The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) yesterday held a meeting with 20 political parties where it was resolved that the political parties should urge their members to avoid all forms of violence during campaigns and abide by the electoral code of conduct.

According to a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday, the ECZ and the political parties agreed during a meeting held at Chrismar Hotel in Lusaka that the political parties would not engage in violent activities in the fourthcoming Luena and Chifubu parliamentary by-elections.

They condemned the violence that characterised the recent by- election in Mufumbwe.

The meeting was called realising that violence was detrimental to the development of Zambia and that it disenfranchised the electorate. Among some political parties that attended the meeting were the MMD, Patriotic Front, UPND, FDD, UNIP, NAREP, Heritage Party, ZADECO, United Liberal Party, APC and New Generation Party.

  1. There is no need for an agreement by political parties for non-violent by elections in a free and democratic society like Zambia.
It is the duty of the police force/service to maintain national peace at any cost and to take action on all law breakers regardless of political affilliation.

  2. PA ZAMBIA PAMUSEBANYA SANA. AMA POLITIKS YAKUBUTA SURE. Just say, ‘MMD agree…’, and not all political parties. It’s MMD who violent not other political parties. As someone above has already said, where’s the police force, what is the police force for in Zambia? And why do they even get paid? Because the money for their salaries is from the taxi payers- the ones they fail to protect whenever need arises.

  3. 20 political partiez, what a shame! So iz ECZ saying there waz an “agreement” for the Mufumbwe violence? Thought common sense and civility should naturally prevail. If the over-paid and pro-longed NCC waz to include one vital item(besidez the many they have trashed) in the final constitution, it should be that; “ther should be a maximum of 3-5 political parties”.

  4. William Banda will send militiamen to Chifubu and Luena and you will see what will happen. Where MMD knows that they will loose the elections, they will send some people to beat the opponents and cause comfusions

  5. Why didn’t ZP attend the meeting. ZP also participated in the Mufumbwe violence and plucked out the ear of one UPND cadre.

  6. Lets hope that we do not see any violence in the up coming elections and lets be positive about the development above instead of throwing insults at each other. This is a positive development for all Zambians which I hope will be retained in next year’s general elections.
