Catholic priest speaks out on extramarital affairs

Share

A ROMAN Catholic Church priest in Chipata has said it is not in order for a man married to two women or those publicly known to have extramarital affairs to receive the Holy Eucharist.

St Atanazio Parish priest, Richard Chiyanjano said in an interview yesterday that the church doctrine only permitted a man in a monogamous relationship to take the Holy Eucharist.

“The Holy Eucharist, as far as I am concerned, is not allowed to be eaten by a man who is married to more than one wife or who has a known relationship or children outside marriage, the church doctrine does not allow that,” Father Chiyanjano, who is also Caritas Chipata director, said.

Fr Chiyanjano added: “What I know is that if a man is married to two wives, the first wife is free to eat the Holy Eucharist but the other one, including the man, are not allowed to eat it.”

Last Friday, Zambia Episcopal Conference president, George Lungu, when asked why Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata had not been stopped from receiving the Holy Eucharist despite allegedly siring two children outside his marriage, refused to comment on the matter, saying the issue should be addressed by Mr Sata’s parish.

Meanwhile, Lusaka lawyer Keith Mukata said yesterday that Mr Sata’s case of alleged financial misconduct involving K1.2 billion was prosecutable because it was stopped at administrative level and the decision could be reviewed.

He said a criminal matter did not go stale at administrative level, so the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)’s office still had the power to re-open the case if need be.

Mr Mukata said he was not sure about the facts backing the decision not to prosecute Mr Sata, but the fact that it was a criminal matter and was not prosecuted made it possible for re-opening in a court of law.

He said criminal cases were better disposed of in the courts of law.
Mr Mukata said the issue of whether the case would proceed in court or not was another subject.

“Well, honestly speaking, this is an actionable case. In my opinion, a criminal case does not go stale as long as a prima facie case was found, this is reasonable enough to allow him to be prosecuted up to the Supreme Court level,” he said.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said recently that it probed Mr Sata in 1992 for alleged financial misconduct involving K1.2 billion when he served as minister of Local Government and Housing.

The commission said Mr Sata had directed his officers to deposit the funds in a special 45 days investment account at Standard Chartered Bank, contrary to financial regulation number 10 of 1992.

And Lusaka Province MMD chairperson, William Banda has asked the police and ACC to investigate where the PF leader obtained the US$27,000 which he was dispossessed by South African authorities.

Mr Banda said in Luangwa yesterday the Government should not take lightly the serious allegations against the opposition leader, as the amount involved was huge.

Luangwa Member of Parliament, Charles Shawa urged the residents to rally behind President Banda in next year’s tripartite elections because he was the only credible leader .

  2. Sata should have just kept quiet about FTJ.

They say “dont throw stones when you live in a glass house”.

Now PF supporters are so dissapointed.

They thought Sata was the second comming of chirst.

  3. Never trust political leaders.

They will say what ever it takes to convince you they love and care for you, only to betray you once they get into office.

Ask Dr. Kaseba how she has been betrayed by her own husband not once but twice!

If she cant trust him how can we trust him?

I am so dismayed by this!

  4. Ba Father Richard Chiyanjano extramarital affairs is not the church’s to judge. It is a secret thing and private affair and for you to comment on it is not fair. Does this priest know how much fornication, adultery, stealing, and many more cases exist in his parish? Probably he should just giving ulukalasitiya to his flock because he will never know what the people he is giving it to did last night. The priest must know that one’s sinning is between that man and his God. Just because Chiluba says so, does not mean it is so. Does this man know how many times Chiluba has been to the Prophet in Nigeria? Does the bible allow for one to leave his wife for another woman? Does the bible allow for a man to steal another man’s wife? No. So, ba Father mutekanye. Mwalasebana. We know what you do…

  5. Bishops were molesting kids and continued ukulya umukate no mwangashi. So, please ba Father, play it cool or you will soon embarrass yourself. Look at Ba Milingo your holy one. What happened?

