped in finding investors.

  13. Everybody does work, they should more to earn their money. I doubt embassies are capable of finding investors. How exactly does this work, and do we have any good record of this at ZPA?

  14. Zambian embassies are wasting a lot of money for shoddy services to their nationals overseas. They are sometimes unhelpful. Easy talks about Zambian mission in Australia. Where is it located? Is the former the Zambian Embassy house in Canberra still being rented or was it sold? I have lived in Australia for years and I have never had any contact from any Zambian mission in Australia ever since Mr Mfula left at UNIP lost power. We used to receive information from the embassy then. But I don’t know where they took our names and addresses afterwards.

  15. the poor performance of the embassies is historical.they were used as alternative job centres for political failures and instruments of reward and appeasement. The functions of our foreign missions have been “lost in translation”.A major overhaul is required with competent personnel deployed to perform specific tasks in particular regions.A Trade Attache must have his contract renewal linked to the volume of trade he “organises” during his time at any mission. These missions in their present form are a remarkable drain on our meagre resources and it is about time we started getting value for our money. There are so many qualified Zambians in the countries where we have so-called embassies….employ them…it might be cheaper and you would have already “acclimatized” staff who already know their way around.Just a thought !!

  16. I live abroad and want to get a driving licence from zed but my contact person back home says the LPM govt is serious about corruption and its now impossible to organise a license. Please is this true?

  17. How can get a licence in your absence its just logical to be there becuase you must be tested how to drive, remember being on the road you you risk other peoples lives. You have to go test driving and pass. Unless you want to renew your driving licence this could have been different. However if you have been away for long you must be tested again.

  18. Why do you need a license from Zed when you are living abroad? You get a license in the country where you are living and get an International Driving License when you travel to Zed. Licenses from most countries can also be used for at least a month. I sympathise with my colleague about renewing passports from abroad. Apart from being impossible they keep changing all the time. Its just cheaper to change nationality and use the phone to get your passport.

  19. Zambians living abroad are the most incorrupible and law abiding individuals. That’s why a zed passport is Gold to most Africans aspiring to live overseas. It’s sad to learn their are exceptions like #19. The license system and the vehicle registration system has now been computerised. Let’s not incourage rogue behaviour and let the system blossom into some worthwhile database.

  20. Yes its ok if they have the qualification. Remember the environment influences your life. you stop this tribal lines. If you want to work at the embassy since Mwanawasa came into power he has there is a Programme at UNZA being taught for those who want to go into foreign services.

  21. #24 that is nepotism at its best.Easy I’m surprised at the way you answered anonymous. He/she didn’t even mention any tribe or show ambitions to work in an embassy. Its very unlikely this mother/daughter team got their jobs because of their qualifications.what are the odds the government would randomly pick a mother /daughter team and send them to the same embassy? Hmm its fishy! which embassy is that by the way?

  22. Yeap
    Lets face the reality.
Zambian Embassies are not meant to help Zambians living or studying in those countries NO NO NO.Not at all.
They are meant to help nationals of those countries to have access to Zambia in whichever the condition. They are meant to arrange trips for politicians to visit those countries. They are meant to help the bursaries committee pay students their monthly top ups.
They are not meant to help Zambian students handle their hardships, they cannot even accommodate a stranded zambian who goes to collect his ticket on his return home and has been delayed by them even for a week. They cant even ask him where he is spending his nights in the capital after travelling for 38 hours by train. They cannot even send a sweeper to hold a simple party to congratulate the graduating students especially that they are partriotic enough to decide go work for Zambia despite the peanuts.
They dont even care about any mistreatment faced by students from school administrations.

  23. They dont even know that students are part and parcel of the development of the our economy.
    Students barely know their Ambassador.
If you try to visit other country’s embassies, the Ambassador’s and counsellor’s offices are the warmest and most parental offices of all.More than the reception. This is a dream that will never be realized in a zambian mission abroad.
The Zambian Government should realize that, they know things on paper but students know things practically and through students alot concerning investments and other international issues eg agreements to be made between one country and Zambia, student can provide good and vlued data to profit our Nations.
Oh my God,Still sleeping are those Diplomats.Well its not their problem but all pipo have their duties and responsibilities, meaning helping Zambians abroad is not indicated on their job responsibilities.WHO GIVES THEM?
Hey,one Ambassador once asked a first secretary;hey what problem has that student brought,we are so busy

  24. here and we have more important things to do.Not handing stupid students, its not our job.Actually that Ambassador is a lawyer by profession…..
Another Ambassador one of a kind was more than welcoming and he would not rest if he hears no voice of a student in a week.He would invite students give the counsel, update them about home, encourage them and try to handle their academic issues. So what,,no schools took Zambian students for granted just like students from Congo,Gabon etc. They study with one heart coz their embassies are their for them.Any unclear things a diplomatic car is parked at the school’s administration office.Only order is considered.
Zed Embassy ????????????????BIG NO.I WONDER i WONDER I REALLY WONDER .
We should be well informed anyway.Zambian Embassies arent for Zambians on trips,on studies and on tour nop.
Only for political pride and negotiations.VISA na fimo fimo

  25. The front desk lady at the Zambian embassy in Pretoria is rude and so un professional i wonder if anyone has noticed this. The whole staff is very un cooperative they are just a bunch idots who dont even know why they are there.

