Government to electrify all chiefs’ palaces

Share

Government has made significant progress in electrifying chiefs palaces in the country.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Water Development, Peter Mumba says many palaces in the country have since been electrified with either solar power or conventional electricity from the national grid.

Mr. Mumba told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that palaces which are not on the national grid have been provided with solar power while those on the national grid have been electrified under the auspices of Rural Electrification Authority.

He has however urged the chiefs in the country whose palaces have not been electrified to be patient as government is doing everything possible to electrify all chiefs’ palaces in the country.

Mr. Mumba said the electrification of chief palaces and the rural electrification project that government is implementing are aimed at taking development to all parts of the country.

He said the move will open up the rural areas but added that it has however been hampered by inadequate resources.

Mr. Mumba further said government has set other priorities which include electrification of clinics and schools.

He said some chiefs in the country have opted to electrify need areas such as clinics, hospitals and schools before they can have their palaces electrified.

  1. Good, but also lower your tarrifs to make electricity affordable to rural dwellers. As for chiefs, expect more succession disputes.

  2. #2 pliz let them also enjoy life no kutambakofye ka TV its important gone are the days when pipo used to cook on fire wood..

  3. They can have electricity but the chiefs should cover their own bills. My tax already has enough abusers.

  4. Its a good thing to learn that the governement is going to electrify the chiefs palaces; i think electricity is now a necessity for everyone. Why do we want our fellow human beings in a country to still live like in the stoneage period? We are busy beautifying the cities and yet no one bothers to pay attention to the struggling villagers or even develop the villages from the state they are in. Until we develop those areas and continue to educate them , the rural urban migration will not stop. Lets develop the whole country and not part of the country. Tax is meant for development and i will be very proud if my tax is put to good use by the people who need it. I really feel for the people who live in the rural areas and are forgotten. Their MPS are voted in move to town, get drunk with tea

  5. in parliament, then forget about the people who voted for them and instead start fighting for themselves. This is a lot of BS.. stop using the villagers for your votes. Help develop them. As long as those places are not developed and you build 10 Manda Hills in the city, you still have not done much. So electrify the chiefs homes and their areas. They contribute to the economy in a way through the small scale farming and yet not recognised. My hear t goes out to them and if i happen to donate anything, i would rather this time take my donations to the villages

  6. Ma Chiefs are tired of adjusting? Koloboyi days are soon over.
Now MMD will have them 100% for the 2011 votes.

  7. Canucks, I agree with you on the issue of rural development. The only government that took rural development with a hint of seriousness was the Kaunda Administration. Our development as a country will crucially depend on how we harness the vast resources in the rural areas. This is the key to economic diversification. However, I do believe that this development has to be done in a sustainable manner. Thus once infrastructure (e.g. road ans bridges) has been put in place by Boma, things like electricity bills for chiefs should be covered by the earning from these areas and not my tax which would have already build the infrastructure.

  8. The chiefs are just being bribed , Government should electrify all rural areas not just chiefs palaces. Besides these chiefs need to keep traditions and stay in the dark.

  9. Its not neccesary. wasting tax payers money. How many chiefs are we talking about? Bengi sana. Rural electrification is what we should be talking about. Not ifyo mulevoka, awee!!

  10. It appears we do nat have priority when allocating the little resources that are available. Electrification of Chief’s places is not urgent but schools and clinics are as they are used by the masses. Last year chiefs were given vehilces and others opted for fancy or luxury SUVs because there were no guidelines. Others right now have failed to maintain them. The chiefs should not be seen to swimming in luxury at the expense development for all citizens PS Mumba get your figures correct. Go round the country and see for yourself how some of vehilces are being misused by some chiefs. Electrification whether Solar or Hydro should start with social infrastructure. By the way who will be paying for their bills as GRZ is failing to pay departmental bills to Zesco. Or its gifts for votes in 2011?
