Sata causing Pact confusion, says UPND’s Kalusa

Share

United Party for National Development (UPND) national youth chairperson Joe Kalusa yesterday said Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata was causing confusion by making decisions without consulting the UPND.

Mr Kalusa said yesterday that it was surprising that the PF had placed an advertisement calling for people to apply for the Mpulungu parliamentary seat when they had not agreed on who contests the seat.

Mr Kalusa said the PF top leadership was causing chaos in the pact formed last year by advertising in yesterday’s Post newspaper calling for applications for candidacy in the Mpulungu parliamentary by-election without a proper agreement with the UPND leadership.

In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Kalusa also said the call by Mr Sata on QFM Radio last week for Mr Kalusa to face disciplinary action from the UPND was unrealistic because Mr Sata was the one who should be disciplined by the combined leadership in the pact.

He said he would accept to be disciplined if Mr Sata appeared before a disciplinary committee for authorising an advertisement barely three days after UPND chairperson for women’s affairs Chinyama Sekeseke said the pact was yet to decide who contests the seat.

Ms Sekeseke is a member of the PF/UPND technical working group that was charged with the responsibility of making decisions including the selection of candidates on behalf of the pact.

Mr Kalusa said the Mpulungu seat was under the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) and should not be taken by PF without the consent of the UPND.

He said Mr Sata should not be selective in calling people in-disciplined and yet his vice-president Dr Guy Scott authored an analysis, which showed that he was celebrating UPND’s loss of the Luena parliamentary seat.

Mr Kalusa said PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba described UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema as a liar following a statement by the UPND leader that what led to both parties contesting the Chadiza Ward seat was that the pact never discussed and agreed on a uniform candidate.

Members of the UPND were hurt to learn that Mr Kabimba could describe Mr Hichilema as a liar when the truth was that the matter was not discussed.

Mr Kalusa said Mr Sata also questioned his background and yet it was public knowledge that he pioneered the formation of UPND in 1998 and had staunchly maintained his membership to the opposition party since then while other leaders had changed camps.

He said Nkana Member of Parliament Mwenya Musenge should be disciplined by Mr Sata for declaring the PF leader the best candidate over Mr Hichilema in total disregard of the agreement that the candidate would be selected via a transparent process.

Mr Kalusa said the leadership in PF must realise that UPND members also had feelings about who should lead the pact towards the elections next year.

He said the UPND youths have only demanded that the pact should come up with a joint manifesto, the road map, the leadership structure and rules and guidelines to create the waned order.

Mr Kalusa said the other problem that had been cited by the PF leadership was that he had demanded for an explanation on how the opposition party would put more money in people’s pockets, which is a concept that Mr Sata had been promoting.

He said UPND was ready to explain how it would offer free education to the Zambian students and pupils while the PF had failed to offer even a rough explanation on how they would put more money in people’s pockets.

Mr Kalusa said he had worked for several years for the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) and the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and was never referred to as indisciplined.

The pact has lately faced problems and inaccurate statements centered on which of the two candidates was more suitable to lead the alliance amid declarations from each camp that their candidate was the best.

  1. This is not a Times of Zambia problem. This trully exposing how weak HH and his leadership in UPND is. Seems like UPND has a mole in its national leadership. Although this guy is free to utter any nonsense he wants, the ultimate sufferer of all this will not be PF or Sata, but HH and his party. In essence, Kalusa is telling the world that his bosses in his party have no control over him and he is ready to destroy the little credibility they have built lately. It all seems that UPND is not able to maintain its people to an extent they are being bought by MMD to attack the their leaders knowing that attacking HH is not necessary as he is not sellable and not a threat to Banda/MMD. MMD has seen a weakness in HH’s party hence the advantage being taken.

  2. If HH allows this to continue, it will show that he is also not credible partner at all levels. Guess what? This is like getting into a relationship with woman or man and you let your sisters or brothers to come and insult your spouse in public. If you cannot control them, it is better off you let your partner leave rather being insulted by your young brothers/sisters. People around will not laugh at your partner, but you and your family skills. This soon will haunt HH and his party. HH must put his foot down, or else the world will laugh at him.

  3. You guys come on be rational. Kalusa is only saying the truth and this has nothing to do with UPND leadership being weak. You know that. Call a spade a spade and this just what Kalusa is doing. Sata, Scott and Kabimba are the ones causing confusion by undermining their pact counterparts. They should not get too big headed. The MMD has state machinery and without the UPND, mark my words Sata will not win elections. The UPND draws its support from southern, western, North western and Central provinces and without UPND not much support will automatically go to the PF. Sata once again is mistaken about his popularity in these provinces.

