Herve Renard to leave Zambia at the end of next month?

National soccer team head coach Herve Renard

NATIONAL team coach Herve Renard is said to be leaving Zambia when his contract expires next month to take up the Angola job.

According to sources in Angola, Renard is already in Luanda finalising negotiations with that country’s football federation.

The sources also said Renard will leave the Chipolopolo together with assistant trainer Patrice Beaumelle.

The Angola national team coaching job has been vacant since February when Portuguese born mentor Manuel Jose left after the team’s poor performance at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations which that country hosted.

The Palancas Negras were eliminated from the Africa Cup in the quarter-finals after losing 1-0 to losing finalists Ghana.

The source said while Renard earns about US$19,000 a month in Zambia, Angola has dangled an irresistible US$100,000.

On Wednesday, Renard was seen checking in at Lusaka International Airport but he said he was heading to Johannesburg.

His agent in France Gael Mahe admitted that Renard is in Angola but could not give details.

“Yes he (Renard) is in Angola but for now, I can’t give you any details,” Mahe said.

But Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) communications officer Erick Mwanza said Renard is still Zambia coach.

Mwanza said FAZ is aware that the Frenchman is out of the country but not looking for employment.

“Yes Renard is out of the country but I spoke to him and he told me that he is not going anywhere. Anyway let’s wait and see,” Mwanza insisted.

Renard attracted the attention of many African teams after guiding the Chipolopolo to the quarter-finals of the continental championship.

Zambia were rated one of the best performing teams in Angola after the team’s fine display of skill.

The departure of Renard and Beaumelle is once again likely to cause a crisis with only a month before Zambia take on South Africa in the Championship of African Nations qualifiers.

Renard joined Zambia in 2008 in May on a two-year contract.

  1. The offer seems good.Only a fool would refuse such a lucrative deal.
Go well Frenchman and we shall meet in the COSAFA!

  2. What do you expect anyway? Greener pastures always get the creme. As long as Zambia does not learn how to entice workers with attractive salaries and services, we shall always be on the losing end. Problem is we demand a lot from a person yet we put less and so the story of greener pastures will never end. But for a fellow poor african country recovering from war having the audacity to challenge zambia this way just shows how unserious we are. Kuti janda coach zoona. ta pwalala. Hope its not April Fools Day Hangover:)

  3. No need for lamentations. Life is about coming and going, different places, different faces. We must learn to close an old chapter and open a new one. Just like we commemorate a new spiritual life with the resurrection of Christ on Easter.

  4. looking at wha renard has done for zambia so far one would have thought the goverment would have come up with so incentives to count the $100000 that angola is offering..like cut on the presido’s frequent flying fantasies..we will miss him

  5. looking at what renard has done for zambia so far one would have thought the goverment would have come up with some incentives to counter the $100000 that angola is offering..like cut down on the presido’s frequent flying fantasies..we will miss him

  6. Renard, should have gone a long time and his time of departure was long over due, infact if he performs like he did in Zambia, he will be manhandled in Angola, like they did with Ziese in Malawi. Besides he not taking the players with him, therefore we will meet during Cosafa and Chan and beat his new team.
    “Musiyeni ayende alibe nchito”

  7. so sad the P.E teacher is gone……… anyway thanks for making our players abit physically fit. But watch out coz Angolans are not as patient as Zambians, he will came bak sooner than he went:d/:((:-?

  8. Am one man happy to see the back of this P. E Teacher. Only somebody who has not followed Zambia soccer and shooting from his hip would miss this Loser. A coach is judged by the silverware he brings for the team. The only Silver ware this loser got for Zambia during his reign is a COSAFA final losing medal. So I don’t know what people are saying about he gave us hope. I guess some of you bloggers are just addicted to being losers and second best. His record can’t beat the record of any local coach that has coached the national team for the duration he did. This guy is a loser and let him go. Am glad he found his BOMBASA and packed it and left. Time to get the serious guys come in and take Zambia to where it belongs. Good luck Angola, enjoy that money shark

  9. There is a saying that when you gmble and win the first time dont try it the second time because you will likely loose. I think for Renard to keep his reputation high its good that he goes to a different team. He did his best for Zambia and Zambia performed very well, that was a great thing to do. And moreover where his going his being given a higher pay why refuse. I do agree with #10 The man, in this case.”Patriotism is going where you will be paid your worth and respected.” rather than get peanuts with Zambia. We all seek greener pastures. Go well my friend Renard all the best where you are going. Bonne Chance!.

  11. Me thinks good riddance. Done his part, we appreciate the effort now let him take his matters elsewhere. Need for a manager whose immediate task is to identify players who’ll gradually take up from Sinkala, Sichone, Chamanga, Chris Katongo and Mweene. Fuse in fresh players, retain the old and finally phase them out … not to mention with the consistency of one coaching team.

  12. Hope he enjoys his stay in Angola. I wonder what happened to the impression he gave us that some “big” African team was talking to him about being their coach at the World Cup. Or was it simple hot air?

  13. Renard was a good coach and this was well manifested in both the results and quality of play exhibited by the Chipolololo. Even against big teams with renowned coaches (on super salaries) the Chipolopolo held their own and often played better.

All bloggers above who are castigating Renard as a coach are just frustrated or unrealistic haters. The man has finished his contract and it’s now time to move on to greener grass. Isn’t this what all normal people do? Hello?! We are in the year 2010.

  14. # 18 – Btw, Angola are also a “big African team”. Certainly bigger than Zambia; they have played at the world cup and quite recently. The move from Zambia to Angola is progress on the world map, not to mention the bigger salary.

