The Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) has disclosed that this year’s Kuomboka Ceremony of the Lozi people will take place on the 17th of April.

Speaking in an interview in Mongu today, Acting Ngambela Litia Walubita confirmed the development and urged the public to come in large numbers as they put on their traditional attires to add to the colourful event.

The Acting Ngambela added that preparations towards the ceremony have reached advanced stages to ensure that people enjoy the ceremony.

But Acting Ngambela further urged people driving from outside Mongu District and using Mongu/Lusaka road to be mindful when they reach at Tata yoyo saying the road is in a bad state.

The Acting Ngambel also urged people coming for the ceremony to respect the tradition rules observed during the ceremony in order to have a peaceful ceremony.

Kuomboka Ceremony is an annual ceremony where the Lozi ascend from the lower land to the upper lands as the Barotse plains are flooded.

  1. Kuomboka ki kuzwa mwamezi! That’s what I was taught in Grade 5 during Zambian Language class, which was compulsory those days. As a result, I am fluent in many languages, Lozi and French included. It would be great to re-introduce Zambian Languages in schools for pupils and other European Languages as well. Zambian pupils, these days, cannot even read or write the one language they are taught in. I learnt English, French, Lozi and Tonga all at school in Zambia. At home I learnt Bemba, Chewa-Nyanga, etc, it is so amazing when I look back. I am fluent (speaking, reading and writing) in all these languages and they have served me well both at home and in the diaspora!

  2. #2 Well spoken, my wo/man. Languages are an important vehicle for advancement. I hope the MMD will not politicize this cultural event. We need kozo there, not imaginary success stories and empty promises.

  3. There is no need for Lusaka residents to travel to Mongu this year. We are watching Kuomboka live on our streets!! Compliments of RB

  4. #4 nice sense of humour, your name reminds me about the song we used to sing in Lusaka every time we met a Gumu Gumu when we were boys. Do kids still sing that song?

  10. Iwe ka #10, what is so special about riding ichi boat for 12 hours and wearing that ancient british attire.I would rather be drinking blood because at the end of it you eat the meat. Or kuyafye mukutamba ifinyau ku Likumbi lya mize.

  11. Iwe ka#15 what is wrong with you? You are a typical Bemba tribalist. Even if you don’t attend we won’t miss you because you chaps are thieves. Look at the people who are facing corruption charges. We mbwa we. Achiii lineneke. Aluyeni kwa haye luyo tapisa namani!

  12. much as I appreciate Kuomboka, I dont agree with number 10 sentiments not even no. 15. Respect other people’s traditions whether they wear rubish cloths or drink blood. its there ndaba.
Bama Lozi go and see your Litunga

  13. Zambians let us be proud of our culture and indeed traditonal ceremonies. Every ceremony in Zambia or elsewhere in the world is unique in its own kind. The beauty with traditional ceremonies is; they reveal the hiden nature of our cultural diversity to the outside world. Lwacilanisa kwa Namuso ni Lwambi (Lwandi wa Ndoo Namuso wa Nde). I wish Kaongolo ka Nyambe a safe voyage during this year’s Kuomboka. Its a pit I will not participate this year. Maketo in Kyoto, Japan

  14. Malozi,
I think we need a modern stadia arrangement at Nayuma, we can mobilize funds to put proper sitting arrangements there. Kuomboka has a lot of support localy and internationaly. Such an arrangemnet will make revenue collection easy.

  15. Good news. From the valleys of the Eastern Cape, the original root of Makololo to the Mountains of Lesotho, to Auckland Park in Jozi -RSA, all the way to the land of the brave (Namibia), Botswana. Marena Ali Buwa! We salute Zambia for being a peacefull land. By the way, Zambia is the last destination where the children of South Africa (AmaLozi and Ngoni) are accommodated with Sotho and Zulu link. We are coming in big numbers.

  16. Well guys here is my story, Im a Namibian because of my mother, My grandfather Mr. Muchimaezi Machambuzi was a very importatn person in the Makololo people of Barotsi land before Zambia become independent,King Lewanika was touring his people he identified him in a place called palm tree in Zimbabwe where he originated he was a spear man he made spears and axes and some of the spears we are told (speaking under correction) were used in great wars, he worked for king Lewanika marreid a Zambian woman and made Zambia his home until his death, my father went back to Zimbabwe and married his first wife and returned back to Zambia, my cell pls text . 264811002114, can I ask the Lozi royal establishment to give us a spear not much, it will have more meaning enjoy Kuomboka and all our support……

  17. ooh kuomboka, on my engagement in the Caprivi region 31st of October I was wearing the Musisi you know what I wore it with the original canvas but to be honesty I dont like the way people are now modenising Musisi let the people who come for Kuomboka wear the Musisi the way it used to be won by the grandparents.. let Kuomoka be peacefull and enjoy it to the fullest….be in your traditional atres and look original

  18. //25, I agree with you regarding the modern style of wearing misisi and siziba. Its really eroding the cultural beauty in this important Barotse dress. I am sure your point could be addressed promptly if we hard a fully operational Barotse Cultural Centre or some institution of that kind to preserve this beautifull Culture. Here in Japan, Kyoto is the cultural capital and you can find original kimonos (Japanese traditional dress), tailored by the best experts of Japenese culture.

  19. This is the only royalty Zambia has. If you compare it to the Mpezeni Zwangendaba masalamusi or the circus of Chitimukulu cozying in Kansundila’s pocket, you realise these Lozi chaps are centuries ahead of some of the tailed primates we have in Zambia mascarading as royalty.
