campaign to educate school going children on the dangers of early alcohol intake and other bad vices.
LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager, Habenzu Mulunda, said the council has started going to learning institutions to provide pupils with information on dangers of alcohol abuse with a view to helping stop the vice.
Mr Mulunda said in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today that the council is, among other things, giving motivational talks to pupils aimed at helping stop alcohol abuse and concentrate on school.
He said the move is in line with President Rupiah Banda’s directive for the councils to reinforce by-laws and stop under-age patronizing bars and taverns.
He also said that council police have continued monitoring bars and taverns that are abrogating the laws by allowing under-age patrons and opening before stipulated time of 10:00 hours.
Mr Mulunda said the LCC sends out patrols to ensure that bar and tarven owners abide by the laws and open from 10:00 hours and close at 22:00 hours and do not allow under age patrons.
Mr Mulunda said the council has received a number of complaints from the public concerning these issues since the directive was given last month by President Banda, and thanked the public for their positive responses.
He said the council has received particular massive response from residents in Kabwata and Luangwa Compound in Garden who have tipped the council on illegal sale of alcohol in the areas.
Mr Mulunda said under the Liquor Licensing Laws, it is illegal for individuals to sell beer without a liquor license, adding that it is also prohibited to sell beer to under-age children.
He said the council has reprimanded some and also moved in to close other bars and taverns for committing different offences.
Mr Mulunda has reiterated the council’s commitment to close down flouting liquor businesses, especially during the long weekend.

You are right my brother,I like the points you have raised,Those who drink they don’t know when to stop that is very true,the Bible has also emphased on that one,The Bible says Do not drink in excess.
Zambians confuse needs and wants. Beer is not a need it’s a want that doesn’t bring any tangible benefits just temporal ego flattery. Theres nothing wrong with drinking it in moderation , the problem lies in the people that drink it to drown their organs or marinate their insides. I think people in zed drink a lot to drown problems and frustrations, but what I don’t understand is why drink your problems away when they will be waiting when sober. It’s amazing to see how much alcohol destroys people I have cousins younger than me that look way older and some have the ‘shakes’.

#20 Lusaka that is why we need to educate the youths. They must know that beer is not the only beverage there is. That is better than prohibiting consumption with laws.
As for adults, everyone should be able to choose what is right for them. This is what makes out human freedom. As Paul said:

Looks to me that this boy was drunk from fanta.all you can see is a can of fanta around.
The government needs to strengthen the by law or is it the local councils that need to. They must make it mandatory to have ID when buying alcohol, and no one can say they wont have ID because in Zambia you must have an NRC when you are 16 years old. They must make sure that they fine the bar owners that sell alcohol or allow under age patrons in their pub bars and/or clubs. On top of that i think opening bars at 10:00am is not a good idea, in the Kaunda era all bars couldn’t be opened before 2:00pm. I don’t know when they reduced the time. People can’t start drinking in the morning, what time will they have to work? This should also apply to smoking in public places. Smoking under any roof should be illegal including bar and peoples cars with infants on board!
I don’t think that LCC will do that. If you think so .. how will they implement their action? How will it work while street vending still going on despite of comodity NOT fit to be sold in streets. That LCC man is just raising high expectation as nothing will happen thereafter.. LCC stop cheating people in front of camera, media etc..

Why should LCC educate pupils in schools (who are not drunkards)? I was expecting them to educate street kids like the one on the photo. I think something is wrong in Zambia. Wrong priorities all the time.
DRUNK KIDS ARE ON THE STREETS AND NOT CLASSROOMS. USE THAT MONEY TO CREATE JOBS FOR SCHOOL LIVERS AS WELL AS GRADUATES AND THERE WILL BE LESS NUMBERS OF DRUNKS ON OUR STREETS. BETTER STILL PAY NURSES IF U DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH UNPOCKETED MONEY.
the problem of alcohol abuse is a world wide one.if you want to reduce alcohol abuse find things that’ll keep the youths busy:build some football fields,parks and th9ngs like that .right now the only places youths have to recreate in are bars and tarvens.what do you xpect?

I like the directive the lusaka city council have undertaken ,of going in schools to educate on the dangers of alcoholism and other off the counter drugs . however education and sensitising alone won’t do any good ,to the Zambian youth and society at large . My suggestion is that recreational facilities will be an added advantange ,to the young people . For instance even here in the usa , I am always carded each time I ask for a beer in the restaurant ,and the rules are taken seriously ,why not do the same .in our Country ,this will ensure a healthy future for our Zambia .