  26. My encounter with Zed Embassy in SA gave me goose pimples. On my way to the US i stayed in JHB for sometime and i needed the services of our embassy. The place is the odd one out.The staff there treat you with contempt, i agree with # 31 the front desk lady is a monster she does not give a damn about Zambians. There is no stationery and none of the office equipment works. I actually had to offer to go and photocopy sensitive documents out of the embassy as they did not have a copier to do it at the embassy. Furthermore they were waiting for paper from Lusaka.Needless to say they had been waiting for at least a month.Going to and from Pretoria cost me more than if had decided to go to Lusaka to do it from there. Any way i have learnt my lesson and i dont intend to visit the Zambian embassy here in the US lest i go thru the same pain again

  27. #26 You should first know the background of these family. How long have they been working in foreign services. This kind of Netopism you are starting is killing the nation spirit our forefathers built. Dont just condemm everybody. I have been to various embassies in most case Zambia employees even foreigners I dont see any problem if you father is a headmaster of a school you should not go to that school. Zambians lets be genuine anyone can work anyway this not a diplomatic appointment.

  28. It is not acceptable for a mother and duaghter to work in the same Zambian office as this will lead to abuse of office. If the mother is wrong on certainm matters, the duaghter will not stand her own ground and vice versa. As for Zambian embassies, their services to Zambians are generally very poor. Tell me, which developed country will ignore the plight of it nationals abroad? While we Zambians abroad don’t depend on our embassies to meet our needs, there may be times for our embassies to assist those who are travelling and find themselves in trouble which they did not cause themselves. If for example a Zambian has been robbed of his money and passport and there’s police evidence, they should help that Zambian with a ticket and charge him or her to repay back. But in 99.9%, Zambians abroad or those who are travelling do only need some paper work help
which the embassies as others have experienced are unable to provide.

  29. What do u expect wen the Embassies r run by party cadres or political failures without any form of qualification, its a shame really

  30. #34 Timothy you are surprising me. So didnt read the story above and just stormed and write. A passport is a senstive document which cannot just be lost like that and be replaced. This one of the reason that the our friends have committeed crimanal offences using Zambia documents. This cannot be allowed its cardinal as far as I know if you approached the embassy and you can be indentified they will help you. I remember one time I had problems in Russia and the Ambassador came and met me. Actually I was to sue the Russian govt for wrong dentention. MAybe in South Africa we have a problem but it doesnt mean all embassies are the same. Last week in london the envoy in London organised a party at his residences and all Zambians leaving in the UK were invited. Whoever is tell you that its wrong for mother and daughter to work in the same office is an imbecile and has no vision. We say like father like son. How many pipo have taken the professional of their parents name them all doctors.

  31. Easy, I did not say that a Zambian passport should be given without scrutiny or proper identification. We certainly have to be careful of some friends from places like West Africa who have used Zambian documents to get to the West. Arguing that a mother and daughter should not work in the same Zambian Embassy or Commission office does not make me to be imbecile or vision-less. If you knew who I am, you would not write that. It’s ok for family members to have same profession and to work in same place like doctors as you have mentioned. They are free to work together anywhere, but they should not together in our foreign diplomatic office at the Zambian tax payers expense. Agree to disagree with me on this but don’t use bad demeaning language on me

  32. im glad you acknowledge that there is sometihng wrong with the Zambian embassy in RSA.For your own info wether you identify your self you are treated like a criminal by the embassy staff. How can it take 2 weeks just to get a temporary travel document when you have identified yourself , provided your photos and paid? i mean it is totaly ridiculus considering that the document is hand written and has no safety features. One should be able to get this document within minutes upon establishing that he is a Zambian. The embassy in South Africa is not user friendly and we wonder why it is there.

  33. #37 Timothy okay Bola panshi and Kaunda but Lesa kumulu. I cannot imagine if my daugther grow up in foreign country and she is educated and there is an opportunity at the a mission abroad to give it to her without involved of corrupt practice.Just look at the case of Chitoba and son what makes it abusive of office. Promoting your son to a senior position during probation period. My brother we have many relations working in the same office. I give an example Ariel Sharon and his son, Mitterraand and his son, KK and his children, FTJ unfortunate had bastard as a son. President of Congo and his children. Look at the defense forces, police services, The only key issue it should be a in corrupt way we are one family. I dont the background of this mother and daughter.

