Government has charged that first republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s reaction to the conviction and incarceration of Post Newspapers editor-in-chief Fred M’membe has exposed his short sightedness.
Chief government spokesperson Ronnie Shikapwasha says Dr Kaunda is short-sighted by trying to say that M’membe is an innocent soul. This was in reaction to a story in yesterday’s Post about Mr M’membe and Dr Kaunda’s conversation shortly after M’membe was released from prison on bail on Monday. The story quotes Dr Kaunda as saying the Post editor-in-chief is an innocent soul.
Lieutenant General Shikapwasha says the same man Dr. Kaunda is referring to as innocent had at one point accused him of being after his Life.
And Gen. Shikapwasha says government is surprised by Mr M’membe’s claims that President Rupiah Banda and former president Dr Fredrick Chiluba are after his life.
He said Mr M’membe is afraid of his own shadow and that his claims are baseless and not new to the government. He stressed that Mr. M’membe has accused all of Zambia’s four Presidents of wanting him dead.
He maintained that the government of President Rupiah Banda is not interested in anything that pertains to M’membe and that they have nothing to do with his case.
Gen. Shikapwasha has also accused Mr M’membe of making cheap and false allegations to divert the attention of the people from his conviction for contempt of court.

Fred Mmembe’s contempt case is currently before the High Court and Dr. Kaunda should always be restrained in his comments. He could be cited for contempt. I suppose that is why he used a phrase that could be interpreted in many different ways.
As for Gen Sikapwasha, please stay out of Mmembe’s case. Note how careful the Danish Parliamentarians were.
As for Mmembe, it is his right to try to mobilise support for his views. A population has to be sophisticated enough to know that Rupiah Banda can not kill any body.

In April 1980 Kaunda accused Elias Chipimo (Senior), then Chairman of Standard Bank, of participating in coup preparations, naming Musakanya and others as his co-conspirators.
After a lengthy trial Musakanya was convicted of treason in 1983 and sentenced to death. He stayed on death row for two years, when he was released on appeal to the Supreme Court which found that the sole evidence against him was a confession obtained under torture. His health was compromised by the conditions under which he had been kept; he lived another ten years and died, aged 63, in 1994.
Musakanya was one of the many innocent souls KK managed to break.

This impression is simply incorrect. It is simply Mmembe’s campaighn against Rupiah. Of course he is entitled to abuse his newspaper and his employees to carry his propaganda. You will discover that if you write a letter to the Post expressing a different opinion , it simply will not be printed. When any one says The Post speaks for the voiceless, the truth is that the Post USED to speak for the voiceless, it now speaks for those who are sympathetic to Mmembe’s campaign against Rupiah Banda. Of course Mmembe is free to do this. It is his right, but every one should know that he is not being objective.

For example, he supported MMD, and would still do so if Magande was president today because Magande would have paid of the debts of Zambian airways.
