Northern Province Permanent Secretary Mwalimu Simfukwe has bemoaned the deplorable state of Mporokoso Secondary School.
Mr Simfukwe said the extent of dilapidation at the only secondary school in the district was a typical example of administrative failure both at local, district and provincial levels.
He wondered what all these three levels of leadership were doing to allow the school to degenerate to such levels of dilapidation without taking any remedial measures.
Mr. Simfukwe was speaking during a conducted tour of Mporokoso Secondary School.
He has however commended the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) for embarking on the rehabilitation of the ablution blocks in a bid to improve sanitation at the institution.
He said these measures should have been instituted sometime back to ensure that infrastructure at the school does not get badly damaged as it is now.
Mr Simfukwe has since urged people in the province to stop thinking that only education authorities in Lusaka can help to develop their respective areas.
He has since called for a bottom up approach in terms of development instead of waiting for authorities in Lusaka to provide solutions if development was to be attained.
Mr Simfukwe said it was clear from the efforts he had seen at the school that it was possible for the province to address most of its challenges without waiting for the authorities in Lusaka.
Earlier, School Head teacher Emmanuel Chisanga appealed to the government to urgently provide funds for the rehabilitation of Mporokoso Secondary School.
Mr Chisanga lamented that the learning and teaching environment at the institution was not conducive.
He said for the past 12 years, the school has had no proper sanitation due to the broken down sewage system and erratic water supply.
The head teacher also revealed that over 550 pupils, who are in boarding, were sharing 78 mattresses, a situation that has resulted in the majority of pupils sleeping on the floor.
Mporokoso secondary school, which was opened in 1966, has never had any major rehabilitation since then.
ZANIS
Most schools in Zambia are dilapidated. One can imagine how pathetic it is to use this road.Reminds me how traumatic it used to be going back to School (kanele Box 1)in those days.
Cry my beloved Zambia. When will you realize that your untapped prosperity lies in the hands of the the school boys and girls we continue to neglect. No county has ever developed without a critical mass of educated citizens.
But why wait so long? You mean since 1966 no one at all levels of leadership noticed the need for maintenance? The next President might just turn out to be a former pupil of this school.
Why showing us the road leading to the secondary school instead of the dilapidate secondary school to highlight the writer’s story?? To make matters worse, the journalist who wrote and took the photo of the road is unknown at ZNIS??? LT can u get a comment from the inspector of schools?? This is shameful, they are being paid for no job done. Sitting in office without visiting area of responsibility. wake up thats gvt cash you chew. Offer services or resign.. But I know it is HARD to resign cos you loss nothing being paid for nothing.
Mr Simfukwe, this is not realistic, how can you condemn the local and district people instead of the government who has never repaired a school since 1966. we know you need a job to feed your family but no one will fire you even to request for funding for rehabilitation from govenment or constituency development funds. even donor help would have made more sense if was mentioned instead of blaming the community. your government car is checked monthly for oil and breaks but this school has never been checked since 1966. can we blame you if your government car get a break down? let us be realist please.
I attended my grade 9 at this school in 1983…it was pathetic then…
surely we expected to see the dilapideted school not the road, the issue is the school check your facts, it bothers me so much to see schools neglected by our govt. where does our hope lie, is it in the young or on the old selfish politicians
I feel sadden by the Government for not doing any thing to rehabilitate the school, I was a pupil at Mporokoso from 1975 to 1982, at that time we had everything running apart from water on and off, and at times even electricity interaptions. Can Ms. Siliya do something to save our school from collaps.
Politician such as( Gaston Sichilima,) was at that school, he should push the Government, especially Ministry of Education to come to Mporokoso Secondary school’aids.
All old school needs repairs, the problem is that the the govt has left evrything to PTAs which has made the cost of education unaffordable for most parents.
If anything they dont care coz their children go abroad where facilities are better
Mpozzy 2000.was at that school in 1990