  34. easy, unlike your name its very difficult to follow your line of reasoning.Your friends are telling you that its not acceptable for a mother and daughter to work in positions that are government appointments and paid for using taxpayers monies. You even called those who didn’t agree with your views imbeciles.Let me define imbecile for you -A person of moderate to severe mental retardation having a mental age of from three to seven years and generally being capable of some degree of communication and performance of simple tasks under supervision. Now tell me how timothyZ, for example qualifys to be an imbecile?Wasn’t Ariel sharon a military man.If his son was also in the army it makes sense that they might work together.Dennise Luwewe and son Ponga did work together but in their professional capacities as commentators not cadre appointees!

  35. Thanks Jimmy for your constructive answer or comment to Easy. What you have wisely termed as ‘cadre appointees’ is indeed what I regard to be unacceptable. I have friends such as doctors who work together in their own companies or in other people’s private companies; and that is acceptable. But we don’t need a mother and daughter to be sent to the same Zambian foreign office. And since the daughter is a grown up person who is able to work, she should have been sent to a different foreign office if her skills were needed in a foreign service. It is good too that we Zambians learn to disagree with one another without calling each other names or insults. Those of us who have been to university and have done undergraduate or post graduate studies have learned to respect other people even when we disagree with their reasoning. That is the beauty of having a forum like this one where we would like to hear other people’s views. By from country down under.

  36. There is nothing wrong in having a mother and daughter working in a foreign mission together. If they are both qualified and their appointment is on merit why not??The onus is on the “two” to realise how uncomfortable it appears to the rest of the staff that mother and daughter work in the same mission. If their duties have nothing to do with each other..then they might as well stay employed.True professionals tend to avoid such situations but their roles at this mission may qualify as an exception.Remember that you cannot discriminate against mother or daughter and employment law is very sensitive to such issues. This topic would be such a waste of time if mother and daughter roles at the mission are completely independent of each other !!

I suppose my suggestion in submission 18 was thought of before and “locals” are being given jobs already!!

  37. My conscious would not be clear if i didn’t praise one foreign mission that came to my aid when i needed it.Whilst in the possesion of my employers, my passport went missing…the embassy staff were very friendly, professional and even though the Lusaka Passport office were their usual let down, the embassy staff kept me informed of the progress until a replacement arrived.I do enjoy lambasting govt. and political parties but i will always endeavour to forward praise where it is due….and in this case alot of praise is due and hopefully delivered!!

  38. The Original Pundit. You are right in giving praise where praise is due. I just hope and pray that many other Zambians will be treated humanely by many of our embassy staff in all our foreign missions. Those who have not been treated well in some of our Shops like the South African office which I have never visited can not give praise where praise is not due. Similarly, I can not give praise to some other staff in some of our foreign offices whom I had dealt with in the past. Government and political parties also need to be criticised where they go wrong like selling our mines or timber mills for a peanut. Nevertheless, we should also praise them when they do things right. Goodnight/day

  39. #44 Timothy and jimmy #43 Beware with me if I was abusive in my writing it could my mind you still on one person who has been taking me personally. I know Timothy you are not meant for Chainama and I have like your gentle approach to my misconduct. Please forgive me. Coming back to the topic above there is no enough data for us to critise these two. Embassy workers apart from the Ambassador and his deputy are govt workers normal at the ministry of foreign affairs. They are not appointed. I have never heard that the president or the FAM has appointed a sectrary to any embassies. May someone from this area shed more light on who is appointed and who is employed. I dont see a problem of family members belonging to a same department this happens in all societies. Unless you tell that these two hold the same portfolio leader and vice.

  40. Ba Easy(45), for now we don’t know what these “relatives” do in the embassy.Let us resume the topic when someone is brave enough to furnish us all with the details!!

  41. Thanks Easy. You’re forgiven. Christ told us to forgive one another otherwise our Father in heaven will not forgive our sins (Matthew 6:14) Although Jimmy wrote something that I agreed with, I don’t know him and I think we are continents away. That is the beauty for debating on this blog. I was supposed to be in bed by now, but decided to check again as my internet is on 24 hours each day of the year. I appreciate your contribution when it is done in the right spirit as in #44 and I respect your view. Mate, it’s bed time for me and so have a lovely time debating every one.

  42. call your best buddy in zambia and ask him to start organising a passport for you.Meanwhile go to your embassy hopefully they aren’t crap and they will advise you.I wonder,do our embassies have those passport forms or is that asking for too much?

