Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa’s quest to become the Mayor of the city of Lusaka has ended in defeat at the hands of Patriotic Front(PF) candiate Wilson Kalumba.

PF’s Wilson Kalumba has been declared Mayor of Lusaka after he polled 270 161 votes in the August 11, general election.

The former first lady standing on the United Party for National Development (UPND) came second with 150 807 votes.

Lusaka Returning officer Alex Mwansa declared Mr Kalumba as Lusaka Mayor at around 09;00 hours.

And Mr Kalumba has pledged to ensure smooth operations at the local authority. He said he will not relent in developing Lusaka and the local authority.

Going into this election, the former first lady was confident of victory for both her candidancy and her party UPND when he spoke to tyhe Post newspaper last week.

“You don’t need a magician or a prophet to tell you that PF has lost this election; all odds are against PF and come Thursday, PF will be history,” Maureen said.

“And the other thing PF should know is that no Zambian will stand in a polling booth on an empty stomach and cast a vote for them, unless something is wrong. People don’t have food in their homes; life has become extremely expensive and you expect them to come and vote for you on an empty stomach after you created that hunger for them? It doesn’t work like that.”

The former First Lady urged voters to give her chance to transform Lusaka city by voting for her in the mayoral elections.

“Everywhere you look around in Lusaka, there is garbage and this should change starting this week when we form government. There is no way our beautiful city can be floating on garbage,” Maureen said.

“The levels of indiscriminate disposal of garbage in Lusaka city are alarming. When you are on the streets of Lusaka, you look west you see garbage, you look east you see garbage, you look north, it’s garbage, you look south it’s garbage. This is unacceptable. Would you like it if your house was filled with garbage and there is bad odour all around? The answer is no. We need to maintain our hygiene and stay healthy and fit. It is our duty to keep our city clean not only for us, but also for the people visiting our city and also for the future generations.”

She promised to come up with an efficient garbage collection system that would make the city clean.

“When you vote us into office for mayor, we shall ensure that uncollected garbage and indiscriminate disposal of waste becomes a thing of the past. We will ensure that Lusaka has an efficient garbage collection system and we shall bring to book anyone found throwing garbage indiscriminately. We shall also carry out a sensitisation programme on the dangers of indiscriminate disposal of garbage. We want to see a Lusaka where households will throw garbage in dustbins and not on the road,” said Maureen.

“Lusaka city is dirty and it is dirty everywhere. I know many of us are yearning to live in a clean city, free of uncollected garbage and indiscriminate disposal of waste. So let us work together and to achieve this, on August 11, vote us into the office for mayor, we promise you to clean the city of Lusaka.”

  1. Leave the former first lady alone! She a victim of Edgar also, she is still waiting for her house and entitlements! RB jumped the line

    • No one is holding her. This is just a general report and it is a fair report. In any case, Maureen sought public office making her a public property now and subject to public scrutiny. She made this choice on her own will. If you had any other thoughts, you should have advised her not to go public in order to protect her integrity. If you have any one to blame it is Maureen herself. The citizens of Lusaka have made a choice and rejected Maureen!! All we can do is respect the choice of the majority. This is democracy!!!

    • We have taught the so called “Intellectuals” and “Rich kids” a lesson that we the Kaponyas and Poor kids are in numbers and we don’t need their intelligent and rich leaders to lead us.. We prefer a person with a humble background to lead us.Kateka ni Lungu.. Go hug a ZESCO transformer if you are too touched.. want a fellow poor man.. Kaili we are used to suffering according to them.. So what is their problem if we continue to suffer? Did we die from last year? We shall survive even if we eat grass and they eat Nshima with beef and chicken as their vegetable.. Am just shocked with the kind of mediocrity exhibited byThe Rich Kids and Intellectuals.. They want to insult us and feel pity for us as if we have asked for their sympathy.. They should take a sit or a chill pill!

