The University of Zambia Library Management has distanced itself from a poster on dress code which warned female students to dress modestly in the Library as dressing half naked disturbed male students.

The University of Zambia Library Management said the poster was not authored by the UNZA library Management and investigations have been instituted so that the culprits are brought to book. This is contained in a press statement released to the media by the University Librarian Christine Kanyengo.

The University of Zambia has no dress code. Tolerance and diversity is the bedrock of the institution. The University of Zambia Libraries will not tolerate old discredited misogynist views in our space the statement read. The UNZA library management unreservedly apologized to female library users for any offence caused.

The poster does not reflect who we are : we are a space that promotes access to all our library materials to people from all walks of life. We urge all our female university of Zambia Library users to feel comfortable when using their library, the statement read.

The Library management reiterated that the University of Zambia is a SECULAR institution built on the principles of diversity and cherished academic freedom. The word University is a derivative of the word ‘universe’ to mean a place where everything is studied, where young people are encouraged to explore the frontiers of knowledge.

In that regards the University of Zambia policies have enabled its female students to excel as reflected in 54% female graduating students and 46% male graduating students at the 47th University of Zambia graduation ceremony of December 2017.

    • what is modest ?? and why is it emphasized for women …. this passive supression of freedoms should end that is why we remain in political bondage with such myopic beliefs that leaders are put there by God despite the fact that you walk distances and line up to vote. Africans!

    • Let the men stop going to the Library! women will dress whatever way they want and get an education.

    • The fact still remains the same. Female students must dress decent casual wear when at the college. The should not look like hooookers who congest streets half nakeeeed in the streets.
Prof. Nkandu Luo was castigated by Cheiftainess Nkomesha for wearing VERY SHORT dress – she even gave Luo a chitenge to cover herself..
I hope it is not Luo who is propagating this dress code. In 1998 Luo was again castigated in parliament for her poor dress code. If the HEAD is rotten what do you expect from the BODY.
Just google Nkandu Luo dress code and you will be shocked with the results. At least Dora Siliya has improved after she was also cautioned in parliament.

    • AAAAA, You do you mean you have no mum style type of clothes? I still see them in the shop. You just get yours from Kamwala.

  1. The notice indeed looks suspicious. A genuine notice should have carried with it a signature of the librarian as well as the stamp. This particular one seems to from a Monk within UNZA. Well done management in disassociating yourselves from it. This is where journalist also need to be professional. How does a journalist pick a suspicious notice and attribute it to management without without finding out from Management. The Nigerian Born BBC reporter who is currently in the country should do a good job and not just make stories out of noting.

  2. What a relief and thank goodness Christine is leading the way to sanity! Let not fundamentalism take root anywhere least of all at institutions of higher learning. There are enough broken countries from the yoke of useless anachronistic ideas.

  4. How do you distance yourselves from this when its already hit BBC News Africa…typical lazy Zambian govt workers off sleeping on weekends!!

    • Well maybe the BBC correspondent should have sought a comment from management before rushing to publish. It’s typical of Zambian reporters to take anything on social media as truth

    • Imagine even a reasonably decision, you back track. To be a good leader ku kosa. Not, a small female student akutinya at iyo sorry bakalamba. yo own daughter ati sorry. Aha kaya

  5. Surely if you can not concentrate in the library because of half naked women then you are not mature enough to be uni…. Do they not have security at UNZA who should have dealt with these posters before they went viral

  6. Nothing wrong with the ad and the staff must not distance themselves from it! However, if they distanced themselves from HH, that would be a noble cause.

  7. As much as I hate discrimination of any type in society, I as well do not support a notion that students should be showing their Bambas and G-strings in the Library.

  8. At least I have a glimpse of the Library Entrance. It looks dirty with all that mold showing on the wall aand stairs. Library management please do something about it and make the outside appealing.

    • Am sure they still have the same old books …this is where they need to pro-active and partner with British libraries or a British university to update their catalogue

  9. I have spotted two grammatical errors on the poster. The last sentence “Modest is the way to go.” is ungrammatical. It is supposed to read “Modesty is the way…”. An adjective cannot be the subject of a sentence. The second mistake is ” a situation which is disturbing …”. Th use of the present progressing is wrong in this contest. Thus, the poster is not a product of the university.

    • If they are a secular university and allow all sorts of ideas in the name of academic freedom then let them allow sex all over the campus even in broad daylight, all sorts of devil and pagan worship, LGBT and have no rules what so ever. Lets see about that.

  10. Dress codes are normal. I believe a simple denial was in order rather than talking about how misogynist the notice was. If the notice contained restrictions for both men and women it would have been balanced. To me it seems this poster hurt the women more than it did men. In my view when the culprits are caught this issue ought to be interrogated a little more further in order to bring some harmony otherwise knowing our university this could be an expression of more things to come on the same subject.

The issue centres around whether girls should face discipline or correction for exposed bra straps

An Essex District High School student has been suspended for protesting the school’s dress code, after she says several of her friends were sent home or told to change because their bra straps were showing.

Mallory Johnston, a Grade 10 student, spent Monday night making a dozen posters that she hung on school walls the next day.

She and her friends were upset because of what they believe is a pattern of discipline or correction against…
