Government has strongly condemned a Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) senior officer for assaulting his workmate last week.
Labour and Social Security Minister Austin Liato has since called on law enforcement officers to ensure that the culprit is brought to book and dealt with accordingly.
Mr. Liato was reacting to ZRA’s senior commissioner who allegedly assaulted a female human resource manager at his work place in unexplained circumstance.
He told ZANIS in Lusaka today that the commissioner’s decision to beat up a female human resources manager was an indication that there was no safety for the weaker sex in most institutions.
He said the matter was likely to impact negatively on the operations of the authority.
He further implored employers in the country to ensure that work places were safe for all employees.
The minister said government would punish anyone violating human rights.
And the Zambia Institute of Human Resource Management (ZIHRM) has expressed disappointment at the development and has since called on the police to intensify their investigations.
ZIHRM president Namucana Musiwa said there is need for the police to act quickly, saying this was the only way to discourage workers from committing similar offences.
Last week, a ZRA senior commissioner was arrested and suspended from work for allegedly assaulting his workmate in unexplained circumstances.

What George Siame did is not acceptable but if we got facts there are people who have gone scott free from a murder due to un resistable provocation. We may not have the facts and our reporters NEVER do us a service before reporting. They never investigate and analyse the pros and cons fo any story before they publicise it. In my view that is wrong as they are peddling the dangers of a single story. Let both parties give their sides of the story and analyse their responses before you report. In that way, you will be helping the readers who in most cases don’t bother to analyse issues. Get to know the causes if you are going to prevent such actions in future. A friend employee of ZRA called me the other day to tell me they may not get the bonus this year because they have not met the target.
I find that very difficult to understand because this is one institution that has exceeded it’s targets from the time it was formed. The year 2009 has been very difficult for the whole world and I do not see how ZRA management would fail to understand that Zambia is not a closed system not to be affected by what is happening globally.
Bank of Zambia employees, who were paid bonuses even during the years of the Meridian Bank closure and many other banks that followed, enjoy better conditions of service and get a bonus every year for managing the funds that ZRA collects.