    • Ubucende bubi … ati we need to recount in Lusaka because my girl friend lost and says so. HH is laughable!!! So, if this guy became president, Maureen would have driven policy for the entire country from that motel room in the capital.

Lesa ala alitutemwa fwe bena Zambia.

    • @B R Mumba, Sr You have almost become a splitting image a kaponya of Senior Citizen calibre! What happened? Living abroad makes people lackey sure!

    • The government doesn’t make Lusaka dirty, it is the residents who indiscriminately dispose of rubbish because they somehow expect it to dissolve into thin air!

  2. Such a shame – the position of Executive Mayor should have gone to UPND or to an Independent, this would have been beneficial for Lusaka residents. Impartiality and no strongholds in markets and trading areas. Proud of you Mrs. Mwanawasa, try again next time.

    • UPND is now history! There is a party called PAC by a young and serious leader called Banda who by many will be the next Government in 2026. Forget Kachema, he has been rejected loud and clear and for the fifth time, shhh.

  3. “You don’t need a magician or a prophet to tell you that PF has lost this election; all odds are against PF and come Thursday, PF will be history,” Maureen said. Kwena ba Maureen muli chinangwa. Ifyo mwalushile

    • I really wonder how this woman is feeling now. I am her intestinal discharge is at it’s peak now! Cruel woman!

  4. THE UPND LEADERS SHOULD ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THEIR HOUSE CALLED TRIBALISM.
HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT IN PF STRONGHOLDS HH GOT SUBSTANTIAL VOTES BUT IN UPND STRONGHOLDS ECL ONLY GOT PALTRY VOTES BUT WITH A GOVERNMENT THAT HAS ACTUALLY DELIVERED SOME DEVELOPMENT.
AS LONG AS UPND IS LED BY SOMEBODY WHOSE QUALIFICATION TO LEAD IT IS HIS TRIBE THEN IT IS NOT A NATIONAL PARTY AND DOES NOT DESERVE TO RULE ZAMBIA. GOD WILL ENSURE THAT.

    • @Armchair critic

      Luapula Province
      LUNGU, Edgar C 205,770
      HICHILEMA, Hakainde 35,929

With CHISESHI/Chiseshi Pri Sch Polling Station
      LUNGU, Edgar C 117 votes
      HICHILEMA, Hakainde 1 vote

    • I see that the word STRONGHOLD is being used interchangeably with TRIBALISM in this election. May be HH did his homework in the PF STRONGHOLDS because it is evident that numbers are increasing while, PFs have actually dwindled in UPND STRONGHOLDS or “TRIBALISMS.”

    • It is you people/bloggers and cadres confusing things, if people in your stronghold are voting for the opposition then there is a problem with yourself. You are not doing enough and they are rebelling against you. The results have got nothing to do with tribalism and it is a pity that even the now president Lungu is referring to it. Let EL and PF convince those in UPND strongholds that they are delivering and they will get the votes period. Stop this idiocy of tribalism it is simply dividing the country more!

    • SIMUTWE MWEBATONGA MWALI ITEMWISHA TEBUFI UBU. No what your justifications are its plain to see the fact on the ground through the voting paterns PERIOD.

    • So abashaitemwa nibanani mukwai twebeniko kaili. Nibani abaipata? We are simply exaggerating thing with this issue of tribalism, you also have to consider what comments were made by some senior PF members prior to the elections. By the way one my parents are Bemba and Tonga!

  5. Well tried lady and unlike Mulenga Sata, you have stuck with one party. Shame on Dr Guy Scott for giving false promises to Upnd.

  7. Like VJ said there are no permanent enemies in politics. Remember what Maureen’s husband LPM described UPND as buttocks…..and 25 years later she is standing on the UPND party ticket. There are no morals in politics. Dora Siliya and Sata’s PF and the things she said about Sata. The list is endless.

