SADC doing fairly well in combating global crisis

South African High Commissioner to Zambia Moses Chikane says the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region has done fairly well in combating the negative effects of the global financial crisis.

Mr Chikane says the SADC region has managed to put in place positive and sound economic interventions that have helped in lessening the negative effects of the global financial recession.

He said SADC states are an interesting family of young democracies that engage themselves in their quest to find their feet economically.

The South African High Commissioner noted that the global recession had negative effects on many sectors of the economy in SADC and the African continent in general.

Mr Chikane told ZANIS in an interview that despite financial recession affecting many sectors of the region’s economy, SADC has done fairly well economically.

Mr Chikane has however called on SADC states to coordinate the transport system in the region in order to boost the tourism industry in the region.

He said without proper coordination of the transport system, the hospitality will continue having flight problems it is currently facing.

Mr Chikane said there is need for SADC states to begin a one stop traveling system especially in the aviation sector.

He said this would make it possible for small airlines to fly to places where bigger airlines have no interest in.

  1. Goodmorning LT and goodmorning nambala 1 Sony Eric, Where wenze you? Long time bro!

I agree with you my brother, this statement has zero substance in it. I recall hearing about SADC as early as my primary school days and yet the standard of living has since then continously retrogressed from bad to worse Besides, this Mr. Chikane should know that the economic recession is not even the greatest challenge that SADC has been facing all along – compared to corruption and theft of government funds. These are greater setbacks to the development of Southern Africa.

  2. What we know about the global financial crisis is that we don’t know very much.people are *****s and will believe everything they are told- and the press relishes the fallout…
Tell them to eat pomegranates! ( The prophet Mohammed is said to have adviced his followers to eat pomegranates to overcome envy and hatred….maybe that will work for others too? The global financial crisis has brought with it a tidal wave of anti-Semitic sentiments, much of which has led to full-blown conspiracy theories postulating the crisis is part of a Jewish plot. While usual suspects Hamas and Iran have both put in their expected two pennies – with Hamas blaming the Jewish lobby in Washington and Tehran opting for a more far-reaching Zionist plot to control the entire world’s economy.

  3. “The ancient tales of Jews and money are always lying just beneath the surface. As we saw after 9-11, every time there is trouble and uncertainty in economics or worldwide events Jews become scapegoats, and ugly anti-Semitic myths are resurrected.”

  4. But I soldier, am the Douglas MacArthur of this era,I will fight for ZED till I rule ZED.The shadows are lengthening for me. The twilight is here. My days of old have vanished, tone and tint. They have gone glimmering through the dreams of things that were. Their memory is one of wondrous beauty, watered by tears, and coaxed and caressed by the smiles of yesterday. I listen vainly, but with thirsty ears, for the witching melody of faint bugles blowing reveille, of far drums beating the long roll. In my dreams I hear again the crash of guns, the rattle of musketry, the strange, mournful mutter of the battlefield. But in the evening of my memory, always I come back to West Point. Always there echoes and re-echoes: Duty, Honor, Country. Today marks my final roll call with you, but I want…

  5. Mr Chikane, You are typical of the Zambian leadership, you just wake up from your dreams and talk baseless things which mean nothing. Why are you not giving specifics and details of the so called ‘positive and sound economic intervetions that have lessened the effects of the global crisis’? The smart thing to do is to shut up when you have nothing sensible to say. We all know that SADC is nothng but a talking shop where you Chikane and others meet to wine, dine and dose off.

  6. Greetings Ghost Dog, I can see that you’re breathing poetic fire so I wont pick a fight with you, lol. Nice to see you back anyways. Continue propounding and have a good day. I’m off to take a midday rest.

  7. I would not go out with a guy like ghost dog, just a wannabe, not my type. Thanks I am happy with my Irish boyfriend, Ghost whatever looks desperate for attention.

  10. Mulongoti wondered: “Do those Chiluba sold houses to at K10,000 hate him? What about those he gave favours as President? He also has a big following. If the court says ‘acquit this person’, we have to follow,” he said. Mulongoti said the court heard that the same account where there was government money, there was also money which Chiluba said was his. If we jail this person who has money in the same account as government, what will be the implications? That is the argument the magistrate had which sounded very logical”. I for one have never come accross such rotten illogicval thinking. Mulongoti’s AIDS has indeed arrived in his head, chinangwa!

  11. By the way, what evidence has Mulongoti to prove that it was Chiluba who deposited US$8.5 million in ZAMTROP? Further, selling council house for K10,000 was the most gullible thing to do because councils are now assetless and stone broke unable to provide any civic services only because a stupid ***** sold their houses for nothing other than gaining political mileage for an illegal third term. This is the same line of thinking that characterized Teta during his last days, I hope the same is with Mulongoti, he is saying bye bye! Ko Zwaaaaaaaaaaaa, Mulosuntwe yebo, watusabila pe!

  12. Ghostdog don’t cheat yourself of ruling ZED. Ask Prof. C. Chilwa. We tot him a lesson he will never forget. Did you see how I clobbered that UNIP chap in Chitambo by elections. Am waiting for u have camped at Lusaka inter. airport see u. Am told that picture is the picture of the year.

  13. Bloggers, why should the diplomat predict doom. Dispute what he is saying with data not with a negative , self declared failure attitude. What is your take how has SADC fared and what comparisons are you using. For one no financial institution has collapsed or iveb gone under supervision in Zed and probably the whole of SADC, Zambia is forecasting a growth of 4.6% while Geramny and the USa will probably have negative growth figures at the worst and 1% at the best ( China could be as high as 8%)

  14. I agree with those saying the article has little substance. The man should have told us what they have done re global crisis. Typical shallow minds.

Secondly SADC or Africa and the East did not suffer from teh financial crisis pay say, but were only hit by the resultant global recession. Reason, out buyers in the west were hit by the financial crisis – so China could not export as much and therefore could not import as much copper for instance. For instance, Standard Chartered Bank was not hit like other banks because it trades in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. So rteally, Africa was spared. What was there for SADC to do, then? In developed countries, solutions have come by govts pumping in a lot of money. What did SADC do?

  15. malabishi indeed! (rotflol!) sadc is just another level/layer/… of politics and bureaucracy. mr. chikane is south african by the way.
sadc governments and politicians need to get out of the business-of-running-business. only private business people with the expertise and profit-and-loss discipline will make sadc a VIABLE integrated economic region.

  16. #18 contd

Look at Zambia for instance. There was very little we could do about teh global recession except sit and wait for the commodity markets to pick up, which they have done. Even so, that’s because other govts like China, USA, UK+European’s have pumped in money to stimulate their economies. The beginning ands end of this crisis was financial.

Only last week Situmbeko was saying the West should provide a stimulus to African economies. So what is SADC talking about.

    Mindboggling.

  17. Uk – zed Observer He was talking in an interview and saying that he feels that farely well. I would assume he is saying compared to their predictions. Snd look at Zed, in all fareness, the government maanged to mitigate the effect on the Mining sector as can be seen by the new investors in Mazabuka and Luanshya, thats not to say they could not have done more. And anyway no Ambassador is employed to criticise his country

  18. @ghostdog the new comer is around.those are some nice lines.@Mushota becareful the nigga is dope.@ghost man let’s battle…request sent
