The Great Debate: Mbesuma

Collins Mbesuma

What will happen to Collins Mbesuma at the end of this season?

It seems it was another false dawn for the 25-year-old striker whose career has been an antithesis ever since he left Kaizer Chiefs for Europe in 2005 before returning from that misadventure last year.

Moreover, he failed to even kick a ball in all of Zambia’s four matches at the Africa cup in Angola before being stranded in Luanda after the tournament on his way back to his South African club Moroka Swallows.

Now Swallows coach Rainer Zobel has hinted this might be Mbesuma first and last season at the club under his tenure.

“At the moment he is not in my plans as other players in his position are doing well. We have been using more youngsters in the team recently and they have been showing high discipline and working hard at training,” the German-born coach told Kickoff in an interview.

“This must apply to him; he (Mbesuma) must give me more at training, like everybody does because all my players are equal.

“We have changed our system a bit and Mbesuma must learn that he has to run and pick up the ball rather than wait to get the ball upfront.”

Mbesuma has not played a single match for Swallows since returning from Angola.

  1. Exactly the problem with Zambian players- the mediocrity, waiting to be fed the ball and will not fight for it; and when they get it, do such a poor shabby job at it.
Look at any clips- where the zambians concede any goal- and watch what individual defenders were doing..and you shall see you there’s a complete overhaul necessary- if it is possible at all….

  2. Ok, to begin with LT, two corrections to your story are in order. First, this is not a great debate. Secondly, Mbesuma is NOT, and I repeat Mbesuma is NOT 25 years old. This Man is 40 years old and past his glory days. Now to answer your question, what will happen to him? Well, that is a no brainer . What will happen to him is what has basically happend to all ageing players. Let him retire and go back to Luanshya and maybe work as a lasher or gate security guard in the new LCM mines the Chinese are rehabilitating. He can then have all the compound women he wants and drink all the shakers he wants and nobody, nobody will ever bother him and put him in the paper. FINITO!!!!!

  3. discussing about that fotini or 14 no ways. i serve by breath. :o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o he is so %-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-( hell no :-t:-t:-t:-t:-t

  4. discussing about that fotini or 14 no ways. i save by breath. :o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o he is so %-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-(%-( hell no :-t:-t:-t:-t:-t

  5. This is a chap who obviously doesn’t know the meaning of opportunity. He is not even worthy talking about let him end as a pauper.

  6. The great debate, more like the great mistake. Mbesuma lacks the discipline to play at a high level. He is even lucky he has had all these chances. I say if loves his drink and t bones, let him focus on that, he might have better luck in that department.
But in all seriousness, I think Faz needs to have a department that consults these players. Most teams in the NBA, NFL advice and consult young new players about all kinds of topics like managing money etc. I mean what do we expect when a kaponya is thrusted with a lot of money = he will behave like Mbesuma.

  7. LT, you just like Mbesuma are in the wrong field. How can you call this great debate? Please, find something better to waste your time on. You are embarassing Zambian journalism

  8. # 2 you’re so right on his age, most of our players lie on their ages. his main problem is not peculiar to zambian players even gaza and george best had same issues. the only difference zambia and the rest of the world is our players lack drive or ambitious dreams, to them going to play in Mongolia or Mauritius is making it.

  9. Mbesuma is not debatable. tHe whole thing is up to him to see what his priorities are.We know that he has made his money and does not care much about what happens . What he should know is that he has people who support himand he should respect that. His father Mr Francis Kajiya was a good and discplined player who he should emulate. Ise tikamba jabe.

  10. Lessons must be drawn from Mbesuma`s trepidation.Questions should be asked as to why the once celebrated prolific striker emerging from Zambia is currently considered a reject .Former Kaiser Chiefs coach Ted Dimitru advised againts thrusting Mbesuma into the EPL before maturing as a player. That fatal error in judgement is what has been Mbesuma`s downfall.

  11. #19 right on. just to add on. did anyone consider the psychological component to the transition from south africa to the english league? we looking at lifestyle changes, social support, not to mention the different playing styles in the leagues.
This man went to england psychologically unprepared and unfortunately failed to adjust and adapt.
The end result of maladjustment is depression. and when you are depressed one of the coping strategies you use is to eat for comfort, which translates to weight gain and low energy levels, low self esteem, guilt , lack of concentration, poor sleep and poor performance…. more depression, more overeating, more weight and hence a vicious cycle
i wish people would stop bashing this boy for being sick. it was not his choice. what he needs is proper…

  12. psychological care. depression like any other illness deserves treatment and understanding from soceity and not stigmatisation. and if a diagnosis is not made someone goes without treatment, suffering unnnecessarily and God forbid with fatal outcomes. remember that goalkeeper from somewhere in europe who recently commited suicide because of his depression? people around him were aware that he had some issues but no one to act.

  13. Let all people who love football speak to assist this person. He has immense talent and negativity wont assist anybody.35 goals mean alot.He can change as there is room.

  14. I think wat zambian players lack is discpline.no matter wat he does it still reflects on the entire nation but he doesnt realize that.i believe mbesuma has potential but wat he lacks is discpline.he needs strict guidance.if i had a way,i would send him to Sir Alex Fergusson to teach him how to be a proffesional.i just hope he wont waste his career like emmanuel zulu.

  15. Mbesuma should have stayed at Kaizer Chiefs. He will never have such an opportunity again. Again his problem is failure to handle his riches. He should just go back to Zambian and drink the chibuku he always wants to drink when he has to go back to camp.

  16. this man went for trials to france with jacob at first,,,look where jacob is and where he is…he is no formal education and nothing gets into his thick skull..no matter how much loving and prroper councel is given to him,,this are street boys..i even doubt he has all those monies hee has been paid over the years,,:((

  17. # 1 you ar full of crap, dont confuse Mbesumas probs with the rest of ur players,Zambia is one of the strongest teams on the continent as shown @ the just ended CAN.Negativity will not build us,no wonder u ar living in the diaspora,if u didnt mek it here u wont mek it there with that type of mentality (no disrespect to the rest of my bros & sistaz in the diaspora)

  21. I would have loved and I still do that Mbesuma can make a lot of money by playing to his full pontential he showed when he was at Roan Utd and Power on loan. His conduct has been a disgrace. Something or everything is wrong with our young boy. Nothing seems to work right for him what a pity. We shall pray hard so that he redeems self. It’s not too late for him but the chance and tym is now.

  22. Walai #30 uli mbwa sana ayi? u say u wish u were neva born a zambian i say u ar an ***** living in a fools paradise,u say u ar doin yr masters well i just happen to be doin my last level in cima,av got a good job i own 4 cars,av built a big hse in mitengo so u see am making it big ryt here in Z unlike u ***** who thinks to mek it big 1 has to go abroad.Economic refugee…

  23. african child ulishani iwe? nalikutemwa sana wawumfwa? mwaaah! chi kiss! any one can own a car bane. pa uk ama motoka ku cheaper, you can buy cars for 100 pounds only for you info mune. since when did cars become a sign of wealth? typical zambian thinking iyo haha, yaba.tell me more abut your good job. if are earning more than me (i.e. above 6000 pounds per month, ninshi bane i will respect you wawumfwa?) landa tumfwe. ati economic refugee, mune i came pa Uk nempiya, i am married to a woman from here not to use her as most of zambians with your thinking would do, just my wifes wealth is estimated at a millions pounds mune i.e assets etc, and she cannot compare to my background, if i wanted mune i would be in zambia working under one of my families business i.e. my parents, or living off one
