Three Copperbelt University (CBU) fourth year students have been arrested by police in connection with the burning of a car during a student protest over two weeks ago.
Home Affairs Minister Lameck Mangani disclosed that two of the suspects were nabbed in Livingstone while the third one was arrested in Rufunsa area in Chongwe district. The fourth accomplice is said to be still on the run.
Mr Mangani said this at the Reformed Church in Zambia (RCZ) education day launch where he was guest of honour.
He said police have launched a man-hunt for the suspect adding that the apprehended trio was nabbed on Saturday in separate dragnets set by police.
Mr Mangani said the two student suspects who allegedly stole cell phones were traced in Livingstone by police in conjunction with a named mobile service provider while police recovered a bag in Chongwe from the third suspect.
He urged parents to educate their children on good morals as opposed to taking the law into their own hands when aggrieved.
He said it is the duty of parents and the church as stakeholders to guide their children and shape them into responsible citizens.
He said the trio has been charged with arson and they will appear in court soon.
Mr Mangani said police and other the law enforcement agencies will not relent on clumping down on criminals who are bent on frustrating government efforts.
Recently CBU students ran amok and destroyed property at the institution as well as that of private individuals forcing government to close the institution indefinitely.

Those young men should only be charged for theft. Its a pity they went to that extent. If it is indeed true that they were found with personal effects of the man whose car was burnt they must face the law for stealing. Meanwhile if it can be proved that the expelled students did not steal, their expulsion must be uplifted. A few students should not be held acountable for a crime committed by a mob.
Sad situation indeed, Intellectuals sure!!!
A serious crime was commited and it is fair that the perpetrators be brought to book. This should not only apply to the disadvantaged and the poor in society but to all. We have seen some rich people and politicians commit serious crimes and go unpunished.
These Monk chaps are just pomowez, why steal from a passer by surely – jail them!

I think justice should be stiffened to those who think law can be taken into their hands. I salute the Police for the good Job well done. Do these students know how painful it is to purchase a vehicle? It is a big sacrifice and there comes to destroy it
Interesting fact is that they are all Tongas with ties to Hchiilema’s UPND party on campus.Mwenya Musenga was the handler of these kids .As if without skills, HH and Musenga have taken it personal that the kids be reinstated unconditionally at CBU.HH must thus take responsibility for the SUV burnt, the ZK 200,000,000.00 million stolen, all cell phones and penalty of any damage to the city infrastructure. He should also bear the legal cost of these kids in court until they are sent to Mukobeko maximum prison for attempted murder on the innocent businessman.
#7 Chapi, give us more details if you have any.
Mr Mangani said police and other the law enforcement agencies will not relent on clumping down on criminals who are bent on frustrating government efforts. The three Copperbelt University (CBU) fourth year students have been arrested by police in connection with the burning of a car and theft of over k 200 million during a student protest over two weeks ago. OOHH POOR STUDENT WHY DONT YOU REASON BEFORE ACTING? 4TH YEAR AND THE 5 TH YEAR IN MUKOBEKO PRISON SHAME ON DEVILS…
Police shud investigate how this old man was moving with over K 200m its not true at his age movng with such monies without proper escot and wat business does he do this man can be found with a case to ans he might be a money swindler as well. Pipo in lusaka ar shot for K 5m by armd robbers and this moves with 200 hell no
This old man is not an inocent Zambian. We all know that a cash deposit of more than twenty five milliion will trigger an investigation for possible money laundering. Why did he deposit that money if it came from legal business? Was it coming from drug dealings or possibly from legal business but not deposited for fear of beaing caught buy tax authorities for non declaration of correct income? Surely he should been ashamed to confess this crime. However that that does not vindicate the students involved.
