Lusaka councils urged to quickly allocate land for housing schemes

Share

Councils in Lusaka province have been urged to speed up the allocation of land for government to built housing units for civil servants.

Government will build 100 houses in each of the 72 districts in the country to alleviate the shortage of accommodation faced by civil servants in districts.

Lusaka Province minister Charles Shawa said councils in the province should quickly provide land in their respective areas so that construction of houses can begin as soon as possible.

Mr. Shawa was speaking in Kafue yesterday when he addressed heads of government department and parastatal organizations.

He said government is aware of the accommodation problems many civil servants are facing hence the decision to embark on the construction of houses in each district.

Mr. Shawa also advised civil servants to acquire plots and build houses where they can settle after retiring from employment.

And Mr. Shawa said in Kafue was at the centre of its development agenda.
He said the town is recovering from the economic decline it suffered in the last few years because of the investments taking place in the district.
He cited the establishment of the Steel Plant which has so far employed about 500 local people.

Other investments include Alliance Ginnery, lodges and hotels which the minister said have brightened the economic future of the district.

Earlier at the same function, Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Stephen Bwalya advised civil servants to remain non partisan and serve the government of the day diligently.

  1. Strange! This come soon after my comment on Dora! Meanwhile Dora says the banks should give loans to the teachers! Charles says the council should provide land quickly!

  2. This sounds Good Move. But why should Land be a problem when money is available and it’s the BOMA and its People faced with such problems. Please Give Land is still plenty in Zambia. Do not politicize**===:):))

  3. What happened to Zambia National Housing Trust Bond which was meant to build houses in all provinces and land and resources were allocated?

  4. Charles, land agency for Lusaka and other councils was revoked by your govnt. How are they going to find land. Be serious and channel your request to ministry of lands.

  6. 1.How big will these houses be/ will the size of a house depend on which district it is in?
2.Will there be fairness in who will be accomodated in these houses?
3.Zambians will want to know the real cost from start to finish of constructing these houses to have confidence that money has not been diverted to selfish individual ventures.
4.We hope once built, these houses will not be forgotten and that they will be repaired and maintained as and when necessary.
GOD BLESS ZAMBIA AND MAY HE GIVE WISDOM TO THOSE GOVERNING ZAMBIA.**==**==

  7. Just 100 houses.? My foot! talk should be to build then of thousands or a million houses and not 100 houses. What we needs is to relocate everyone in misisi and chawama compounds etc and then rebuild these compounds with tens of thousands of houses.

  8. Here is how I would work it out. There are 11 million people in Zambia. On average 8 people would live in 1 house (according to Zambia fertility stats). That comes to just under 1.5 million 7 bed (not bed rooms!)houses. Initially, there should be at least 500,000 houses already there occupied by the formally employed sector. That leaves a shortfall of 1 million houses. K70m per house would mean that the government must raise K500 billion. This is the maximum amount of money that is needed to give every Zambian decent accomodation and it is NOT beyond our capability. Come on Zambia, let’s do it!

  9. So roughly about 73 x 100, i.e 7300 houses will be built. Suppose the average cost of building one house is K100 million, this means that 7300 x K100,000,000, i.e K730 Billion will be needed. This is quite a lot of money.:-?:o
