ZAMBEEF is threatening legal action against former Defence minister and Kafulafuta Member of Parliament (MP) George Mpombo over an outstanding debt of K54 million for some cattle he got from the company.
Mr Mpombo confirmed last week in an interview that he owed the company in what he termed was a purely business transaction.
Zambeef management, however, refused to comment on the matter saying they did not discuss business transactions with their customers in public.
But sources from Zambeef told the Times of Zambia at the weekend that Mr Mpombo got some cattle worth K54 million which he had failed to pay despite several reminders.
“We have written to the former minister over this debt but he has failed to settle the amount and now we are considering forwarding the debt to our legal department. But before that, we hope we can have people to meet with the honourable,” said the source.
Representatives of the meat company met Mr Mpombo on Friday last week to try and pursue the outstanding debt.
When contacted for a comment Mr Mpombo confirmed that he owed the company K54 million.
“It is purely a business transaction. I have no problems with that for them to take legal action. In fact we have had fruitful discussions with representatives from the company. The company buys beef and they wanted to buy some beef from me,” he said.
He said he had not failed to settle the debt.
“There was just a small hitch on the documentation. Why should these business houses do such things. This is purely a business transaction? But if they want to take legal action let them proceed I have no problem,” he said.
The former Defence minister said the debt had been outstanding for the past 12 months.
“It hasn’t been outstanding for a long period it’s just been outstanding for the last 12 months,” he said.
Mr Mpombo is currently in court for bouncing a K10 million cheque in a transaction with former Copperbelt MMD chairperson Terence Findla
No wonder the rants. The guy had not saved enough for him to resign and now he is broke to the bone hence venting his anger at the govt.
Mpombo is a farmer & businessman and he has said it’s purely a business transaction and so says creditors ZAMBEEF so what’s the case?
I fail to understand why a business transaction or delayed payment of K54 Million would give so much excitement to the State, ruling party,Times of Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail, surely, there are other major things to talk about not this crap!!!!!!
I think the press in Zambia seriusly needs help, major help!!!!!!!!!!! [-(
I also owe some Company in Zambia, can they please take legal action against me.This is utter nonsense that is not news worthy. How many Politicians owe DBZ including the talkative Bob Sichinga, how come that is not news.Times of Zambia should atleast try to be a bit just a bit professional
#1 sharpshooter
Mpombo went into govt a modest man and left the same way. Firstly,i am proud that he quit his position based on his strong principles,he didn’t wait to be sacked. Mpombo always speaks up and is ready to take on anyone verbally and in a sensible way so to me he is a courageous man and it gives me hope that at least we have a few good men that have the interest of the nation at heart because they are not self centred but want to represent the masses who usually just remain mute on matters that concern them and future generations. Mpombo does nothing wrong,it’s just the culture in Zambian politics which is not conducive for his kind of clean politics, everything he does is perceived to be abnormal because it’s 100% democratic and that’s what the state doesn’t want.

You have a point on the Press in Zambia. The same can be said with The Post and Chimba. It was purely a business transaction between him and the woman. Its normal to have debts but our Press will always scandalise their enemies cos they ahe the power of the pen.
Hah whats going on bane. It’s like the state is busy digging out issue around Mr. Mpombo for use to discredit him. I now believe what one MMD senior member once said that before the MMD fire Mpombo, they will have to first finish him since they have a dossier on him. When they finally take action, Mpombo would have lost credibility in the eyes of people. Remember Mpombo was No.3 in Govt, by virtue of Defence Minister. Hence they have taken time to discredit him based on past scandals/issue. This is very interesting, There will be battles fought between him and MMD in days to come.
Times of Zambia and Daily Mail have been reduced to MMD propaganda. ZNBC also has been reduced to MMD mouth piece. With people like Ben Kangwa awe sure ililyena lishilu. Litontonkanya ati he will be sent as a diplomat like Nevas Mumba. The Times of Zambia should be so ashamed of themselves! This kind of reporting is so petty and MMD-ish! How many Ministers in govt owe companies and individuals money right now? No wonder i don’t buy that Govt mouth piece
MPOMBO IS DESPARATE HE MADE A S.TUPID MOVE TO QUIT GOVT THOUGHT MANY WOULD FOLLOW HIM. HE GOT THE COWS 12 MONTHS AGO AND HAS FAILED TO PAY FOR THEM. ZAMBEEF IS RIGHT TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION. WHEN PMOMBO MAKES NOISE ITS BCOS THE STOMACH IS EMPTY. A HUNGRY MAN IS AN ANGRY MAN.
Does he not get a fee when he gives an interview to the post or the private radio stns?
People let’e be fair, who does not borrow, especially those in business..its cheap to scandalize the man based on a purely business transaction – wait until the MMD is removed and see how highly indebted these ministers are…
daily and times newspaper offer nothing newsworth ifyabupuba fye fyeka fyeka
bA mPOMBO BE MAN ENOUGH YOU ALWAYS HITTING HEADLINES FOR WRONG THINGS. WHY DO YOU LIKE BORROWING IF YOU KNOW YOU CANT PAYBACK. iM SURE WE HAVENT HEARD THE LAST OF YOU AND YOUR KALOBA. WARNING TO ALL WHO DEAL WITH THIS MAN GET YOUR MONEY BEFORE BAILIFFS POUNCE ON HIM
Yes this is a business deal. If he has failed to settle the bill, let ZAMBEEF go and get their cattle from his farm and give him the bill for collection. However if they find he has eaten their meat then they should sue him to the last bone and shave off his beared for ransome. We cant go on defrauding other businesses in the Country as the Zambian Airways did to NACL, DBZ, Finance Bank & Investrust Bank. What type of business culture are we cultivating???? A maize field full of Monkeys????
#10ZUKIST WE BORROW WITH A VIEW OF PAYING BACK. WHEN YOU FAIL TO PAY THEN YOU BEHAVING LIKE ZAMBIAN AIRWAYS BORROWING FROM NACL, INVESTRUST FINANCE BANK DBZ, WHEN YOU CLEARLY KNOW YOU HAVE NO CAPACITY TO PAY BACK. THAT IS OBTANING MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCE AND ITS CRIMINAL. MPOMPO IS ALREADY IN COURT FOR ISSUING A CHEQUE WHEN HE CLEARLY KNEW HE ONLY HAD 47000KWACHA IN THE BANK. HE IS A CONMAN
#12 and #13 you have hit the nail on the head, Mr Mpombo is going about obtaining money and goods when he has no capacity to pay back ati fikaisova. Yes he is getting support from ba pf kaponya party for his criminal activities. 12 months in too much to hold on to someones cows. He sold them ate the money and now wants to cry foul play. I wonder how many pipo he owes. why is zambeef covering him up. Mr Justo Kopulande what do you have to say
At an AIDS seminar an audience of +200 was asked why AIDS kept on spreading. All of the replied “IGNARANCE”. The facilitator asked them what “IGNNORANCE” meant. They all said they didnt know
I don’t see the point in bringing up people’s debt in to the press önly simple minds go that way
mortar mouth debt ridden
This is the problem of being a media whore, you cant control what kind of story will be written about you and you end up looking foolish. Dont want to dance about somebody’s financial problems but would have more sympathy for him if he at least had the decency to apologise for the lies he shamelessly spouted about RB and football recently. That would show that he is decent human being. As far as am concerned he deserves what he gets. If you throw stones at people, surely it is reasonable to expect them to throw stones back?
“It hasn’t been outstanding for a long period it’s just been outstanding for the last 12 months,” Mpombo said.
Obviously this chap is ignorant about ‘time value’ of money.
