ERB Approves Upward Electricity Tariff Adjustment

Share

The Energy Regulation Board has approved an upward increment in electricity tariffs amounting to 285.6 kwacha per kilowatt hour.

And the ERB has fined the north-western energy corporation 2.7 million kwacha for charging unauthorized tariff residential consumers.

Energy regulation board chairman Sikota Wina told MUVI TV that the tariff increase is effect from 1st may 2010.

Mr wina said the tariff increase has been approved because the regulator would like to have all utilities charging cost effective tariffs although this will have to be done prudently with what he terms minimal shock to consumers and the economy at large.

Mr wina explained that the North-western energy corporation will also need to compensate consumers for the unauthorized tariff up to 30th April 2010.

  1. Zambians, Why are we suffering in our**==.Zesco=UP,Fuel=UP,Meal Meal=Up, Suger=UP, Transport=UP,Schools=Up.Salaries=Down:-?:-?:-? and the companies=Foregners injoyin while**== are just^:)^ washiping them.2011.Shall we all rise and do something for one future leaders. This countrty is now like the animal kingdome were:o):o) thins others are =:)

  2. We need more investors in this sector who can exploit other forms of energy too. Zesco needs competition, not the current monopoly it enjoys. Yes the economy is growing hence an increased demand, energy being an important input but economic growth should not widen income gaps as the household becomes more under pressure given the inelastic wages. Something surely has to be done. Zesco is expanding its capacity by building other Hydro-electricity stations but still this entails furtherance of its monopolistic position. Research in solar, biogas etc could improve the household energy supply.

  3. Its Zambia where things are done up side down. Wages are not being increase but almost all things are becoming expensiv. Where are the poor people placed in this country full of selfish people?

  4. Any company must sustain itself through the business it is involved.it is normal to adjust upwards to be in line with economic trends. While water is free from God but machinery, vehicle, manpower their cost have gone up 10 folds.20 to 35% is not too much.Domestic consumers can change to energy saving elements to cut down the cost.Instead of a 100 watt bolb go to a 15watt energy saver.here you save 85% of you usual energy consumption per bolb .I can go on and on .Change the mentality of vamahala and start paying the real value.look how much money we waste on mobile prepayment for there foreign companies and nobody is complaining.I europe, they are cutting cost, freezing wages etc to allow alot of money to go into production and narrow the deficit. Here let us pay competitive tariffs .

  5. How does this hike help poor Zambians does some one in lusaka mind about the suffering zambians in shuntie compaunds

  6. #6 only 25% of zambians are connected to power. There can afford. If they managed connection fee which is high then they can afford.75% of Zambians are not connected and the poor are in this bracket. The idea situation is that all should be connected are afford, but the reality is we have’nt reached that level of subsiding electricity yet.Shunties are unplanned settlement were the majority don’t work or do any kind of business to sustain their families.