People should just learn to wish someone who was not an enemy well when they decide to move on -be it a coach or workmate. All these negative comments or innuendos just make me sick.

  15. #20 – You are right. Angola is “bigger than Zambia.” There are not too many teams in Africa that are smaller than Zambia these days. While Renard did his best for the best, under rather difficult conditions and with limited talent; and we certainly went further in the Africa Cup than we had in a long time, I still think the man blew his own trumpet too loudly. But then again, if no one will blow your trumpet, well, better do it yourself I guess.

  16. # 14 good observation. I think thins guy was always going to leave. He was after enriching his CV cause much as we have been underperforming lately, we are not looked at as a totally hopeless footballing nation. So having Zambia on his CV is a bih Up for him, being a PE specialist.

  17. :d/:d/<:-p<:-p:x:x:xgood 4 him . never heard of anyone who says no to a pay rise , cannot blame the man bcoz i would do the same . but all the same , zambia has achieved better results at the africa cup b4 renard showed up so i think its time to part company .we need the africa cup and 2014 world cup preps with a new ambitious coach . there are plenty of cheap and experienced coaches out there willing to make a name for themselves . renard knows very well that zambian players have the natural talent and that helped him get results and his new found fame . so all the best coach .gives us a :)]:)]:)]:)] when u get there .

  18. The problem is not that he is leaving, the problem is that generally, in Zambia, the need for human resource development is not appreciated. It is really sad that 45 years after indepondo, the country does not have a local coach good enough to lead Chipolopolo to higher heights. Why hasn’t the country developed local talent for this job? The political scene is no different, the country is still recycling dinos from the 60’s to run the affairs of the country.

  19. #25, its jealous among Zambians that make you not to appreciate each other. We Zimbabweans find Zambia a heaven because people don’t know us and we are therefore not affected by their petty jealosies. When a Zammbian goes to another Country, they perform well because there are no petty jealousies around them. So wake, Zambians, stop the jealous and learn to appreciate each other. Zambians are too jealousy, they like gossip and they driink a lot. But we zimbabweans just like women and stealing wherever we can afford and we are always trying to make money and after we have made money we drink smartly.

  20. Let him go! kalu and Rb have plans to better use the $19 000 a month he was going, thats vworth a trip to RB and Kalu can now have the twice daily flihgts to and ro Joburg.

  21. zimwatcher!!! what an insightful observation! really spot on. i don’t know how we grew up to embrace this dog eat dog / zimya neighbour / bring him down or the only zambian with such and such culture

  22. if someone was to refer to me as the only zambian for instance nuclear physicist, it would make me feel very inadequate and unaccomplished. it means that i have led a very unproductive life, failing to groom or produce even one additional nuclear physicist

  23. What has Zambia won under HR? Nothing . So P.Phiri is a better coach than HR. We can still get a better coach than him so let him go and wish him good lucky.

  24. enda!! hh, sata, rb, upnd, mmd, fdd, and others have big supporters, international donors and business people even entire governments…why for all this time they did not ask for development….they just want the power, the control and then what??? why didnt sata ask his taiwanese counterparts to bring us development that just putting oney in his pocket? why are we just having influx of chinese instead rb asking for develpment without strings from the chinese?? fdd dont just blab blab so you get the donor money, father bwalya now is also a party, let your donors build a bridge, rehabilitate a road, open a factory, employ 300 people…these small small things can make big difference, if you want support just open a plant for hiace bus spareparts so they are cheapened…people are employed

  25. Renard wish you well in Angola. Good riddance, you had divided loyalty. Let us build from where Renard has left. Let us look for a better coach..

  26. I doubt it if HR is leaving at all. This appears to be contract negotiation antics on display.RB will go out of his way to keep HR at all costs.HR has added value to the national team and no wonder Zambia was rated as one of the best performing teams in Angola based on the team’s fine display of skill.Renard is the one that put an end to playing names at the expense of player`s current form and talent.HR gave chance to the likes of Emmanuel Mbola who is on the verge of getting into the EPL.I understand that building a team is frustrating and takes times but the reward is great.Ghana is a good example of what Zambia is trying to achieve. We can`t just be always hoping of WC qualification but not doing what it takes to get there.HR has assembled a team if well hanessed can get us to 2014 WC

  27. Well pa Zed too much confusion and pettiness, look at the in fighting in FAZ,NSCZ,Sports Minister,Post Newspaper etc Renard is too young to stay in that confusion.&15,000 not enough to pay a Coach by International standards, but we do not gauge these things using international standards pa Zed,we have our own barometers dont will?Back to the drawing board starting all over again thus what we know best re-building all the time.Goodluck Renard, now let the critics get us a Coach then

  28. we can only change zambia if talk less.we should spend much of time doing work. The government can manage to develop the country if we work as team;we u all the best zambian.

  29. Harve Renard used Zambia as a stepping stone for his CV and geater / bigger offers beyond Zambia. I do not understand the praise he has been recieving. The man failed to win COSAFA and CECAFA, the man managed only a Qarter Final showing in Angola. I think we should focus our attention on Wedson Nyirenda. among the local coaches, he is like the PEP Guadiola of this world. But fo now let him horn his skills for a year with Zanaco. lets get Stephen Keshi, he qualified Togo to the world cup. That experience he can tell usor use it again on Chipolopolo. He is commited unlike this Kalu friend harve who is unpatriotic. Down with Renard.