  8. @lyton Limfu
If you divide Luapula figure you will find that HH’s number can go into 205770/35929=5 times while dudumwenzi if had divided it 30 810/252 = 122 times, are still saying that is fair if compared to Luapula?

    • We have a classic case of the minority tribes (Bemba/Ngoni-Chewa) in Zambia seeking hegemony over the majority tribes.

The support of UPND is wider in geographic representation than the PF. The tribal voting in Luapula and its cohort is to perpetuate Bemba hegemony. The fact remains that the Bemba and their allies are the minority in Zambia. And I am not speaking of the Congo.

    • Go to hell with your primitive thinking. What criteria are you using? is it another fake PVT? You are still living in stone age times. Ir is very easy to identify people like you in civilised cities just how you behave and carry yourselves. Even your useless Mushipe, she behave like an illiterate in public. That was a disgrace not only to you guys but to the entire legal fraternity both locally and internationally.

The rest of Zambia behave well apart from your guys. So who is a minority? It is your tribe. It needs to behave like we are in 2016. Malabishi!!!!

  9. She joined a losing team. She should have tried to stand in Southern province. HH will never ever be president of Zambia. He is going to lose in 2021.God will not allow UPND to Zambia. How many elections has HH lost? He should consider retiring. Unprincipled politicians joined UPND. Rejected politicians from PF and MMD. I am sure they will make up stories to rejoin PF.They can’t wait for 5 years to come and lose again.Too bad for them.

  10. Wilson my friend I’ve no doubt in your competence & capabilities. I also know that you’ve a vision for Lusaka but don’t just launch in. Take a retreat & consult widely both with grass roots & your friends to come up with a master plan for achieving your vision. Lusaka must become the most desirable city to live in Africa. We need organised mass transport system, green areas, parks & garden city concept, walkways & cycle tracks, social events spearheaded by council to bring residents together, upgrading of compounds, sanitation, security including CCTV, etc. I know you have it in you to make a big positive difference as our city father. God Bless You

  11. ZAMBIA WILL ONLY DEVELOP WHEN WE THE CITIZENS BEGIN LOOKING AT THE MERIT SIDE OF LIFE THAN POLITICAL INCLINATION. ON MERIT, MAUREEN WAS BETTER FOR THE JOB. HOW MANY OF THE PEOPLE THAT VOTED FOR THE PF CANDIDATE KNOW HIM? WHO IS HE, WHAT HAS HE DONE FOR ZAMBIA? LETS BEGIN TO APPRECIATE PEOPLE WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS NATION WITHOUT PREJUDICE. WE VOTED FOR SATA ALMOST IN EVERY CORNER OF THIS COUNTRY COZ OF WHAT THE MAN HAD DONE. WE STILL ENJOY HIS FRUITS TO DATE AND EVEN PEOPLE WHO DONT DESERVE TO RIDE ON HIS GLORY ARE RIDING ON. HATRED & BITTERNESS IS A POISON THAT WILL CHOCK US TO DEATH IF WE DON’T CHANGE.

    • @Jay, it may come as surprise to you but Wilson is more qualified & perhaps more exposed than the former 1st lady & just because you don’t know him doesn’t make him incompetent. It is easy, just go to his website on google. He has supplied as much information about him to the public. What do you think the former 1st lady has to be more deserving than him?

  12. if they respected maureen they should have made have made stand in livingstone. She is a very good lady . I know Edgar will not leave her out..

  13. Dear Zambians,
These hash trible remarks we are making are not good, not funny but very wicked. To end this lets just say southern, western and north western is UPND strong hold and not because of tribe. HH has sold himself well that side. So PF should not think that poeple need roads, development or food. Let them do better homwork. campigning to zambians saying that we have empty stomach we don’t eat, we are starving its like an insult.. Zambians are well feed people. forget about reports from international bodies. I leave in Zambia… Zambians can eat!!!3 to 4 meals. Begin to improve our society with technolgy. I wish a can explain more..

