WBC Bantamweight Champion Catherine Phiri with the title challenger south African boxer Gibisile Tsabala during the weigh in at Chicago Restaurant at Manda Hill in LusakaCatherine Phiri’s camp has admitted opponent Gabisile Tshabalala was a disappointment.

Saturday’s nights WBC bantamweight title fight ended in an anti-climax fashion at Government Complex in Lusaka when the South African threw in the towel barely two minutes into the first round after failing to respond to a flurry from Catherine.

Both Catherine and her manager Chris Malunga said Tshabalala failed to live up to her reputation as South Africa’s best boxer in her class.

Tshabalala is the WBF super bamtamweight title holder.

“I spent three months training for this fight. I am disappointed with Tshabalala,” Catherine said.

“If this is how she fights, let her switch to another career.”

Malunga too slammed what turned out to be a farce.

“We were expecting an entertaining fight and not this. I am disappointed,” Malunga said.

Tshabalala, who was fighting her first contest outside her homeland, now drops to two defeats, nine wins and a draw.

Catherine is now on 12 wins and one loss after her successful first defence of her WBC title.

  1. Well done Catherine. Learn something from your opponent. If you cant stand it throw in the towel before you die in the ring. Zambians are notorious for not accepting defeat. They d rather you die in the ring than throw in the towel.

  2. Am glad my boy has scooped third place even after those engine penalties and starting last on 21 in formula one.

    • I dont understand his tyre choice though because he had a real chance of beating Red Bull’s Riciardo if they didnt bring him in for the medium compound towards the end of the race.Anyway Monza next week will be exciting since there wont be any grid penalties.