  4. # 5, if UPND thinks the relationship is not necessary for them, it is better they leave. This is like having a woman in the house/relationship who feels not happy. If so, does need to climb an ant hill to announce how unhappy she feels? Has she tried to discuss the issues with the partner? Same with HH and his boys, if they see something wrong, suggestion is approaching the partner, not climbing ant hills and screaming on top of their voices.

  5. Yaba its Kalusa the UPND president again. I am bored by this PACT nosense talk bane. I think may be let each party go its way than always having a boy Kalusa insulting Sata.
    Atase bane.

  6. UPND is a democratic party and any democratic party tolerates members with divergent views. Kalusa is expressing his views and there is nothing wrong with what is saying. The problem with PF cadres is that you want to export your dictatorial mentality to UPND, sorry mates, but that won’t work. HH is doing the right thing and he should NOT stifle Kalusa’s voice of reasoning. Sata and his PF followers have typical UNIP mentality. It’s better they leave the pact and form their own pact with UNIP were they belong. Zambia is now a democracy and we are not going to allow Amin type of leadership to evolve.

  7. The problem with some of you is that you mistake indiscipline to democracy. Even in a democracy there is discipline and probably some of you think in democracy we do not need to have a police force. You have used four cardinal words very loosely; democracy, reasoning, evolve and divergent. Look at all these four words, you will find that there’s nothing that Kalusa said that was divergent at all apart from hurting the PACT. Reasoning is done when you try to discuss your views with someone with opposing views, Kalusa is just attacking Sata/PF without reasoning with anyone. What is democratic in hurting your bosses? You are in Europe, democratic I assume. Go and insult your boss at work and say it is democracy.

  8. …from no.5..It’s this same intolerance to divergent views that is causing them to batter their wives and claim it is all because of love.

  9. UPND HAS BECOME IRRELEVANT TO SATA AND THE POST. HH WILL CONTINUE TO BE IGNORED AND BE MADE TO APPEAR A BUM HE IS INDEED. HH CONTINUES TO BURY HIS HEAD IN SAND

  10. when PF speaks no sense chi # 2 &4 keep quite . Honestly SATA , GAY. MUSENGE and KABIMBA recently spoke a lot of no since yet the two did not condemn them .you show how undemocratic you are. When kalusa speaks the truth you get emotional. What kind of animals are you?

  11. no. 9: Indiscipline and stating a fact are two different things. Kalusa is stating a fact & he has hit the nail on the head. Can you tell us what insult or lie Kalusa has said in his statement? Just because he has opposed what some people consider a god leader does not make him indisciplined. Kalusa is just answering Sata’s remark that he should be disciplined. Why hasn’t Sata disciplined his henchmen for publicly calling the UPND leader a lair? If he believes in discipline then he must start be disciplining his our children first before preaching the same to others.

  12. I wonder!! when Guy Scot, Kabimba, Musenge talk against UPND PF you dont ask Sata to discipline them, but if it is Kalusa or any UPND members, you ask for discipline. UPND has demonstrated that they can discipline members going against the pact e.g Major Chizyuka, Chimwemwe counselor aspirant, etc, but who have PF disciplined in this regard??? NONE. Let us be fair.

Then another thing, Kalusa wants Sata to explain how he is going to put money in peoples pockets, so that UPND/PF pact can know how to explain to the poaple as they are campaigning. Let us look at it objectively.

The other thing is that, you want Kalusa to be disciplined, when you have just been condeming MMD for having disciplined Mpompo and magande for airing views without following procedures. Come on Zambians!!!!!

  13. It is very unfortunate that we have to discuss other people’s family affairs. Without excusing GBM, I would say I will have to wait for the verdict. Probably the wife started the fight thinking he is too fat he wont be able to fight back. But she got clobbered. We really don’t even know the culture they have adopted in that house. That aside, indiscipline is not democracy bwana. You are just discussing democracy but attacking GBM on his choice to fight with his wife. You see, that is indiscipline and anarchy. That is what Kalusa is doing.

  14. 1. UPND miscaculated in entering a pact with PF without laid out guidelines.

2.PF can speak their minds without condemnation, while UPND is relegated to an undisciplined party when they do the same.

