Finance Minister, Alexander Chikwanda, says Luanshya district is poised for economic recovery once
the dewatering of shaft 28 Baluba underground mine was completed.

Mr Chikwanda said that underground mining activities were an expensive but profitable undertaking capable of reviving the economy.

He was speaking in Luanshya today when he paid a courtesy call to the district administrative office this morning.

He noted that though underground mining had severe cost implications, operationalising shaft 28 once dewatered, would positively contribute to economic development.

The Finance Minister however was pleased that the Mulyasha Open Pit Mine was fully functional.

And Acting Luanshya District Commissioner, Kasemuka Mwalo, is hopeful that production in the mines would increase with the stabilising of copper prices on the international market coupled with government’s intervention of increasing electricity supply to the mines.

Mr Chikwanda, who is Patriotic Front member of the central committee, was in the district to meet party nominated candidates among other party functionaries in the district.

    • This man is a wonder. I couldn’t believe my ears when he started praising the PF campaign Chairman(Mr. Mukupa) for his knowledge in witchcraft when the PF had a rally at Levy Mwanawasa stadium.

    • Total incompetence by PF. Baluba is closed not because of water but because it has reached its end of life – there are no economical reserves, and very high cost to mine the remaining ore. Baluba Mine will never open again. Those jobs are lost forever. That’s why Chikwanda could not even bother talking to the Chinese mine owners. There’s no positive spin to put about Luanshya. It’s a dying town. Just ask Chimbwili.

  1. This old fossil should keep his mouth shut until he knows what he is talking about.

Can anyone take him seriously on economics when he has managed to BANKRUPT ZAMBIA TWICE?

Dinosaurs belong in museums, not being appointed by vision less Lungu to Parliament!

Reviving the economy? Was it not this self same Chikwanda and his PF that destroyed it in the first place?

And we should believe he can fix it?

    Ubufi sana!

  2. We should have this Tyranosaurus Rex (T-rex) flogged at Disaster stadium on 13/08/2016 for bankrupting the country.

  3. Evidence that Edgar Chakolwa Hangover Kaloba Wrungu is clueless, visionless, useless, hopeless, brainless, dullness, directionless, needless, heartless, spinless and a drunkard why the hell should this iron age man be a finance minister.

  4. Well said Hon Chikwanda,
There are some stopes at 28 shaft with grades as high as 2.25% Cu.
Once a conveyor belt is installed to transport the ore from the shaft to the plant…
…Or better still, the ore milled at the shaft and the slurry pumped to the plant for processing, Luanshya will become a world-class copper mine.
THIS FACT ALONE IS GIVING PF A RESOUNDING VICTORY!!

    • Keep dreaming! There’s nothing that will ever be world class about Baluba Mine. Not even the Chinese will throw good money into a dead end mine. They will just keep the profitable Muliashi open pit operations going while Baluba is closed forever.

  5. See people – Obama is leaving after 8 good years of being POTUS. He is going to be 55 years old. Cameron is still a young man and he has decided he is not running for Prime Minister of the UK again. Kabila is a very young man who thinks that the shambles of the DRC can be extended by violating the constitution of his country. Do you see how being use.less has NOTHING to do with AGE??? It has everything to do with USE.LESS governance systems. Africans ALWAYS seem to think the laws they have enacted become inadequate on a whim – The Westerners know it has to take a lot of hard work to even try to find an inadequacy.

  6. Lets do whatever is possible to provide jobs for the people of Luanshya. I wonder what the gains are for those who are always negative and whose only word power is insults and calling senior statesmen by pronouns. SHAME.
