Fire has swept through Maramba culture village in Livingstone burning the restaurant, kitchen, toilets and outside performing stage.

The property that belongs to the Ministry of Tourism and Arts was built at a cost of about 3.5 Million Kwacha and was in July leased to Nyungu Muumi Cultural Nest a restaurant belonging to the Wife to senior Chief Mukuni of Kazungula District.

And Nyungu Muumi Cultural Nest Marketing manager Mary Fulilwa says the fire started from the back of the kitchen and not inside the kitchen.

Ms. Fulilwa says one of the drummers from the Zambia National Dance troupe asked for fire from the kitchen to warm his drums but that he allegedly did not put out the fire when he was done.

Ms. Fulilwa says everything that was in the kitchen and at the bar including laptops, a Television set and phones have all burnt to ashes.

And an eye witness Martin Musokotwane says he was at maramba culture to have lunch when the fire started.

Dr. Musokotwane says he just heard shouts from the back and then a lady appeared from the kitchen shouting that there was fire in the kitchen.

Southern province Cultural Officer James Zimba declined to comment saying he had not yet established from those were at the scene when the fire started.

By 16:30 the Livingstone fire brigade was still struggling to put out the fire.

  2. Zambia should urgently improve its fire emergency services in order to ameliorate such disasters. Even the Mwela Rocks Cultural village was gutted last year.

  3. COUNCILS ARE A LET DOWN. TRADERS PAY FOR FIRE SERVICES, WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? IN CHINGOLA THE COUNCIL CANT PUT OFF A FIRE. HOW SAD. LETS HAVE LEADERSHIP AND ACCOUNTABILITY PLEASE.