3.HH is on the verge of political oblivion, there is very little he can do to save his political life, but to succumb and be at the mercy of Sata.

4.Pact is none existent, its only in the minds of the weak UPND.

  15. Kalusa, is saying the most sensible things of late and i like the level of analysis he is doing. This PACT nonsense is imaginative and will surely not be there come next year. However, equally, one should delude himself, MMD is strong and would just need either Milupi or HH to secure a convincing win come next year. PF will again be in the opposition and Sata, will be at that time be more concentrated on fighting for his health than plot one. Therefore, HH & Sata, shud be sincere with themselves and work together, i can assure Sata, that Fred Mmembe can put you on front page from today up to next year election day, but still you would lose, unless you work together with HH.

  16. There is no PACT..UPND, go ahead and field a candidate in Mpulungu as well and anywhere else where there is by-elections in readness for 2011.
Let the PACT issue be dead issue by now and concentrate on mobilising the party. PF is full of thugs and can not allow UPND if they are no benefitting. let Sata rot in Opposition, this is the only chance he has and would like to learn on UPND to get there. So dont give it to him, let him win it on his own, then Zambians of theft mind and thuggery will have themselves to blame

  17. Who needs who in this relationship? Probably that would help us. MMD has seen the weaknesses in HH hence the relentless attacks on Sata/PF. HH, nay, he is totally weak. Actually he is the weakest link in the PACT.

  18. I totally agree with Kalos2121 comments. a union without discipline cannot stand. Yes they maybe differences, which is normal by the way. But how you address those differences is what matters. Kalusa is merely trying to get recognition on the Political scene, but little does he know that not only is he destroying his party, but his integrity as well, if at all he has any left.

  19. Whether you like it or not UPND and HH are a major force on the Zambian political scenery. UPND is growing and so is HH’s popularity. That is the reason why most of you sweat whenever HH or UPND are mentioned, so let us stop pretending and get REAL. If you want to know the fact about UPND’s strength ask Mmembe why he is jealousy of HH. You can rant whatever you like but deep down your heart it hurts you to know that UPND is growing in popularity every day.

  20. The PACT is an evening empire that is quickly turning into sand. It’s slipping thru HH’s hands.
What Kalusa is talking about is sensible, but PF kaponya’s do not think rationally.

  21. I think Kalos 2121 is a fool. I mean you can’t see that Kalusa is telling us that PF is full of disorder? Or may be you have not read the article yet. You mean HH should gag a guy speaking his mind. Can’t you shup up before you expose your intolerance and hatred to HH. I’d rather MMD or HH, not some uncouth flip flop panga wielding demagogue thug. How do you feel about that? So lets learn to keep quite if all we can do is misinterpret and misrepresent others.

  22. I think Kalos 2121 is a fo..ol.

  23. I think Kalos 2121 is not serious.

  24. # 5 Your analysis is correct. Why do Zambians want to burry their heads in the sand and avoid reality. WITHOUT the PACT sata has no chance but it seems there is panick within PF that HH might just have better chances to emerge PACT president because of his education background, age and no political buggage. REMEMBER the sata welding marchet campaign manager in the CHILUBA era. REMEMBER the sata who said, “If i come to power i will forgive chiluba?” and now he is singing a different tune! Dont get me wrong, i support the pact and that is the only way MMD will go, however PF should be fair and consult their partners because without them, they are in dream land and sata will never see plot no.1 may be in his next life

  25. Tactics in politics is very vital. If you have noticed both SATA and HH make less comments about the PACT and allow small boys to do the dirt work. Kalusa has the blessings of the party hierarchy so is guy scott and kabimba.Whoever will make a fatal mistake either by political comments or by silence will suffer the consequences of being unpopular especially once the PACT becomes unworkable. However, Sata thinks he can do it alone because already he has instructed some PF youths in southern province to start mobilising the party meaning he is ready to go it alone. But he should not underrate tongas because when it come to polling day, PF will be in for a surprise

  26. sata and his pF hooligans are totally indisciplined and Kalusa is saying thr truth..there’s no way UPND can be disciplining their members are the other thigs are not tamed..viva HH ..come 2011..sta will never rule Zambia again..wakota mudala!

  27. What PACT? There is no PACT here, the marriage is already strained and broken. Sata is to dominating and wants to keep HH muzled on the sideline like a substitute bench warmer. PACTs rarely work, it goes back to human nature, you cant have two equal CEOs, Chefs, Presidents and so forth. In a conventional marriage you have a husband and wife, in so called PACTs everyone wants to be viewed as the husband and calling the shots. Both these guys have an ego being politicians and I am sure neither wants to ride short-gun as the co-pilot. You simply cant have two captains trying to navigate one ship…….