  43. Aliyah. As your name in Hebrew means that you’re about to exit Australia, you really need to do what Jimmy says. Iam sure you know that we no longer have any embassy in Australia. I hear that we are under Japan, but Japan has never written to us. So, cantact Japan and London if nothing can’t be done in Lska. Some years back, we had a consulate in Sydney. I am not sure if it is still functioning. I contacted them but they never contacted me back. Ring the Australian Foreign affairs in Canberra and find out if the consulate is still functioning. I think the consulate may not have the power to issue you a new passport.

  44. Thanks 49 and 51. Firstly my best buddy has been told that a go ahead has to be given from Japan or London who have not replied to any of my msgs. As for a consulate here in Australia there is none and I am being refered back to Japan or London. Thanks anyway.

  45. What about the story of new passports? What wil happen to the old ones that we still have, do we wait until they expire then we get the new ones? or is it that everyone has to get the new passport even if the old one is sti valid? Can someone give me some information on this issue!

  46. maybe someone in zambia can tell us about the new passports. However, everytime the govt is broke they start demanding everyone changes their passports, driving licences, bluebooks etc.If your passport expires in 5years time and you’re abroad does it make sense to rush to zambia to change it?

  47. Fizz, don’tworry about changing your passport if it has not yet expired. Mine has some few years before it expires and I can travel on it and come back unless if passport guys demand that I change it while in Zambia.
Aliyah, your situation is similar to that experienced by many of us who have lived in Australia for years. It is sad that a government that is boasting of transforming North Western province because of Lumwana mine has been able to neglect Australia with no embassy or consulate. Japan shop can not serve Australia better. We need our own shop here.
Have a good night mate and hope something works out for you soon.

  48. nkhataboy, you raised some good points. For areas like Kansanshi which I have never been although I lived in Solwezi proper for a while. While GRZ should also build some houses at Kansanshi, it is the mines’ responsibility to build houses there because that is their area. For Solwezi proper, it is GRZ’s responsibility to build houses there although the mine should be encouraged to build houses there especially if they start digging gold under solwezi township. Owners of Lumwana should build more houses and other public facilities at Lumwana. GRZ should also build decent houses there & discourage shanties.
Generally, many mining investors are not interested in building houses. They are interested in getting their profits out of Zambia. This is why foreigners should only own 49% in minining and in other major projects.

  49. Sorry, this posting was meant for another debate. But it found it’s own way here and I can’t explain what happened. Thanks

  50. christy i have not head yet from you …and if at all you are looking for a zambian man …i will find ou one cause i live min maryland rite now …just wondering were you could be living rite now …otherwise give us ya fone number and we will attended to you …

  51. OOOPs.

That depends upon each and every individual’s experience anyway.
We don’t need to jidge by one or 2 Embassies but as a collective stuff.
You might be lucky while anaza guy is unfortunate out there depending on the diplomats in that area.
    Look here gentlemen.
    Just on our side here;
One of the Embassy stuff with a student left all there important duties just to see off a student back to zambia a few days ago.Another student from the same school was blessed with a baby and she was helped to get back home to zambia.
I dont know we can call this good or bad but all i know is that the air fares never came from students themselves.
    OOOPS
    THATS ALL

  52. South Africa is the most dangerous county that I have lived. The level of crime is high. Am a student here and late lats year Octber 27, I bough a car from Japanese car dealers in Durban and juut when I was preparing to go back home, having told my children and my wife, after all that excitement, and after calling my cousing from Zambia, paying for his AIr fees, to come and help in driving to Zambia up to Malawi, where I work, on 27th November a sunday I was about to start packing my stuff in the car on University campus, then my friedn came rushigng to me that he saw my car being driven awat. OOh my God, my car had been stolen. I ended up in the hospital for four days. I went back home empty handed. After almost a year, this week the police phone me telling me that there is a querry pertaing to my lost car. They have found it in Pretoria, am happy for that, though I had forgotten about it and Am planning of ordering another one from Japan when I get back home, though through Tanzania

  53. Watch out Zambians, you are better off whereever you are, in Zambia, despite our/your poverty. I have marked this country with an X in BIG BOLD RED INK . THat was my second ordeal. The same last year I was robbed on my way from the Airport, Richard Bay. Watch out Bane.

  54. #62&63 SA is international well known for its criminal activities. If you are on transit dont leave your lounge you are safe there. Iam worried on how the world cup will be contacted with such a high criminal rate. Many have been robbed I would advise any Zambian travelling thru SA to have a VISA card and 100 Dollar cash that is enough because if anything you buy or cash using your card. Electronic cash has improved nowadways. Dar Saalem is safer for those importing goods.

  55. #63 Watch out Zambians, you are better off whereever you are, in Zambia, despite our/your poverty, brings me to the story of a Zambian dying in a chinese prison on 28.08.2007 who was charged for drug trafficing. Unfortunately the Foreign affairs ministry doesnt not state what was the cause of her death. This is very sad when other nations strive hard to help their citizens Zambians seems to have no interest in helping. This issue should have be brought to the public eye so that a better way out could have been sort out. Dying in prison for case like this is unwarranted for and its a big embsarrassment for the GRZ we need to priotize our nations not raw materials. Other nations fight for citizens no matter how serious the case is.

