A Japanese NGO intends to train Zambians in cardiovascular diseases

A JAPANESE Non Governmental Organization working in Zambia intends to train a number of medical personnel in cardiovascular diseases.

Tokushima International Cooperation (TICO) coordinator Kazuko Yamamoto said her organization had lined up of programme to train Zambian medical personnel to administer cases of cardiovascular diseases in the country.

Ms Yamamoto said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the training of more medical staff in heart problems will enhance quality service delivery in the country.

She said her organization has first targeting to send one Zambian to Japan to go and train in perfusion programme.

Ms Yamamoto who did not mention the person targeted to be sent soon said perfunisist is an important person in heart operations.

“A Zambian person will go to Japan to train in a perfusionist programme. A perfectionist is a person who controls an artificial lung during heart operations.

“So this programme is being supported by Mr Atsunori Kitaoka who is a specialist perfusionist and a medical engineer of Tokushima Red Cross in Japan,” she said.

She said her organization which was established in Japan in 1993 has the intention to advance medical care in cardiac problem management in Zambia.

Recently the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka carried a successful surgery on three babies.

UTH senior superintendent Clearance Chiluba confirmed the successful cardiovascular operations on three children in Lusaka yesterday.

  1. This is what we need. I encourgRe a lot of young upcoming professionals to consider taking the training.

As much as it’s a good idea we need to realise that the Zambian patient is different from the Japanese patient.You can train the Zambian doctor in sophisticated surgery but when he tries to apply what he has learned in Zambia it’s useless because in Zambia he has to deal with lack of equipment, lack of medicines,power cuts ,no water, strikes by nurses etc.The posh high critical care wards available in developed countries are not there in Zambia or if they are -they are not as high tech as developed Japan. Zambian cardiologists should train Zambians doctors. They understand the Zambian context better.

    • You can train the Zambian doctor in sophisticated surgery but when he tries to apply what he has learned in Zambia it’s useless because in Zambia he has to deal with corupt pf elements.They will justsend their relative to Japan.
