Grandstand: Kalu’s Motel 6

Share

Zambia’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Ghana at Brisbane Road in London on Wednesday has definitely left a sour taste to Kalusha Bwalya’s honeymoon.

The defeat, that saw Zambia struggle to raise a quorum for the match against Ghana, will be remembered in infamy as Kalusha’s very own Motel 6.

The Motel 6 incident 10 years ago was one of the early catalyst that led to the fall of Teddy Mulonga’s executive.

A hungry and haggard Zambia spent a couple of days at a seedy motel of the same name in Miami courtesy of former Zambia team kit supplier on their way back home following a humiliating 7-1 away friendly defeat at the hands of Honduras on December 12, 1999.

On Wednesday night, organizational shortcomings Kalusha’s administration one and half year reign hit its lowest point when Football House failed to keep its eye on the ball.

A lack of foresight in the late filing of the teams UK visa applications left Herve Renard with only 10 quality players to fall back on as Faz frantically scaled the commons and greens of England for some semblance of Zambian part-timers kicking the ball.

And Hichani Himoonde’s 27th minute own-goal summarized Zambia’s shambolic trip to the London East End.

Moreover, Faz woke-up on Thursday to another embarrassment with a screaming headline on the back-page of one of the major daily papers in the aftermath of the defeat.

Holland based striker Jacob Mulenga said he was not injured as earlier reported by Football House but that he got his call-up note late.

Meanwhile, right across the north sea in Belgium were the young Musonda brothers at Anderlecht with no visa hassles to overcome but no diplomatic pressure was exerted to try and beg Charles to give at least one of his sons a chance to showcase their talents.

And to conclude, Algeria beat Uruguay 1-0 at home on the same night in their preparatory match before facing Zambia on September 6 at the same venue.

That’s the way it was on Wednesday, August 12, 2009.

  1. #2 is right this result was expected and am not disappointed what i actually expected was 12 nill, until we change the administration , our soccer standards will continue to nose dive . epompelele

  2. I think it is time for kalu to concetrate on his celeb life, he is well off as a commentator for SS. Munaile should also concetrate on his constituency. This defeat was a pure sign of poor management if there is any at all. Guys its time we get real with some of these issues.

  3. Bad governance is not only politically experienced, but on the pitch as well. The football house is in confusion!Somebody help please. What a beautiful country we have given to wrong people to run!

  4. I went to watch the match and it was painfull. Please lets put some systems in place that will work at FAZ. It’s embarassing that we have to still talk about such basic things.

    Employ a professional administrator!!!!

Talking about how they played, at no time did Zambia exibit more technique than Ghana. Esien and their No. 6 dominated the midfield and were more than comfortable on the ball. We gave them too much room.

Somebody should also look into getting kit that actually fits. The one zambia used yesterday made them look malnourished and unprofessional.

  5. Can’t agree more with #5. Thoought I saw Kalu on some fashion programme on SABC3. The parliamentary role of Munaile cannot synchronize well with that of the FAZ veep. Kalu will forever remain great but not at the helm of FAZ.

  6. #13 Zaza ba Kalu baleangala naba sungu kubwaiche….. lol iliko bad. Which part of childhood would that be.
I wish him luck. hope it lasts this time.

  7. The Football coach Herve Renard is in Zambia on a holiday of a life time while milking the country of millions he doesn’t deserve. Is he a genuine coach?

  8. #10 Zam was ill prepared.. tell us what went wrong as u witnessed our boy out played.

why playing in London instead of Acra the capital of Ghana. Zam players could have easy access to visas?

  9. When a country goesdown, it starts with leadership and everything else just falls flat. Nothing will ever wake, until we change a lot of things starting with the our leaders reason. There is just o way you are going to beat Ghana or achieve any meaningful results when your country is always in Shambles?. These things do not just happen, you have to develop through and be realistic?? At the moment, we just have to forget everything, until we have thr right people leading our great nation.

  10. Camp in SA, play Kaiser Chiefs D side and wallop them 31-0? What circus! Better size up against Monze select or Chimbamilonga 11 and save tax payerz money.

  11. Why embaress themselves like that….Kalu was busy chasing skirts and donno what else Munaile was doing but has to do with his political party thing

  12. #19. Shidada … what I am trying to bring to your attention is that if Ghana was the host let the match be played in Ghana or In each country’s respective area.

Why you think Zambia should play in south Africa. Zambia has own grounds,, renting a ground for hosting a foreign nation is costly.
Zambia should not depend heavily on south Africa, must develop its own infrustructure.
Where will zambia’s pride lay when it depend on S.A even for medical treatment.. South African senior gvt officers even Zuma has NEVER been to Zambia for treatment. Teta is recovering in SA ..Why not UTH????????????

  13. When is the demonstration to football House? Please send or post details. Is there a provision the Sports Council Constitution for Impeachment? I am not going to make myself believe in a Kalusha Bwalya Miracles otherwise com January and February 2010, We might not have Angola for the MTN Nations Cup and June/July the World Cup and cheer my beloved Zambia.
I dont think what happened last night will call for Kalu’s Amnesty he Must GO!
I don’t even want to hear an excuse, either he resigns on Moral grounds or we force him out. Let him apply for domicile in South Africa since he’s there every second day.

  14. nambala 25 the evidence is right in your face why we can’t make anything work.
look at the comments being posted after a fiasco of organisation exhibited.. we should seek the executive to be sacked.this way the next person will watch their back.

