Government says that it is working to improve the wellbeing of young people in the country especially the girl child.

Vice president Inonge Wina says despite Zambia being free of any humanitarian crisis, government acknowledges the vulnerability and inequalities faced by women and adolescent girls.

The vice president said that government is however concerned that violence, maternal mortality, child marriage and teenage pregnancies were approaching crisis levels in the country.

Mrs. Wina said that it is for this reason that policies aimed at empowering women and girls as stated in the 7th national development plan and Zambia’s vision 2030 are being adhered to.

The Vice President said this in a speech read on her behalf by minister of higher education Nkandu Luo at the commemoration of the international day of the girl child held at UNZA today 21st October.

And speaking at the same function UNFPA country representative Dr. Mary Otieno said that her organization is committed to collaborating with the Zambian government in reducing inequalities being faced by women and girls in the country.

And bank of Zambia deputy governor Dr Tukiya Kankasa- Mabula said there is need to increase investment in women and girls.

She said that women and girls bear the brunt of poverty and disease care giving and economic disempowerment.

And that the bank of Zambia was closely exploring the issue of financial inclusion as a way to insure equitable access to financial services for women.

This year international day of the girl child’s is celebrated under the theme: “empower girls:before ,during and after the crisis”.
