The Ndola City Council (NCC) has warned a local bar, Kwacha Blue Mint, against indiscriminate dumping of empty beer bottles at an old Jewish cemetery.

NCC Public Relations Manager Rebecca Mushota told the media in Ndola yesterday that the local authority has issued a warning to the proprietor of the bar to stop dumping empty bottles at the old cemetery as this is against the public health practice.

Ms Mushota advised Kwacha Blue Mint bar owner to engage the local authority over the collection of waste from the cemetery which has attracted public outcry in the city.

“As the council we will ensure that all the people individuals and business entities adhere to the Presidential directive of keeping Zambia clean, green and health campaign,” Ms Mushota said

She warned that the local authority through the department of public health, will charge any individual or business entity found abrogating the law where waste management is concerned.

“In as much as the council is in-charge of ensuring that there’s control of waste disposal and cemeteries are well maintained, we shall not allow indiscriminate waste disposal in the city of Ndola,” she said.

Joseph Chilongoshi, a representative of the Jewish community who have been cleaning the old graveyard complained the Kwacha Blue Mint bar owner has been engaged several times over littering of the cemetery but to no avail.

And a concerned resident, Benjamin Chitondo said the situation at both old and current burial sites in Ndola is not pleasing.

The affected cemetery is an old burial site for Jews and Europeans located behind the famous kwacha blue mint bar near Rugby field.

  1. The bitter truth is that local government has failed in Zambia. But I doubt if we all recognize this. The last time I checked, Mulungushi University is offering degree programmes in local government. Will it help improve local government? I doubt it.

  2. This is indeed important warning. I hope the offenders take the advice seriously. Let us respect our environment. We are not illiterate savages who cannot understand where waste should go.

  3. Ndola city council does not collect Garbage even when payment is made. Apparently, their refuse truck is always non functional. Yet the mayor bought himself a luxury vehicle. Incompetent council. At times, refuse inis residential areas is disposed off in the backyard due to councils’ incompetency. Probably, kwacha blue mint find themselves in this situation.

  4. You niggers are only showing concern because this is a Jewish cemetery. There’s a lot of rubbish in Kantolomba and you won’t cry about it. How did Mr Joseph Chilongoshi become Jewish community Spokesperson? I never heard of an Israeli man in Tel Aviv who speaks on behalf of the Luvale community Tonga community or Bemba

  6. Surely a PF-controlled council such as Ndola City Council where all councillors are PF and no Tongas to sabotage the development effort should be doing well and leading in service delivery. Instead wht do we hv? Why’s it not working? Who’s brave enough to face this matter squarely?

  8. @Hendrix, I don’t think your comments are warranted, unless you just wish to make a statement of sorts. The Jewish community is different because, unlike Africans of the black orientation in the majority, the Jews band together. They also LOBBY for the cause to be championed even by others. So your question should be: Why don’t Tonga, Luvale, or Bemba communities in Tel Aviv band together to lobby for someone to speak up for them or indeed to STAND UP for themselves? What is stopping you?

    • Iwe Kaloko you cant get the message sure? It is that you Africans’ inferiority complex means you want to be spokespersons for imported cultures. That’s why you pay attention to your master’s house and not yours. You cant export your culture to Tel Aviv because you will be too feeble no one will listen to you

  9. NO NEED WARNING LAW BREAKERS. How in the heck do you warn a law breaker? Arrest the litters and fine them heavily. Then ORDER THEM to clean up the place. Warning is a waste of time and exposes you as weak. ARREST THOSE LITTERS. That’ll deter other would be litters. What happened to Keep Ndola clean? Come on, Ndola City Council, get serious.