  28. 2, Just as this pact noise is not a Times of Zambia issue, so too it is not an MMD issue. Why are so you guys so afraid of MMD that you even suspect your shadow is up to no good?

  29. Kalusa is just exposing the issue at hand, we need Youths who can talk when things are wrong. If PF does not need UPND let them say so than acting in the manner Mr. Sata and his minions are doing things. Why should PF advertise before the meet with their partner and that is what Kalusa is putting across. Any member of UPND could have said it. Kalusa is National Youth Chairman he is party of Management team of UPND so when he speaks he does not speak in the wilderness, but with authority of the party.

  30. The PACT was in trouble the minute it was formed. PF is more popular so there’s no way they would allow HH to lead the PACT; besides, Sata at 73 yrs, does not have the luxury of time to be a Veep!

On the other hand, HH though less popular, still has Southern Province and bits of NW in his grip; vital votes without which PF can never assume power! Our constitution has no provision for coalition govt so PACT is a mere gentleman’s agreement and Sata can easily pull a fast one on HH once elected to office. As such, HH still has alot of leverage in this issue and at age 48, can still use his bargaining power for the nxt 20 yrs.

Best bet for HH is to team up with RB/ MMD, come 2011. Abash Sata and the PF lumpens (GBM/ Nsanda/ Kambwili etc). Viva progressive ideas and pragmatic…

  31. Kalusa my young man, this is politics- No one gives in easily. Even among very advanced countries like UK and Australia politicians normally do not inhibit their ambitions- That is how Blair came to power and the current Ausralian Priminister did the same. It will need a lot of convincing on both sides not just simple talk. As for Sata, he cannot afford to drop his guard since he has once been tricked(dribbled) before. My advice is either you ‘disband’ this pact or discuss your differences behind closed doors. But as it is you are only playing in the hands of public enemy no1 (MMD).Oh I forgot they also have their problems except that their President has a lot of power which he can use to teach misbehaving members

  32. Chiwamila Galu kuluma mbuzi. Two wrongs cannot make a right. Kalusa should not do wrong things on the pretext that PF members also did the same. If he wants to make good leadership he should have been pushing for the same thru established channesl which he is claiming to be in the pact agreement. Never argue with a fool because people will not know the difference.

  33. ADVISE TO THE PACT OR RATHER PF AND UPND. NO MENTION OF NAMES TO BEGIN WITH, PF AND UPND ARE A BETTER FORCE TO REMOVE THE MMD FROM POWER. PF’S POPULARITY IS SLOWLY GOING DOWN AND ALL BY THEMSELVES CAN’T DEFEAT MMD COZ IT WILL BE EASY FOR THEM (MMD)TO RIG, PERIOD. UPND BY FAR CAN’T DEFEAT MMD, THEY WILL JUST DIVIDE THE VOTES – SHAME!! I KNOW JOE FROM THE TIME HE WAS A KID AND I CHOOSE NOT TO COMMENT… CHINGOLA, ZAF,CBU(SG), KCM….FOOD FOR THOT.

  34. Don’t bring your skeletons from the cupboard anyhow, when you signed an M.O.U. Sometimes find solace in being quiet, don’t just YAP for nothing. Communicate through your technical team, if you cannot abstain in case you make their work difficult.

  35. Kalusa is not aware that UPND is going to stand in Kafue by election. Secondly if people can recall the Late Chibombamilimo won with a narrow margine from PF. It is always good for this youth Chairman to know that because of his appetite to use other channels the top leadership find it hard to trust him with what is happening. Why not Mr Kakoma coming out to disassociate UPND from the move taken by PF?
Those on the blog criticising Sata/ PF you are missing the point. Within PF and UPND there are hired cadres to spy and speak ill of the pact. Why it is part of politics and this is to do with money. Kalusa it won’t take long before you here is on MMD payroll like Mumbi, Chimumbwa, Chifire, and these family family Church pastors/political paties.

  36. Kalusa has no brains at all, I guess even that small diploma he has from CBU, aledabingafye chikala cha nina. What can UPND do in Mpulungu, you do not even need to consult your intelligence to conclude that you need to field a PF candidate in Mpulungu. **** your thinking monkey asss
