LAZ cautions Chiluba on Katele’s conviction

Share

Former Republican President Dr Fredrick Chiluba

Law Association of Zambia president, Stephen Lungu has described as unfair and unfortunate, second republican President, Fredrick Chiluba’s reaction following the conviction of his former minister of finance Dr. Katele Kalumba.

Dr. Chiluba is quoted as having said that all the corruption allegations against him and his former officials were a political witch-hunt in which the courts were simply being used to achieve political mileage by his enemies.

Mr. Lungu said it is highly regrettable that Dr.Chiluba could go ahead and make such comments over a case whose result was of so much importance to the development of the nation.

He explains that while the case had taken a lot of time to conclude, there was no witch hunt that would have been engaged in.

Mr. Lungu said there is need for every Zambian to show respect to the judiciary because it is mandated to make such decisions.

He noted that it was unfair for the former President to have uttered such remarks especially that he was also part to the formulations of such judicial procedures and systems.

Mr. Lungu has since cautioned Dr. Chiluba to be careful with the statements he issues because they have the potential to erode public confidence in the judiciary.

  1. such statements that bring ridcule or the courts in disrepute should be met with contempt of court. Chiluba should be cited , how dare doeas he condemn the same court that has helped him escape jail together with his wife

  2. Kafupi is really going bananas. That what desperate pipo do.They accuse anyone including flies that are innocent. We may need to auction his panties to recover his panties but again who would evn buy them!Abweze ndalama uyu kawalala!

  3. The court found Katele and co guilty! The convicts have invoked their constitutional right and they have appealed.I honestly do not understand why our former President is bringing politics in these issues. In life it is important to acknowledge some mistakes and taking responsibility which unfortunately we are not seeing in the case at hand. These are problems which arise when a nation choose to be dealing in cash..hence unretired imprests running in billions, abuse of funds, lack of audit trail- simply lack of transparency and accountability! Unless we acknowledge as a nation and learn from our mistakes we shall continue to run in circles.

  4. The LAZ should be seen to be serious, it is not enough to just caution this man. Chiluba was a president and should know better than the rest of us. #1 is right, why not cite Chiluba for contempt? The LAZ must not be just a talking shop.

  5. Mr Stephen Lungu,

Did you hear those jailed (ligant and his lawyer) telling off the supreme court about thier corruption. That is exactly how the people of zambia views our judiciary

  6. Looks like Kafupi is forgeting that 2011 is only a few months away and tables might and are actually likely to turn and when MMD lose he ll swiftly be back in court.
If i were him i’d take a low profile. But he thinks we are stupid as a nation so he continues insulting us at will

  7. LAZ THIS IS CLEAR—–CONTEMPT CASE——-TAKE FREDRICK TO COURT AND LET HIM BE TRIED BY MR MUSONA THEN HE WILL LEARN A LESSON

  8. #3 & #7 Please accept my sincere respect for your views. This how all us Zambians and LAZ in particular are supposed to defend our courts who are the final neutral arbiter in all matters. My very serious anxiety arises when Fred Mmembe insults the Courts when a case goes against him. The LAZ should always protect the Courts, because without without them Zambians will have to resolve their differences in the streets. So Katele has been jailed we respect the judgement of the Courts. And when Chiluba is acquitted we accept the ruling of the Courts. There is absolutely no merit in calling our courts corrupt which Fred Mmembe does often yet he never condemned the single sourcing of Mutembo Nchito by Mwanawasa. We thank God that as it happens Mutembo has done such a good job.

  9. Why is called Dr? He has no Ph.D nor is he an MD. Stop insulting those who have earned such designations. Obama has several honorary Ph.Ds and he is still Mr. Obama.

  10. He should be cited for contempt. Chiluba should learn to shut his mouth and concentrate on his red lips and health to get better. As he said he is healed, he has to face the music like any other thief. The London judgement is there to prove it.

  11. The Judiciary calls disrespect on itself due to its inconsistences. Decisions it makes shows that it dances to political leaders, corruption you name it. Decisions suit certain circumstances and certain pipo.

  12. Chiluba thinks zambians are stupid,2011 he will be back in courts to join thieves bena katele, this is justice, not RBs criminal Acquital. We havent foregotten Jones Chinyama Will explain that corrupt acquital. Guys dont let chi Senior Citizen to comment, if it does DONT read.

  13. This is just a deperate little man afraid of his own shadow. I would not be surprised if all this was political gimmicks. It would not surprise me if this is meant to prepare us for the eventual acquital which, if Katela agrees not to cause any trouble at convention and supports RB, they have promised they will give him. Remember if Katele is truly guilty then Chiluba will be fully aware of this and could therefore blackmail Katele. The only solution is to lock up the “monkey in a maize field”

  14. Curiosity killed the cat!why do bloggers even read comments from such f.o.o.l.s as Senior Citizen and MMD thief a.s.s licker?

  15. Bakazeze are convicted, it goes to show that they totally robbed the nation – how did they come up nama K500m bail money. Bakawalala, MMD will depart next year then all those that stole – Kapokos, Bulayas, Kafupi, Silwamba, Malambo, Mibenge, Kabonde, and many more should be tried, convicted and jailed in less than 3months to save money and the govt of the day to concentrate on more important issues. No protracted court cases.

  16. Because of the connection between chiluba and the convicts, it calls into serious question his RB stage-managed acquittal. This is his biggest worry , causing him sleeplees nights

  17. Chiluba doesn’t care. LAZ can say whatever they want. As long as RB is at Plot-1, Chiluba knows he is safe. Sorry, but that’s the Zambian way!!!