  6. Lusaka lawyer Keith Mukata I’M DIRECTING YOU TO OPEN THE FTJ THIEVING CASE WHICH WAS A WRONG HUMAN INDUCED AQUITTAL.

  7. Please don’t insult father chiyanjano, just comment according to the story You should mind your language its not all the fathers. Think twice before you talk.

  8. Bashi mapepo naimwe, If it’s consential between two, three or even more adults, who gives it a middle finger? Utwaiche tuntu muchita kuma t a k o ebwafya!?Those are the cases you need to be answering. Atase! Nansoni muliye[-x

  9. We shall leave the judgement on Mr Sata’s numerous extra-marital affairs to the lord for we all have to answer to him. The truth of the matter is that he is an unsuitable candidate for political office for various other reasons like his uncouth & un-civilised manner, his lack of respect for people, vulgar language, abusive behaviour, tribalistic instincts, lack of respect for procedure and process, lack of an analytical mind, amateur foreign policy view-point(off-tangent to be precise),incessant bullying & harassment of colleagues and juniors, lack of respect for academicians or school itself, over-inflated ego, the list is endless including a bad heart that landed him in S.A last time the taiwanese wanted their money back & failure to discipline his kids who were regular Castro followers

  10. #5 Kalos2020, do you understand what you read? It is important that you do before you comment on issues. Read again ” “The Holy Eucharist, as far as I am concerned, is not allowed to be eaten by a man who is married to more than one wife or who HAS A KNOWN RELATIONSHIP OR CHILDREN outside marriage, the church doctrine does not allow that,” Father Chiyanjano, who is also Caritas Chipata director, said”. Sata’s escapades are publicly known (if not before Chiluba’s statement, then at least now), and certainly it was known for years by none other than the chief administrator of the Holy Eucharist, so called “Archbishop” Telesphore.

  11. Again the Catholics themselves have not been immune to such allegations over sexual misbehavior and the Pope is on record apologising to victims of those sexually abused by some too “active” prelates, some of whom have been accused of homosexuality.
Why the fuss about Mr Sata?

Well he is a national leader seeking to take over the reigns of power at the highest order and the sooner he publicly apologises to all, the better the chances of him getting on the track of his national agenda.

  12. The Catholics are not doing him a favour either by trying to mask him from the shame and fall from grace after the revelations.

The questions are still begging for the Catholic fraternity to either publicly condemn him or defend and praise him for what he has done.

Or do we conclude that for some Catholic priests there is too much to hide that the moment they condemn Mr Sata, someone from their past will spill the beans about children they sired and hid from society just to gain acceptance in the eyes of the public and to be able to sway in the robes and gowns of the Church as they drink wine from the chalices of copper and break the holy Eucharist bread?

  13. No country in contemperary world can give its highest office in the land to a publicly declared s-e-x-u-a-l predator.Sata must be turned into a s-e-x-u-a-l rehabilitation and undergo all the therapy then get the certification to be reintegreted in public life under radar. In the USA as a s-e-x offender, he would be carrying a life time mark to his name body and domicile. He would be reporting himself to the police every week and foreifeit all public benefits such high profile jobs. How do we shove a s-e-x-u-a-l predator on plot one then expect him to confer with world dignitaries?

  14. I think Fr Chiyanjano should have followed suite by keeping quiet he is talking about something he is not sure about. That is why bishop Lungu kept quiet. Unless may be he has been misquoted by the writer or the context in which he was answering the question. The thing is Sata is not married to that woman why should he be refused to partake the eucharist. What happened is that Sata committed a sin yes of which if he confessed his sins then his sins have been forgiven. And he can recieve the eucharist. Unless sata was married to this woman and its offical that his married if its a girlfriend he can still recieve the eucharit. Wh knows what happens between him and her and between him and the parish priest for confession. the best person to answer the question is the parish priest and curate.