  56. You can live anywhere bane, the earth is the lords and the fullness thereof.Just be wise when you visit RSA keep to safe areas.

  57. Condolences to the family of the student who died in a chines prison. We Zambians should desist from getting involved in drugs. True other nations do fight for their nationals when they are in trouble overseas, but when it comes to dealing in drugs, I will not blame our embassies for not helping in such cases. Another Zambian is in a Singaporean prison for drug trafficing with her Ghanaian boy friend. Ladies, be careful with Ghanaians or Nigerians. Most of them are crooks who will just use you to achieve their objectives. They will tell you that they are not married and yet they have wives in their countries.

  58. #66 Dont cheat others by painting a wrong picture about living abroad. Not all countries are the same. Recently some Philipians were caught on a cross fire when they were told they are heading for Dubai to get jobs yet they found themselves in Iraq. Its just long when a group of youths endup on a farm and a factory after being promised a future as footballers. It took international organisations to rescue them from slavery and forced labor. SA is well known even for house servants jobs to using dubios means. There is no safer place in the world some countries like Zambia has less criminality compared to some countries like Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, SA, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, DR Congo and them others. Most criminals were guned down during the 1980s in Zambia if you can remember things like Chabuka baisha in Choma, Bye air at Intercity Lusaka, Ngwangwazi on the Copperbelt it was a clean up police did a good job. If you grow up in Lusaka you can bare me witness Lusaka had no wallfences until.

  59. #68 university campuses are notorious for theft. My brother had his car stolen at ridgeway campus in lusaka some years ago.So just be cautious wherever you are.

  60. Zed embassy staff in Abuja Nigeria are courteous and professional. The only problem is that the furniture inthe offices are as old as super Ken.
Please do something. its embarassing to go with a non Zambian friend to the Embassy.

  61. #72 Dangote tell Kachingwe to do something he is the next of kin in Nigeria. He was appointed last week. See him ans show the seats.

  62. I am glad to hear of the good conduct of the Zambian Embassy in Nigeria. This is encouraging to hear of good report by some of our personnel. Keep it up! You are our ambassadors and we are proud of you!

  63. Not all embassies are bad like south africa, i had a problem in nairobi(kenya) i was helped very much by the staff.keep it up zambian embassy staff in nairobi

  64. Hello,

I’m a young Zambian male studying in Guangzhou, China. I would like to meet other Zambians in Guangzhou to socialise with. I would appreciate if someone can tell me if they know any Zambians in Guangzhou. I speak fluent Chinese so if anyone needs an interpreter (Chinese to English or English to Chinese), I’m available for business.

    Thanks.

  65. #76 Ask Lupando Mwape he is there he should have records of Zambians in China. Over your worry with west African friends you are right they can do anything in the name of personal gain. Keep away from then or study their behave and dealings. I talking with experience because I once lend my car a NGA unfortunate he wanted to involve himself in a criminal activities but goodness the police stop him and found out that it was my car and they called. Meanwhile I was in class attending lectures.

  66. Just be careful all of you. You can defend all you want but things have happened in the past and we can learn from them. Enjoy your stay anywhere, everywhere but please do not forget mother Zambia. I wish I came with a Zambian bandana, believe me I would be wearing it everyday and night like Cherise did on Big Brother. Despite everything, let us be proud that we have a home we can go back to should we be chased.

Good day/night from very cold Melbourne

  67. Left Zed after getting married to a european, the Embassy refused to recognise my children as a Zambian citizens, at the time i was very young and naive, so I renounced my Zambian passport to a EU citizenship… to make my residence in europe easier. Now i am older, regret and tired of the racsit western world, my children are ONLY considered as AFRICANS or BLACKS and not as european citizens by the people here, am seriously thinking of investing back home in MOTHER ZAMBIA: Wouldn’t life be a lot easier if we were allowed Dual Citizenships like other countries do? I’m scared for my life and the future of my kids in a country where one can get killed by NEO NAZIS just because of the black skin colour. I believe it’s my birth right to be able to settle in the land where i was born anytime i feel like! Especially when foreigners like nigerians and other westafrican citizens are moving about around the world on Zambian passports.