  14. Let it be known by all that UPND has the strongest support amongst Zambians.

Zambia comprises 72 ethnic groups with about 90% of the population belonging to the Nine major ethnolinguistic groups: the Nyanja-Chewa; Bemba; Tonga; Tumbuka; Lunda; Luvale; Kaonde; Nkoya; and Lozi. These nine major tribes are split politically as follows:

PF support bases is from the Nyanja-Chewa; Bemba; Tumbuka. (Three tribal groups)
UPND base lies with the Tonga; Lunda; Luvale; Kaonde; Nkoya; and Lozi. (Six tribal groups)

UPND will whack PF anyday, anytime, anywhere IF the election is free and fair. The people in Lusaka

    • Chibok Girls, Do not bring other tribes into your tribal vibes. This scenario currently prevailing is a creation of a party called UPND after the death of its leader Mazoka. There has never been anything like this before your UPND declared that only a Tonga can lead its party. UPND and HH created this in the minds of the Tongas that is why the riots happened only in Southern province and non in Western and Norther Western and other areas in Central Province where HH and UPND have support. Very soon these other areas outside Southern province will know that they are just being used by the selfish agenda of HH.

Such political alignments are normal in any country but what is wrong is declaring that that only a certain tribe can rule. Western and Norther western were supporting UPND and…

    • @Asigai

It is your surreptitious attempt as Bembas to ride rough shod over the greater Barotseland that has now been debunked. RB brutalized us. MC Sata mocked us. FTJ brought denkete to SP. All these past rulers are from one region; your region.

Your attempt to isolate the Tongas from Barotseland has lamentably failed. Your say Bemba is a big tribe. Rubbish. The battle is between the minority (Bemba/Ngoni-Chewa) and the rest of Zambian is greater Barotseland.

And nothing will change. Now we have awoken. Touch Luvale, you touch Lozi, Tonga, Mbunda, Chokwe, Kwangwa. Touch Tonga, you touch Luvale, Kaonde. One for all, All for One Barotseland.

  15. UPND- A Tonga Party can not win in LUSAKA Where people are very civilized and M.Mwanawasa should stop politics for her to restore dignity otherwise she will be a fool forever-HH’s side chick (UBUWULE WE CHIKULU)

  16. I am still saying that you have no right to be a spokesperson for these other tribes. They have the ability to speak for themselves. You have just shown yourselves that you were doing all this on tribal grounds. I am not against any tribal relationship here, it is norm in Zambia and a good thing, but you Tongas have abused it to sponsor your tribal candidate and consequently implicate innocent tribes.

Why is it only you Tongas complaining here? Why are the Luvales, Lozis, etc not insulting and beating up people like yourselves in Southern Province? You think we are all blind and cannot see who you really are in this election. You have been exposed both at home and abroad as a tribal party. You have no defence on this issue. the best is to admit it. Malabishi!!!!

  17. Maureen Mwanawasa is an empty tin who makes a lot of promiscuous noise. People have not forgotten how you were insulting them when you were the first lady. Its a pity and laughable that a person of her calibre can loos to a simple Guy like Wilson kalumba. UBUCHENDE TABWAWAMA BA MAMA MWANAWASA. SHAME

  18. Jay jay the litter you see in our cities are created by you the residents. I had a chance to spend five weeks in an American city and never saw a single person throwing rubbish anyhow. In Zambia you get insulted if try to advise someone throwing things from a moving vehicle. In colonial days you could lose your house if you don’t make the surroundings in good order. There were even awards for the best kept house.

  19. #16 Keep on dreaming! @Je Je are you still watching this space? I am glad you are like the ostrich! Scott, Kilometer Sampa, Mulenga, Maureen, Scot’s wife GBM all thought Zambians were stoolpid! They were taught a lesson! You will never learn until you come to the glimpse that U-5 can’t win an election in Zambia! He is too Tangash just like his voters!
