TIZ reacts to Richard Sakala’s “corruption fight is a myth”

Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) is saddened by former Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations to former President Chiluba, Richard Sakala’s assertion that the campaign against corruption in Zambia is a myth.

TIZ president Reuben Lifuka described the sentiments by Mr. Sakala as disappointing especially that they were coming from a man who had held a very senior position in Dr. Chiluba’s administration.

Mr. Lifuka alleged that Mr. Sakala’s sentiments were not made in good faith and were only meant to justify the wrong things he did when he was the Special Assistant to the former president.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that the campaign against corruption, as orchestrated by the late President Dr. Levy Mwanawasa, helped to lessen cases of corruption in the country.

Mr. Lifuka said the late Dr Mwanawasa was very emphatic in fighting corruption and urged the government of President Rupiah Banda to adopt some of the strategies the late president initiated in curbing the vice.

The TIZ president said although the country has not reached its peak in fighting the vice, people’s attitude against the fight on corruption has changed dramatically since the campaign was launched.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lifuka has called on members of the public to be vigilant and play an active role in raising alarm if the country was to effectively combat the scourge.

He has also urged President Banda to act firmly but fairly on people including those in his cabinet who may be suspected of corruption.

Mr. Lifuka’s comments come in the wake of assertions by Mr. Sakala that the campaign against corruption in Zambia was nonexistent and was only coined by some individuals with personal vendettas aimed at fixing certain individuals.

  1. Dont answer this criminal. He is disgraced, and has stoop down low. He’s only bitter he got caught stealing. With his boss, these guys run criminal gangs from state house!

  2. The time he spent in prison was not enough. He should have been locked up for at least ten years. Why are these corrupt jailbirds so vocal now. Such corrupt people do not deserve any support.

  3. He was jailed for theft, spend his time in jail. He is an ex-convict. what else does he want. Just that Kafupi was ficticiously aquitted does not give him the guts to come out and attack everybody. This man cant rehabilitate his name this way. U see countrymen what “aquitting” Chiluba after being caught pants down stealing has done. Thieves regrouping.

  4. Richard Sakala may not have been innocent, but what he said about Levy’s corription fight is true. How do you explain the dealings of Mutembo-his huge allowances, the Zambian Airways/DBZ issue, mathani’s manouvres regarding govt contracts with Finance bank, proffessional insurance and remember that someone close to state house was mentioned in the Dora Siliya’s inquery on the Zamtel and the NAC saga. What of the Kapoko, Simon miti and indeed the ephraim mateyo scandals. And the Masebo gate hearse scandal! These are pipo who were very close to Mwanawasa and its inconcievable to think he didnt have an idea of what was happening.

Even directly to him, the term ‘family tree’ came to prominence becase of his corrupt way of awarding positions not on merit but based on his relationship.

  5. When Sakala was resident in Chimbokaila, apparently a prison top dog was busy roping him and when he came out, he was seen limping uncontrolably because of the damage done to his backside. If he thinks he can marry this top dog sweetheart of his, he is mistaken because the NCC is outlawing same s.e.x. marriage. This behaviour has also gone to his head, he thinks the fight against corruption is a myth, maybe he needs to go back to jail to link up with his top dog to ravage his backside big time.
