Chama District in Muchinga Province has been hit with serious floods resulting in the loss of four lives.

The floods that have hit Chama South Constituency as a result of heavy rains being experienced in the area have also, submerged crops destroying infrastructure such such bridges and feeder roads.

Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary (PS), Jobbicks Kalumba has confirmed the development to ZANIS in Chinsali this morning adding that, four people who have lost their lives were attempting to cross the flooded Luangwa River.

Dr. Kalumba stated that 11 houses in Chifunda and Mapamba areas in Chama South Constituency have also collapsed due the floods leaving many families homeless.

He further mentioned that crops have equally been damaged following a second wave of floods which occurred on the following day lamenting that this may result in hunger in the area.

Dr. Kalumba has however, appealed to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to quickly intervene into the matter by coming to the aid of the flood victims.

He notes that there is urgent need of conducting an aerial assessment of the damage caused in affected areas in order to come up with urgent solutions in the affected areas.

The PS has since assured the people of Chama South that Government will quickly come to their aid by providing relief food to them.

Last year, Chama North was equally characterised with heavy floods that left a number of families homeless with 377 houses crumpling, crops damaged and main bridges washed away.
