Four passengers perished after a speeding public passenger bus they were in and belonging to Juldan Motors overturned as failed to negotiate a turn along Kasama Luwingu road, this morning.

ZANIS reports that Northern Province Police Commissioner Richard Mweene has confirmed the accident in Kasama today adding that the accident involving a Lusaka bound Juldan Motors passenger bus service of registration number ABE 6940 happened around 06:30 hours this morning.

Mr. Mweene says the accident occurred as the passenger bus was approaching Kasama town from Mporokoso District in Northern Province.

Three people including the driver died on spot when the bus overturned while another passenger died upon arrival at St Fidelis Mission Hospital in Kasama, he said.

Mr. Mweene said so far seven passengers are in critical condition and 20 others with multiple injuries are all admitted at Kasama General Hospital for treatment.

The Regional Police Commissioner has disclosed that preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the bus was allegedly over-speeding at the time of the accident.

Mr. Mweene has since appealed to the traveling public to alert and report any motorists abrogating road traffic rules on public roads.

And Road Transport and Safety Agency ( RTSA ) Kasama Station Manager Milembo Mpandachulu described the accident as unfortunate.

Mr. Mpandachulu has since called on public service drivers to always adhere to the speed limit for long distance vehicles in order to avoid road accidents.

Meanwhile, Kasama District Mayor Frederick Chisanga, who rushed to the accident scene, has expressed sadness at the loss of lives in the tragic road traffic accident which happened along the Kasama-Luwingu Road this morning.

  1. Total stupidity and gross carelessness. Just how does one afford to overturn at such a simple junction – well tarred road by the PF government. I feel for the bereaved. Its really a sad moment.
Let the driver go to hell. Its just the right time for him to go to hell.
    Disaster!

    • This is a second deadly incident involving Juldan Motors in less than a week! A Lusaka bound bus from Joburg, RSA, was another …

    • This is very possible with Fatigue! A fatigued driver is more impaired than a legally drunk driver. Fatigue impairs judgement and who knows, he could have dosed off due to micro sleeps common with Fatigue! RTSA must investigate these accidents the way Air crash investigations are done. Reports must be presented to the public and also measures to be put in place to avoid recurrences. Emotions must be taken out of the picture for the root causes to be found!

  2. … strange things happening … in our beloved country , I as Dr Muyangana, all i say cry for the …country Zambia / Afraica… reminiscent of Allan Patton …cry for the unborn child . Whom is the in-heritage of our fear and insecurity…

  3. …lives have been lost …what really transpired , an objective question? How do we remedy ? and how do we curtain similar happenings , would say objectivity thoughts from Dr Muyangana …

  4. Sad development indeed!! But some of these buses are even too old to be going on long distance journeys!! A thorough check could prove that these buses are not mechanically fit to take such journeys where speed is of essence!! Please let RTSA toughen the checks and further, there is too much pressure on drivers to meet revenue targets to a point where passenger safety is relegated to second place over money!

  5. Could this be poor judgement arising from fatigue?

Instead of shutting down Juldan Motors, RTSA must work with Juldan Motors and do an audit of their operations to see where they are going wrong. Review Driver Rosters and see if drivers are having 7 hours of sleep every day and a 24 hours rest before taking their next trip! This review should be extended to other operators!

Shutting down a company the way some regulators do is not only myopic but irresponsible and overzealous!

  7. Just like PF has failed to run the country, these bus companies have failed Zambians; Ban these China made buses and bring back Leyland buses; how many times are we to tell RATSA to see to it that public buses should have speed limiters and have other devises to monitor driver alcohol consumption? Why are Zambians so passive that they are afraid of telling off drivers to stop speeding? we can’t have people dying from these accidents like flies;

  8. Zambia Police should learn to be professional, it is alleged that the bus was over speeding not that it’s a fact.
What proof do you have it was speeding?
Ain’t these buses fitted with speed limiters?
What investigative tools does Zambia Police have to determine over speeding accidents?
Passengers and onlookers sometimes don’t even know the speed limit of the road but claim over speeding.
Let’s not add fire to an already tense situation where people have lost lives.
