A delegation from the Conference of Catholic Bishops in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to help with the current political tension in that country.
The Catholic Bishops, led by Archbishop Fridolin Besungu, noted that the political tension in the DRC is worrying adding that, the situation has raised fear among the general citizenry in that country, including the Church.
The Bishops said this when they called on President Lungu at State House this morning.
Archbishop Besungu who is also the Vice Chairperson for the Conference of Catholic Bishops in the DRC, appealed to President Lungu to find ways of helping out with the problem in the DRC.
He revealed that it is the desire of the church in that country to ensure that the country conducts free and fair elections, and that peace is restored.
He added that, a committee in charge of setting elections has already been formed, noting that the date for the forth-coming election has already been set.
Archbishop Besungu however, revealed that though the elections have been set, the growing political tension in the DRC is sending mixed signals among its people.
And President Edgar Lungu has assured the Catholic Bishops that he will use his position as Chairman of the SADC Troika on Politics, Peace and Security, to try and help restore peace in the DRC.
President Lungu noted that the two peoples have shared good standing relations, adding that, it is disheartening to hear and read of the political tension in that country.
The Head of State further assured the Bishops that he will work with SADC members and ensure that the electoral process in that country is carried out free and fair.
President Lungu further noted that, he understands that the electoral process in the DRC is not an inclusive process and feared that, should the tension continue, Zambia will witness an influx of more refugees seeking asylum in the country.
President Lungu also noted with concern that the electoral process in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) is not inclusive as it should be.
President Lungu has expressed fear that the outcome of DRC’s election may be undermined following the exclusion of Jean-Pierre Bemba, Moise Katumbi and three other former Prime Ministers.
Presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo are slated for December 23rd, 2018.
Really laughable this utterly lazy bum Edgar has failed to take the lead in simple basic dialogue in Zambia with opposition ..he is the one calling on the talkshop SADC to curb Political tensions in DRC.
