Chief Bright Nalubamba

THE Luapula Chiefs Council has warned that it will not tolerate Senior Chief Bright Nalubamba’s continued attacks on former President Frederick Chiluba.

Council chairman Chief Chisunka of the Ushi of Luapula said in an interview yesterday that Chief Nalubamba is not a judge to convict Dr Chiluba in the press.

He was reacting to Chief Nalubamba’s reported remarks that Dr Chiluba allegedly squandered public resources and mismanaged the country.

“Let Chief Nalubamba not judge Dr Chiluba. He should stop talking about him because we will react. We are not happy with his comments on Dr Chiluba.

“If he is a judge, let him go ahead and sue Dr Chiluba. He should know that Dr Chiluba comes from people…we are the fathers of Dr Chiluba and we will, therefore, not tolerate this,” he said.

Chief Chisunka said Dr Chiluba was acquitted of corruption charges and that Chief Nalubamba should respect the court’s verdict.

He warned that chiefs in Luapula will differ with Chief Nalubamba should he continue attacking the former head of state.

“We chiefs in Luapula Province respect our subjects and don’t exchange words in public,” he said.
Chief Chisunka urged traditional leaders to be non-partisan and stop threatening their subjects who do not share their political views.

He said chiefs should be there to guide and advise politicians.

“We are supposed to work with whoever is in government. We are expected to hear from them and tell them what we want,” he said.

He appealed to traditional leaders to remain neutral.

Chief Chisunka said traditional leaders should not influence their subjects to support their preferred political parties.

  1. The fierst question is which Chiefs Council is Chief Chisunka representing? I come from royal families both from my father’s and mother’s sidesand I can assure all that there is no such thing in Luapula as the Chiefs Council because unlike the Bemba’s of Nothern Province, Luapula Chiefs reign over diverse tribes

  2. Ba Chisunka bakuchekelankoni kang´ono? Mukazikamba ngati you are a beneficialy from the Zamtrup account. Are you also speaking on behalf of Cheif Mwata Kazembe?

  3. Shut up Chisunka! You have no issues. Dont mis represent the people of Luapula. They dont support thieves. What kind of Chief are you who cant make a sound judgement or assesement to see that Chiluba’s aquital was doctored? Chibula brought poverty to Luapula hencde he must be condemed in Luapula and zambia as a whole.

  4. Ila chief pledges MMD support

CHIEF Mungaila of the Ila people of Namwala District in Southern Province has pledged to continue supporting the ruling MMD and the Government because it has initiated a number of development projects in Namwala.

Chief Mungaila said the MMD and the Government deserved praise for implementing development projects such as roads, school infrastructure, health centres and other projects.

  5. He said the ruling party had delivered on some of its promises to the people in the district.

Chief Mungaila cited the Namwala Modern Basic and Niko Technical Girls High schools, whose construction works had reached advanced stages.

The traditional leader also cited the Maala and Choma-Namwala roads as some of the projects the ruling party and the Government should be praised for.

He said it was in this regard that he would offer unwavering support to the current Government to continue with the delivery of development programmes in the district.

  6. “There is no one who can stand today and say that the MMD Government has done nothing in the district.

‘‘We have seen a lot of development in terms of school infrastructure and health centres being constructed and other projects being implemented,”

  7. When PF take over government, we shall abolish the rank of chiefs, in side PF sources revealed. The treatment given to chiefs during colonialism was said to be prefered unlike making these chiefs supper humans.

  8. In the first instance, what prompted His Highness Chief Bright Nalubamba to abundon His noble task of counselling His people in times of sorrow? The Chief is expected to talk less but offer words of wisdom to his subjects and all strangers and visitors who stray into His Chiefdom. The sad this is that Chief Nalubamba has fallen prey to corruption and bribery on which he thrives ever since he was placed on HH’s pay role. When Harry Nkumbula (an Ila) died, the whole country mourned him gracefully despite the late short-comings in the struggle of independence. Apparently, we have more than 100 Chiefs in Zambia, but it is curious that Nalubamba has singly refused to acknowledge the plight of the people of Luapula at the demise of their own son.