  15. The FAZ admini instaed of organising the match, they were busy salivating and thirsting for the free Booze at Kalus wedding in Jo’berg. Its saddening that the Faz president does not even reside in Zambia. It hurts to see our TAX money being wasted because of lack of seriousness exhibited by Kalu and his friends. Kalu is socially a failure ooH sorry, Administratively. He needs to go simple. Dont even blame munaile, When the head is wrong, the rest is …..

  16. Actually if you want to see Zambian inefficiency start from the coverage of this story on this very page. The story is very short on details and long on accusations to say nothing of the poor grammar. I do read East African papers they are definitely light years ahead of ours. We are trying to find out what happened and it is not being narrated to us properly. However, generally Zambians are inefficient because of a poor education system. People come out of school half-baked and the result is the poor state of everything in Zambia. We cant run ZESCO, FAZ, government, ZAMTEL because the employees cant stand up to the challenges. Start the revolution now improve education!!!

  17. Yes and I agree with Nkole Says. the calibre of blogging is also reflective of the quality of the Zambian education system’s products. There’s so little sense in a lot of what bloggers say here you wonder how they are going to help the situation improve! I think we should just give up on Zambians solving their own problems. We are now reaping what we have sowed the past 40 years.

  18. ZAMBIA NATIONAL TEAM NSHIMA BOYS VS GHANA NATIONAL TEAM KINKI BOYS. WHAT IS MORE HARDER BETWEEN NSHIMA AND KINKI? NO WONDER THE NSHIMA BOYS WERE REDUCED TO MERE MINIONS A SAD SITE TO WATCH. HOW DO YOU THINK U CAN GET A VISA TO UK WITHIN A DAY WHEN U HAVE NOT DONE YOUR ADMNISTRATIVE HOME WORK? HOW DO U RESORT TO UK STUDENTS TO PLAY AND FIT INTO THE COACH GAME PLAN WITHIN 2 HOURS? THERE ARE MORE GENUINE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS REGARDING THE WAY THINGS ARE BEING DONE IN ZAMBIA. THE COUNTRY HAS BECOME A SMALL KANTEMBA.

  19. Besides the failures of faz can someone tell me what the job of the high commissioner is london. am sure they must have known that the nation team needed to come to london and they should have just jumped on the tube and get the visas sorted out. Reality guys lets forget all about development and going forward. how long have we been talking about the change, yes we have changed over the yes unfortunately we have changed for the worst. we are better off not going to the world cup to make up the numbers and fulfill the fixtures. our league is in shambles and our national team in disarray. way forward is guys lets jst be worrying about households. keep your house in order and you can smile all day

  20. where was stupid chris katongo and his erstwhile psycophant brother.when patriots and more skilled players like Essien, muntari,Agogo where busy identifying themselves with their country our silly so called stars were elsewhere scratching their balls.

  21. they call some players out of there intreats also , every time they want to expose new players , so that the scouts who are watching such games can see them young players and the same kalusz will be managers in selling young players , they never serious in calling old players thats why they told them very late , it was just for formality sake . they want to expose players that they can sell and get commission , becoz we have good and expirienced players pa zed . but they are never called . the likes of Billy mwanza and so . they never called coz kalu knows he can not sell them , they have there own teams .

  22. Well, if only Mr Kalusha can spend more time in Zambia running FAZ matters as opposed to living in South Africa and running FAZ by remote control, maybe we would not have suffered such a humiliating defeat at the hands of those West African “bangwele”. My verdict, FIRE KALUSHA!

  23. It does not mean that if you were a good football player you will make a good football administrator. FAZ needs people with some good management background and acumen.
I was so embarrassed when a friend called to ask me to tune in to SS3. Tom Mlambo and his group were laughing about what transpired in London because of poor management – like fielding in of students in the game. And it is like all Zambians were involved.

  24. we need to start firing people this country has gone to the dogs. what happened was so embarrassing.Mwanza the communications officer should be fired, he told the country a liar.ALL kalu’s chaps should go. Mr kalusha bwalya 1988 African footballer of the year., Fifa , caf, cosafa, world 2010 committee member and soccer Africa, super sport soccer analyst. we appreciate wat you did on the soccer field but please leave administration to people who can manage that is if zambia has people who are good in administration?

  25. This Renard chap is a pre school physical education teacher,Kalu and Munaile are clowns someone please direct them to the nearest circus.

  26. it is really crazy how such a thing could happen: lucking professional players on a Fifa day. I can’t still believe the coach was forced to used unknown zambian students to feature against Ghana. I t is a shame for the country!! it is time we became serious and professional. Professional issues have to be hundled by professional people and not vice versa. we zambians are full of pontentials if only we could be a little bit more serious. Let us stop shaming ourselves, and instead let’s show what we are capable of, our true zambian colours, be it in football or politiques.

  27. Don’t even think about touching great Kalu, else we will start dancing to the FIFA wallaboloo. If anybody iz Kalu’z friend, talk him into voluntary relinquishing the FAZ prezidency. He can still contribute in so many other wayz

  28. No. 47 “The only Living Jay” Dont you think someone should be held accountable about this embbarasing mess that FAZ got us in? Other countries might not trust Zambia’s capability of hosting thm if cant even organize our own travel intinerary. You can never get a Visa if you dont provide a physical addresses of the place you are going to. Ask Kennedy and the Crew in S.A if they had a Physical Address to Leyton Orients football ground, or they Hotel they where to stay, did they show proof that they had booked in for accomodation? This points can ease off the pressure from Kalu but then they fall on Solly Pandor since he is the team manager and must have had the responsibility of how the team shud go. So guys Anif cant not do since his fellow Indian was too excited to go to London nd…

  29. Here in Europe Kalusha and Renard should have been fired ages ago. They know that. Why are they still in those positions when the performance of the team is getting worse by the day?