  68. Easy, there is no need for Muntu to renounce his EU citizenship in order for him to get back his Zambian citizenship. Muntu, like many other old time Zambians in the West were forced to renounce their Zambian citizenship because our GRZ has continued not to adapt with the times. GRZ still holds to its old fashioned thinking regarding dual citizenship. Asians or whites who are Zambians will always have dual citizenship while in Zambia. Yet, our GRZ makes it difficult for us indigenous Zambians not to have dual citizenship when we are overseas. It is time we learned from the Indian govt that has officially recognised the need for it’s nationals to have dual citizenship. There are a lot of benefits for us to have dual citizenship to enable us travel & do business freely in Western countries. No Zambian with a dual citizenship will do harm to mother Zambia unless if he is a brainwashed Muslim fundamentalist. Truly, West Africans have travelled on Zambian passports & yet they’re not Zambians.

  69. #80, 79 The man should not have had to renounce his Zed citizenship in the first place. His children were Zambian by decent and should have been recognised as such. I was born in France. My dad was (MHSRP) Zedian and my mom french. Got educated in Zed up to grade 12 came to France for university education, still lives and works in Europe with a Zed NRC, voters card and passport.

  70. Thank you guys for your reponses, i will like to mention that my kids were born and bred in europe and have only been to Zambia a couple of times for two weeks at a time to vist, none of my kids speaks any Zambian language either. The point is when my kids were born i informed the Zed Embassy about their birth but they refused to accept my kids as Zambians, at that time i still had my Zedian citizenship. When travelling around the world for business i had problems to get visas on the Zedian passport on time! With my present citizenship I’m able to travel all over the world easily, what disturbs me is having to be given a period of time by the immigration of how long i can stay in my own motherland to vist my parents and other relatives.
Like #81 most asians and whites who are zambians have dual citizenships why make things so complicated for indigenous Zambians. #83 does your passport protect you from discrimination in europe? Plz get real!

  71. #84 “#83 does your passport protect you from discrimination in europe? Plz get real!” Did I say my passport protects from anything? Get real? Whatever do you mean! I face prejiduces like every none white living in the West, and it’s not because of my passport alone but my skin colour as well. I work and live here but gat serious interests in Zed and go there every year. Infact, I have permanent residence there. That’s why I was able to register as a voter. Yeah getting work permits or contracts is hell, but usually works out. Renouncing my Zed citizenship would bring unique problems that might cost me 50% of my income. Take time to understand my #83 comment. My point is that those Zed authorities that refused to recognise your children were unjust. Like me, your children were Zedian by descent and should have been recognised as such! Your comment #84 tells me your renounciation of your Zed roots had nothing to do with your children but economics, which is alright as well!

  72. I have just come to Australia and thinking about settling for a while but worry for my children every day. Munthu brings a good insight to the problems we face as blacks in these countries we choose to call our home. I pose the question, is it worth it or not? I feel like dropping everything and running off back home, I dread to see my kids without respect and all the culture that our Zedian children are brought up with. Someone tell me please>>>>>>> Take time to answer please I don’t need your harsh sentiments as I am serious. Love you all

  73. muntu, I’m ignorant of these issues. Is it possible to have two passports one european and the other zambian? When my kid was born I just put him in my zambian passport I’m now trying to get his own when I go to zed nxt week.Do you think they will refuse since he has a foreign birth certificate. This is what promotes corruption becoz if they do refuse I’ll just go to my sister whose a nurse and get a zambian birth certificate!
Aliyah, my son feels so left out being the only dark skinned kid at school. How do you deal with that?

  74. It #86 Aliyah, what I can advise you is to think twice of the consquences that made you leave Zed. I regrett so much for leaving my country for green pastures but one note Iam happy I obtained education which I would have got in ZED. Now Iam planing to settle in ZED my mother country. I feel Iam much happier there. My child as for now I leave it open she can hang around for while in the whitesman land. I have come to believe that not all what glitters is Gold, sometimes silver is far much pleasure metal. I miss the developments going on home. The culture in the west is messed up. My only comfort is deviation, somethings cannot be changed by humans so they come to pass. Just think of sex discrimination can we justify it in our society I dont think so. A man can not have sex with a fellow man unless they pysco sick. How can a child at 7 tell off his parents.Unbelievable. I never been to Downunder but I feel its the same in all western states

  75. #86 Aliyah, I’m not an expert, but your concerns are well founded. You and your children will not become truly accepted in the western world and shall experience prejudices. This is a sad fact. These people only respect a mega rich or overly accomplished black person. However, you may be in the West now so as to provide a good life for your family. You may not be able to do so back in Zed. Focus on that. Don’t let the white folks win in telling you and your children they are only good for sports and music, align them to such a route at school. Try as much as possible to maintain the link with Zed. Maintain the culture. It’s your job to have it passed on to your offspring. Take a wiff from the indians or the moslems. They maintain their culture and links with their motherland no matter where they are. Home is always better.

