FORMER Minister of Finance Ng’andu Magande was part of the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) national executive committee (NEC) that received and endorsed petitions from provincial committees that President Banda be sole candidate at the ruling party’s national convention.

MMD national chairman Michael Mabenga said this in Lusaka yesterday in reaction to Mr Magande’s claim that holding the party national convention would be a waste of time if President Banda has already been declared the party’s Republican presidential candidate.

Mr Mabenga said in an interview that Mr Magande should also know that the convention is not only about presidential elections but also for discussing how best the party can progress.

He said there are a number of issues that are discussed at national party conventions apart from the presidential elections.

Mr Mabenga said that at the convention the party receives reports from various committees and delegates are informed about the party’s performance nationwide.

He said for instance, Mr Magande, as the chairman of the committee on finance, is expected to give a report on how his committee is performing.

“When it comes to elections, all positions will be contested. Not only the presidential position. I understand Mr Magande because he has only attended the convention once,” Mr Mabenga said.

Mr Magande was quoted as having said: “… why would anybody go to the convention if they have already decided he (President Banda) will be the candidate?”

  1. This man was found guilty of misusing CDF funds, was accordingly fired by Mwanawasa,RB gave him a job as deputy Minister,so he will do anything to support RB’s sole candidature at the convention, otherwise he will be on the streets like any jobless zambian,in the unlikely event that mmd wins,he will be a full cabinet minister and all will be history, thank God, we are seeing the last of mmd lunacy

  2. Mabenga you are a lier, no wonder you mr CDF.Magande has never support RB and is very consistent on that.Shame on you MMD lier and we in the disapora can see through ur desperation.VIVA pact from deuschland

  3. #1,2,and 3-Fello Zambians, You are missing the point. Mabenga was not found guilty, but the court recomended that the police should investigate the matter. The police have done so and have not found Mabenga with a case.So why are u playing the role of the judge by finding Mabenga guilty?? Magande should be serious in his actions if any serious Zambian is to respect him.At the time he was close to Mazoka He betrayed Mazoka in exchange for job as minister of finance and became very arrogant. If the great people-founder members of this Party MMD have fpund RB suitable to unite Zambians why should this Magande son of the D*g, C*t,be giving the party he claims to belong problems.Prof Clive Chilwa has gone go to the pact if you want-I mean be principled,If you can t agree with the leadership leave

  4. #1,2,3-Be assured that from the look of things MMD will be there beyond 2011 as the party in Power.Look when Chiluba said vote for Sata where were you and what was your position on the matter. Today he feels RB is the Man your position has sharply changed and you think us serious seeing zambians are seeing this lack of HONESTY in all this.Wait for 2011 Luapula back to the Ford thank you to the Mwata,CB back to the power force, time will tell

  5. Magande is a very, very arrogant man by nature and is not presidential material. Apart from his hideous accent, his mouth is just too big and loud. He is indisciplined and needs to be punished. Simply because copper prices went up coinciding with his term as Finance minister should not make him waste his time dreaming that he will be president of MMD and Zambia. We have had much better Finance ministers in the past than him like the late RDS Penza, EG Kasonde, Gibson Chigaga (MTSRIP) etc. Let him take back his arrogance to the UPND.

  6. For one, I would rather have Magande as president than a character that spends most of his time in the air garavanting aimlessly from one destination to another and when he is on the ground, and rarely so, he is busy “Kayopering”. Banda must be the most all round useless president in Africa and I can understand Magande’s point of view because if the NEC has already decided Banda is their candidate, regardless of whether he is elected at the MMD Convention or not, then what is the need of holding this convention? We are not oblivious to the fact that the zenith of these conventions is the election of the party president, and if you elect a toothless one, it does not make any sense at all going to the convention in the first place, it’s illogical.

  7. Politics yapa Zed bore me to death
Most of the ministers and members of any party are cowards and cannot vote to put away any leader that is not capable to doing the job. They are only interested in keeping their jobs and not fighting for the future of the young generation and our country in general. We need pipo like Melcom X who were not afraid to speak out the truth and were not scared to die for that.
If we continue at this parse, i’m afraid our country is heading for decline….

  8. Magande has a point, if RB is sole candidate then the convention will achieve very little, albeit elections for lower ranks. We know how these conventions operate. They are used to sort out all those perceived to be against the president. Sata and FTJ did that to force out Mikyanda, C Tembo, Nawakwi and all those who opposed the 3rd Term
