Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation Spokesperson Miriam Tonga says the corporation needs K10.5 billion ( EUR1.5 million) to purchase broadcasting rights from CC Foot Limited of Switzerland for the live screening of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) tournament which kicks off on 10th January, 2010 in Angola.
Ms Tonga, in a statement to ZANIS sports today, said due to this excessive charge for the rights, the Corporation is appealing to the Corporate world and other soccer loving individuals for support by sponsoring the games.
The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation has in the past depended on sponsorship to meet the costs associated with the broadcast of such events, but considering the size of the advertising market in Zambia, raising K10.5 billion from sponsorship alone is a big challenge.
She added that the CC Foot is working in conjunction with AFNEX, who has refused to reduce the charges even after representations from the African Union of Broadcasters.
” The African Union of Broadcasters (AUB) is now exploring other options in a bid to help national broadcasters, who are members to access the rights, ” she said.
She lamented that unless the Corporation finds partners to pool resources together for the purchase of the rights, the Corporation will not be able to show the matches to the soccer loving Zambian public.
She added that ZNBC has, however, secured the rights for the FIFA 2010 World Cup involving 64 matches and will show the entire tournament that kicks off in June, 2010.
She said ZNBC has been making frantic efforts to get the cost of the matches for the past few months but the figure was only communicated after the conclusion of the qualifying matches which saw Zambia qualifying to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Your tv licence goes to cover the presidents many trips in and out of the country, the ministers many promises of what they intend to do, cadres marching in solidarity with govt, small political parties statements in support of govt, ngo’s in support of govt. so you see after all this, there’s not much cash left to show sports, cartoons for our kids or anything else for that matter

This worries me alot. This is December and we are still looking for money and the tournament is next month. Thats why people on this blog insult. What type of management do we have at this r.otten broadcaster who cant plan. They know that their is such an event at a given time, did they put it in the budget? Previously we had companies assisting and it was not an issue. This clearly gives a picture of companies we have in Zambia. The government is partly to blame,they should put up policies for companies to invest back in social activitivies. Now l doubt it if the type of Investors we have will folk any money. Good luck!

Use TV license for live streaming of the Africa Cup of Nations. This Ms Tonga is Dull, why make such a provacative statement. #4 and 5 sadly, the majority of people in Zambia can’t afford DStv. This ZNBC problems boils down to what transpered during the last tournament where ZNBC failed to raise the needed funds to buy the same rights. The then Information Minister Mike Mulongoti contended that football was “not a matter of life or death’ and encourged people without DStv to go to night clubs to watch the matches.
When you pay it will show. ZNBC slogan what are you telling us?. When there is buy elections we dont  even know where the money is coming from unbudgeted for only told next week buy election. After CAN2010 in June is World cup after world cup 2011 is Presidential and pariamentary elections will see you.