  76. #87 Cece, Zambian law does not allow dual citizenship. People who have it, like most of the Asians living in Zed do it presumably without immigration knowing. You will not have problems if the dad to your kid is Zambian and you gat proof of that. But if he is not, and assuming your kid is 16 or over but under 21, your kid shall have to fill a form renouncing his dad’s country of residence in preference to Zed. There shall be some form of consent from the dad or the mom agreeing with the child’s renounciation. This shall be among the documents you tender in, that is, birth certificate, affidavit and the passport application form itself. If 21 or above, the child just renounces his dad’s country of origin and settles for Zed, tendering the documents of application with this renounciation. Zambian law is as straight forward as this, but you will meet an officer who will interpret it differently and make it difficult so as to make you pay them for doing you a “favour”. My dad is from Zim.

  77. #88 “a man cannot have sex with another man unless he is physco” In Zed Homosexuality is a tabu subject, there are many homosexual Z men just as many Z lesbian women, some years back one would find the big hotels in the capital and other big cities occupied by whites with Zed men or rather homos loitering the lobbys, hotel bars and hoping in and out of the elevators after having spent “short times” with western hotel guests in their rooms. Z women were not allowed entrance in bars with friends unless accompanied by men, white women would be greeted with nod and a polite G’d day/evening madam, while the Z women would be thrown out rudely or whisked off roughly by hotel security to “deal with them”. Many of these men had sexual encounters with other men for money and had girlfriends or wives at home to hide their homosexuality from the public people. Today these guys are six feet under and the new generation is in full force. Homosexuality is not a sickness, same as being lefthanded.

  78. 91# lelo

Homosexuality is a sickness, Easy is right on that one.

Being lefthanded is not a sickness. There is no way you can compare being lefhanded with homosexuality!

With your detailed knowledge of homos in zed I would not be too suprised if you turned out to be homo yourself.

  79. I’ts Very typical for many to turn a blind eye on gay’s in third world countrys, three weeks ago i came across a young homo (18yrs old) in lusaka who does not even know he is gays, he spoke like a woman his nails were painted lips glossed, actions speaks louder than words!GO TO LONGACRES there is a pick up place where whites meets Z gays. Capetown SA. is where you will find most gays walking hand in hand, guess what!? 50% are black africans .

  80. #94
Most black males probably become homoz bcoz of poverty and not bcoz they were born gay and probably most are tempted by white males again bcoz of poverty. It is very disappointing to see our people turning to such sick activities bcoz of poverty. Look at big brother Africa, I was sad to see our women displaying their nude bodies in the name of winning some damm competition. The moral degradation of our society is all to do with poverty and misplaced priorities. Big brother and other similar immoral shows should be banned from Africa.

  81. Alliyah, the land down under is the same as any Western nation as far as childrens behaviour is concerned. Just be firm with them although you will not be happy with some of the things they will be taught. Don’t belt them with a stick if they are naughty as that might land you in prison. I slapped mine when they were young though. We are developing our Zambian community & this will help children to behave although it is not a guarantee. Some Zambian kids are very naughty while some others are not. As for racism, it is rare for black kids to experience racism in schools here. Racism is there in other public places like work, but it is burried & it is not like in America or RSA. Not all Zambians in the West will live in the West for ever. Once you pass 60 yrs, you need to start to think of going back to Zambia. But start to invest in Zambia now. Unfortunately most Zambians just drink & drink & they will be like the song ‘A Phiri anabwera…’ (Phri coming from the West with nothing)

  82. Disappointed Zedian(95), banning things is like putting your head in the sand….it is no solution. In certain Nordic countries marijuana is legal and yet they consume less than in countries where it is banned !!!It’s a catch 22 situation.
We should be proud of our culture and just never legalise certain things. We should not be swayed by living in a global village and in being politically correct, embrace certain practises.Homosexuality and same sex marriages are illegal in Zambia and let us keep it that way.It is our way of life and we should be respected for it.If one wants to be “gay”…let them migrate to where it is accepted.

  83. The debate on dual citizenship is indeed interesting. There are many of us who would like the convenience of having an EU passport, for example for ease of travel, but would be reluctant to give up Zambian citizenship. I wrote to State House about this as an interested citizen but I’ve had no response. Granted, the law banning dual nationality was deemed necessary during the liberation wars of southern Africa, but times have changed now and a review of this law is necessary. A true Zambian will always remain Zambian no matter where they live or what country’s nationality they adopt. Another thought: if repealing the law is not an option would it be possible to grant right of permanent residence to those who would be left no alternative but to give up their Zambian passports? There are many of us who may who would like to work or settle back home without having the need for a work permit which would otherwise be the case if one were not on a residence permit. Please discuss.

  84. Muntu #79 and 84
You are not alone in this boat, there are many out there. I personally spoke to the CIO concerning the same. Can you email me your address or possibly your phone number.I will call you. i might be of help, if you wish.
    my email: [email protected]

  85. #88,#89 and #96 thank you very much for what I consider highly valuable responses you have given me, I appreciate it and have taken everything seriously. I miss Chalala Chilenje where I have a house and Ku Kabwe where I grew up and would definitely love to go there not very long from now. Thank you guys for your advice.

