The Centre for Election and Governance (CEG) has charged that former defence Minster, George Mpombo has resorted to outbursts and use of bad language against the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) because he is trying to run way from collective responsibility which he is part of.
CEG Trustee Gershom Musonda said in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today that Mr Mpombo’s attacks on the MMD amounts to failed politics of appeasement and an attempt to run way from responsibilities.
He said Mr Mpombo who was third in command from the President did nothing to improve the country’s democratic governance record despite him having such a huge influence on cabinet policies and decisions.
Mr Musonda said as the then defence Minister Mr. Mpombo contributed to most of government’s decisions made during his time.
He alleged that he also failed to improve the welfare of men in uniform adding that he left them with no accommodation and other basic allowances.
Mr. Musonda wondered how Mr. Mpombo now expects to have a change of scene in life and help society address local problems after retiring from a public position.
He urged him to step down and pave way for the young generation to get into government and the country to move forward and attain its vision of being a middle income nation by 2030.
Mr Musonda has meanwhile disagreed with the assumption that President Banda should fit into the legacy of the late President Levy Mwanawasa saying every person is unique and different from others.
He said it is therefore important for President Banda to be given support and be left to be independent with his leadership style.

This chap is contradicting himself. First, he says Mpombo is running away from responsibility by resigning. Then he goes on to call for Mpombo’s resignation! Which he has already done! As he has pointed out, mpombo was in a position to influence Govt decisions. Somehow, he seemed to have realised that he had no influence and decided to step down. The president has all the power. Let’s not even pretend. Look at the behaviour of Mulongoti, Kunda and Shikapwasha. Less than 2 yrs ago, these guys were anti-Chiluba. Today, they are his chief advocates. On Mr. Mpombo, I think Gershom is right – regardless of his motives. Mr. Mpombo has never clearly stated why he resigned – I doubt that it on principle. Levy resigned because of Sata’s insubordination followed by Kafupi’s failure to take action – we are know. Mr. Mpombo all of sudden becomes a very concerned citizen – please!!!!!

I remember at one time the POST took a picture of him kneeling before the late LPM(synonymous of boot licking). Mpombo like Shakafuswa, Magande, Chibombamilimo were part of a curtail during the late LPM’s rule. Those guys were highly favored RIGHT HAND MEN. Show me one person who has ever resigned from government and gone on to make something of himself in life. Even Mr Sata, highly active and agenda mover in MMD has aked the Zambian people 3 times to become President and has failed. Kapwepwe, Miyanda, Tembo, Mungomba, Ben all failed. It does not mean that they were not capable, but voters do not take kindly to traitors. Those who quit can never be winners.
Ndola Alderman #19 – I do not think that we are sympathizers of RBB as you insinuate (and I can speak for myself). But Mr. Mpombo has no moral right to yap crap. Please let people not pretend all is cozy when they are in Govt. but when they fall out of favor they want to give us an impression that they care – and you want to glorify them? What short-sightedness! Mpombo is no hero, period. He needs to be told in very clear terms. The battle to straighten our country is on but Mpombo shall never lead this crusade.
