SOME members of the civil society have challenged Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata to unveil his university degree or degrees so that their validity could be scrutinised.
But Mr Sata has said that his qualification is a private property, which no one could force him to show to anyone.
The Committee of Citizens (CC), Forum for Leadership Search (FLS) and Leadership in Development said separately yesterday that Mr Sata should not keep his degree as a secret if he possessed one and challenged him to show the people.
CC executive director Gregory Chifire said there was nothing secretive about one’s qualifications like a degree and Mr Sata should be proud to show it to the public, instead of hiding it.
Following the adoption by the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) of the clause requiring the Republican president to have a degree as a qualification, Mr Sata has claimed that he already has one.
“We challenge Mr Sata to come out and show his degree if at all he has one so that people could know his qualifications,” Mr Chifire said.
FLS executive director Edwin Lifwekelo doubted whether Mr Sata had any degree and challenged him to disclose which university he attended if it was true he had the academic paper.
Mr Lifwekelo said if Mr Sata had a university degree, he would by now have advertised it in some sections of the media.
“Let him tell us where he did the studies and which people he was with or whether it was online. If he has one what is the fear of releasing it so that this issue is put to rest?” he asked.
Mr Sata on Thursday during a programme on Joy FM radio said he was prompted to study for a degree in 2006 when the late Benny Tetamashimba and George Mpombo started talking about it as a qualification for presidential candidates.
Mr Lifwekelo said the requirement of a university degree, as a presidential candidate was not targeted at Mr Sata as it was being perceived by him and his supporters.
He said the requirement was aimed at adding value to the office of Republican president and was not discriminatory.
He said the world had become highly technical hence the need as a country in future to have a Republican president who was not only wise but also in possession of a university degree.
Mr Lifwekelo said it would, however, be the duty of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to scrutinise the qualifications of the aspiring candidates.
Leadership in Development executive director Moses Kalonde challenged Mr Sata to produce his alleged two degrees.
But when reached for a comment, Mr Sata said his degree was a private property and no one could force him to exhibit it to the public unless he wanted to do so.
Mr Sata said calls by some non-governmnental organisations (NGOs) for him to release his degree were proof enough that the NCC had come up with a degree clause to fix him.
Mr Sata said his degree was not for some NGOs or the NCC but a personal property that should be properly guarded.

The new inclusive constitution is very detailed for every citizen. Under it the electoral process requires that aspirants present their nomination papers with the returning officer who in the case of Presidential nominations is the Chief Justice of the country. In doing so, under the proposed law, one of the requirements for the returning officer to accept a presidential candidature will be evidence that the applicant holds a degree from a recognized university.Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate no problem as long as it is transcripted degree with all credit hours verifiable.

All degree plan credit prerequisites being standardized curriculum in a given program a University has set up as basis of conferring a degree its Graduates in given discipline. It’s an international norm to do transcript evaluation. If it’s a History degree, transcripts must be ordered and show the credit hours earned and credited for that degree program per standard requirement. They will then recommend to the Judiciary on credential authenticity.
I have just received copy of the NCC constitution due for parliament. The new constitution being enacted by this seating Parliament is very clear on the constitutionally admissible degree the retaining officer who is the Chief Justice will take. It says the degree should be from a four year recognized University and not Matero or honorary but transcripted. Forensic experts will look at Sata’s degree and evaluate his four degree transcript credits hours.

I have been a Zambian for the last 48 years. Educate me if I am wrong. Do we have a foreign degree accreditation board in Zambia? I know a lot of Zambian, some of them close family and friends who obtained foreign qualifications and never went through the ‘certification’ process. The only foreign qualified Zambians that had a problem were those sent, by the Government for that matter, to Eastern Europe though the Bursaries Committee.

# Dumbwiza, I am not talking about mere verification by the universities for admittance purposes. All Universities do that. I meant an independent credential evaluation organization charged with the task of evaluating foreign qualifications to determine its Zambian equivalent. Here in the USA for example, there is World Education Services that does that. I had to submit my CBU BBA and Nkrumah Diploma for evaluation and and ‘conversion to its USA equivalent credits.
A certificate (degree) is only a stamped paper which doesnt have the grades so there is nothing to hide or be ashamed of if you got bad grades, so just show it to the public.
People are confusing the whole thing here including Sata himself, he keeps calling private property because in his mind you have to show your grades.
Please how many people walk the streets with there school certificats looking for jobs, maybe this is the problem because pepole only think of what grades they got , the certificate is enough it has your name the institution and who ever signed it, the date and so own now that cant be hard to produce

It is unfortunate that this degree thing has come at a time when we feel that it may target one of our own, but to be honest enough and if we can take time to check on the other side of a coin we may find that it is appropriate. Just imagine guys this world is becoming full of technology then consider that there are certain meetings just attended by only heads of states no presidential special aids allowed and the president has to use certain digital adds to present information. President Obama or Brown would not consider our presidents’ level of education at all. Wake up guys we should not just think of a president in a zambian context but look at a wider picture.

It appears we are challenging academic excellency by belittling a degree which is an award confered to a scholar to show and attest that a candidate has satisfied a faculty of his/her completing a course of study.Needless to say what the NCC have done is to uplift the standard of that office by including that a holder or aspiring candidate to that office should be not less than 35 years, born in Zambia/or a born citizen and a holder of a four year university degree.however,the timing of this may appear to target certain individuals with a sordid view of barring them from contesting in the coming elections.There is an adage that says “laws are supposed to be for the good of mankind and not against man” if we can debate and arrive at a conclusion to ascertain if this law is indeed good…

This DEGREE ISSUE is a waste of time and the country has already wasted a lot of time debating an issue that will not improve the lives of ordinary Zambians. This has been typical of our young nation where we direct energies on non-issues. Surely it must be up to each political party to decide who must lead them. In my view, a leader is one that brings people together and you do not need a degree to do that. A person that is divisive or elitist can not be a leader of a modern nation. However we are giving such people the audacity of bringing their clauses in the national constitution. This is a big insult to ordinary Zambians who paid for our sub-standard degrees with their sweat.