    Love you all

    Good evening all and

  86. Musonda, I like your spirit to help other Zambians who are grappling with the issue of dual citizenship. Countries like China which are growing have made it easy for their nationals to have dual citizenship for easy travel & business purposes. China & India are developing fast because they hvae many nationals oversease who are involved in business and are able to travel the world on their EU or American passports making business deals which are benefiting China. for instance a Zmbian with an Australian citizenship can travel to many Western countries & do his or her business than if he or she only had a Zambian passport. Ou friends the Nigerians though corrupt can be found in almost any nation in the world with with dual citizenship & a good number of them have their tutemba or pastoring big Churches. In UK, there are many churches pastored by Nigerians. Our friends from West Africa are able to support one another whether in Church or business. Let’s learn some good points from them.

  87. The Zambian government should allow dual citizenship because us bena Luapula would also like to have Katangese passports, ku buluba eko twa fumine!

  88. I just discovered this site accidentally as i was checking cheaper ways of calling home. I have also read so much interesting articles on this site ranging from behaviour of Embassies abroad, dual citizenship to homo sexuality.
well I have had a different experience with the embassy in South africa where I live, they have been helpful on the two occasions I have been there. The Embassy in Ethiopia too,Am currently on assignment in Netherlands and intend to visit the Embassy in Belgium.i’lb intoch

  89. As regarding dual citizenship, even here in Netherlands it is not allowed, fortumately it is allowed in South Africa, my son was born in South Africa, so I have registered him at the Zambian Embassy and he is Zambian, despite having S.A’s birth certificate.he will choose what he wants to be when he grows up, he can easily become South African If thats what he’l want.
I dn’t necesarily oppose Zambia’s stance on dual citizenship.u can only b faithful 2 one country, suppose there is a war between?

  90. Well its me again,as regards homo sexuality it is a complicated topic, ofcourse it can’t even be discussed openly in Zed.personally i don’t favour it but it should be handed delicately considering the studies I came across in both ‘Naturally’ gay men and animals!
today i told my work mate how lucky her mr ‘right’ wil b to have her, then she corrected me saying “or a miss right” & i wondered….a miss right for HER!?
wel Iam in a peacebuilding organisation that shud be inclusive, its food 4 thot

  91. Bwembya, Especially where you are you must be very careful lest you offend someone. When I arrived Downunder, my first clients were lesbians and believe me it was hard. I told myself Aliyah, you must stop thinking home (Zambia) you are in a new environment where such things are openly acceptable. Good luck all as you handle and ecounter ‘strange’ things.

Always good to speak to you my countrymen/women

  92. I am glad to hear that some Embassies are doing a great job. Unfortunately the Embassy in Belgium is a let down. The standards are appalling. We need dedicated and motivated people to liven up this embassy. To be quite honest, I have never seen such an inefficient embassy.

  93. i have travelled to germany, italy, spain, ireland, france and south africa and mozambique and swaziland and kenya and angola and russia and greece over the last 20 years and only dealt with the zambia embassy twice in pretoria and in london.once in Bonn i went to register my details which was a big mistake because i never heard anything from them!in fairness i once lost my passport in jo’burg and i had to travel to the UK and they issued me with a travel document!is getting a passport still slow?

  94. Dear Sir,
I wish very much t travwel Zambia and how to get visa?
I am an Indian and looking for Visa to visit business trip in Zambia.
What are the best hotel to stay in for safety and at least reasonable charges.
Please let me know on my Mail ID [email protected] and oblige.

  95. My name is Manish Solanki,

I need more information about accomodation in Lusaka (safe and reasonable)

If possible please let me know on this mail ID [email protected]

Thanks a lotwith lot of regards.

    Manish Solanki.

  96. our embassies are the most useless in the world.we really don’t have qualified people to present us abroad. It’s like intemba.they can’t help u anything.Very frustrating such tht u can’t even like talking about it.Nowonder we’re not famours because of putting who unqualified people to represent us.shame on u govt !Bamambala muletusebanya.

  97. Interesting indeed.Zambia is still backwards in doing thing.
It seems they don’t offer peoper advise to their citizens. All they think is working in an abroad is just
sitting down and relaxing. To them it’s them is like travel the world before you die and forget about others

  98. Wow, marvelous blog format! How long have you ever been blogging for? you make blogging glance easy. The entire look of your web site is magnificent, as well as the content!

  99. I believe this is among the most significant info for me. And i am glad reading your article. However should commentary on few normal issues, The site style is perfect, the articles is in point of fact excellent : D. Excellent task, cheers
