Sex reports during trials regrettable – MDP official

Share

Microbicide Development Programme (MDP), Mazabuka Community Liason Officer, Kennedy Mundia has described as unfortunate claims by a Microbicide participant that women were subjected to having sex during trials.

Mr Mundia said during a heated District Development Coordinating Committee ( D.D.C.C ) meeting chaired by district commissioner, Tyson Hamaamba that the claims are false and meant to tarnish the image of the organisation.

Ms. Annety Maluma, 37 of Nakambala township, testified before the District Commissioner, Hamaamba that a named MDP would phone her and give the phone to an opposite sex to arrange for a sex encounter.

Ms. Maluma told the meeting she was ready to pin point the man and officer from MDP who used to telephone her.

But Mundia wondered why Ms Maluma did not raise the concerns with his office when such things were happening.

He told the meeting he would not say much because the participant stopped visiting MDP in 2008.

All participants were married and aged above 18 as a condition to be enrolled.

Management at Microbicide Development Programme (MDP) in Mazabuka has dismissed claims by the University of Zambia Biomedical Research ethics committee that none of the women contracted HIV and AIDs during the failed clinical trials.

MDP Project Coordinator, Rose Kasonde said when she presented the results for the failed clinical trials during a district development coordinating committee chaired by district commissioner, Tyson Hamaamba that 46 women contracted the virus contrary to claims by the ethics committee.

The University of Zambia Biomedical Research Ethics Committee during a press briefing in Lusaka said there was no cause to believe that the 46 women out of the 1,332 were infected as a result of their participation in the trials.

Dr Kasonde explained that the 46 contracted the virus at different levels.

She was responding to a question by Chief Mwanachingwala who wanted to know whether or not some women contracted HIV during the failed trials.

Chief Mwanachingwala commended MDP management for clearing his name because the ethics committee in their story that appeared in the Post edition of 11 January,2010 suggested that none of the women contracted HIV during the trials.

Last week, Chief Mwanachingwala said in a statement to ZANIS in Mazabuka, five doctors from the University who visited him at the palace pleaded with him not to attack MDP in the press.

He said the doctors failed to convince him on the outcome of the failed clinical trials but was shocked to learn that they misinformed the nation on the number of people that contracted the virus.

  1. Why didn’t the mathaf**ckers do the trails on themselves, MMD women who dance for RB @ the airport, women prisoners with life sentence or those condemed to death or all those women attending the NCC cuz these can be easily monitered & are desperate for anythin even fellation.I smell HIV pu*sy ! The human rights should hook up with the issue why they only enrolled poor rural women for the sh*t instead suckerz like Dollas,Veraz,Muareen,Edith,Mampi & the like.

  2. 991, every person’s life is very precious. This is regardless of which ills you think they deserve to have. may God change you!

  3. This is very serious and hopefully these Zambian NGO’s were not paid to cover the truth, please do not sell our country for useless trials. Thye truth shall be known.

  4. What a shame! You don’t do medical trials on human beings unless the experiment has passed stringent medical testing and is regarded safe. I do not support the use of animals for clinical tests but that is the only alternative we have. Why didn’t they use monkeys for clinical tests before subjecting them to humans?

  5. Conducting the trials on married women , uh?…. Doesn’t make sense to me . Something’s not right here.
……L T , why do you prevent us from using the word s e.x when you yourselves are free to use it?

  6. I dont understand why they would do such an evil thing on innocent women. Those doctors should carry the experiment on themselves, if they succeed, they can do on other pipo. Why were they so scared to do the trial on themselves before murdering those 46 women with AIDS. This is so annoying….

  7. This is Zamabia, the real Africa. A land of crocodiles, vernomous snakes, lions and micro biological research that go bust. I can tell u this issue will die a natural death just like the numerous cases of Chinese arrested on the copperbelt peddling in KCM, MOPANI stolen copper. The cases never see day light in court. This case soon to be hushed up and as usual we Zambians will forget about it. What a blessed humanity species we are. God bless Zambia.

  8. Finger-pointing and counter accuzationz will not take anybody anywhere. Let the Ministry of Health issue a sincere comprehensive statement on the matter and thoze found wanting reprimanded, and then chart a way forward. Maybe, just maybe, Annety Maluma thought the idea of s.e.x waz part of the trial process?

  9. This MDP should just compensate the women. And they should tell us exactly the terms and conditions under which these women were subjected to. We have no idea what they were told at the beginning of these trials. And I am surprised that the Ministry Of Health has been strangely quiet about the whole episode

  10. Am sorry for Zambian Jonalisim sector, Pipo like Chibulu need to go to skool. Before you wirte on something you need to gather more background information and inform us accordingly. Now we look like fools who dont know wat is going on in the world. Someone jst send me a website that i was looking at and guess wat Zambia is bt a small stone in a big river, others countries are doing this and wat i have read is different from wat i have gotten from our newspapers WHY??? Google global campaign for microbicide (http://www.global-campaign.org/) pipo read and learn then we attack these so called researchers in mazabuka.

  11. Gaalo thank you for the insight! I JUST LOOKED AT THE WEBSITE MYSELF ZANIS CAN YOU PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU GIVE YOUR SIDE OF THINGS! TO ME IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE JST GETTING ON THE NEGATIVE ARE THERE NO POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT THIS TRIAL? TELL US ABOUT IT IN FULL> AND IT LOOKS LIKE YOU STAY IN MAZABUKA WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER WOMEN WHO ALSO WERE GOING THERE THE THOUSANDS WHAT ARE THEY SAYING TELL US!

  12. God says “tho shall not kill”. thats indirect killing, the women may not have agreed if they were advised correctly. shame!shame!

  13. Sorry guys but I think we have just been ill-informed about this issue. Henry Chibulu has got hidden agendas thats the reason why he is frequently seen having dark corner meetings with Chief Mwanachingwala, another hinderance to development.
    We need human clinical trials!
