“The RUINS“ UNZA - University of Zambia student residence

Over 30 students at the University Of Zambia have been deregistered for alleged non payment of the remaining balances of their school fees.

According to highly placed sources the students have since been evicted from their rooms by the dean of students Affairs.

Apparently the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) offered to pay the students fees through the student’s hardship loans that were being awarded.

And management at the institution is said to have vowed not to reverse the decision, while UNZASU is pursuing frantic efforts through the University Council to engage management over the matter.

The affected students are said to be in panic situation as they do not know whether their issue will be resolved before commencement of examinations.

When contacted for comment University of Zambia students Union President, Timothy Lumba declined to discuss the matter saying it would jeopardize negotiations going on over the matter.

The affected students who have chosen to remain unanimous are appealing to Government, the University Council, UNZA management and other stakeholders to have a human heart and listen to their plea.

They said If the issue is not resolved by Wednesday, 22nd September, 2010, they will on Thursday 23th September, 2010 seek an audience with the Republican President.

  1. Its only in Zambia where you go and see the president over such matters. If they paid the fees, they would have not been in this situation.

  2. These guys should also know that each time they run amok and destroy other people’s property for no apparent reason, they just put a curse on themselves.

  3. RB is busy depleting government resources on aimless, worthless tours, yet what is at the very core of economic development, SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, which would, if properly funded, produce technically sound manpower to drive Zambia’s manufacturing sector ,can not be funded. What a shame.

We have a very poor manager leading our government.

  4. # 1 it only in zambia where you see the president over fees because the governmnet has created it so. you dot understand effect of poverty. There should policy created by the govt so that compaines can sponsor these student. Look at the salaries of a zambian how many can manage taking children or themsleves to the university.

  5. we are told the man uses five billion kwacha per trip, usesless or not. how much is required to pay for these 30 or so chaps?

  6. My guess is that #1 ahsnt been to a Zambian University.Mwana there you meet intelligent guys from very poor families and its not their fault. Its very sad if such pipo with fine brains end up being excluded from school

  7. It is sad that in our country we do not value the benefits of investing in education for young people. How can you expel students just like that, most of them if not all must be from poor and struggling famillies and I’m sure there is more sensible way of resolving this. I agree entirely with #6 sentiments. There is so much tax payers money being flushed around in brown envelopes for MMD campaigns which could help these future professionals. These are some of the reasons why many of us decided to go abroad where you are valued for your services. Let common sense prevail and allow these chaps to continue with their studies, at the end of the day it will be Zambia to benefit.

  8. On “And management at the institution is said to have vowed not to reverse the decision, while UNZASU is pursuing frantic efforts through the University Council to engage management over the matter… affected students are said to be in panic situation as they do not know whether their issue will be resolved before commencement of examinations” this is sad although it is good precedence that the university is now operating in a procedural lawful manner.

I just hope the affected students will endure in this situation and cope with the demands that it brings.

An alternative to such problems is that the university must create an environment where it can offer parttime-jobs to the affected students t help them raise the required fees in time and retrospectively.

    Be blest…

  9. Sick GK

You truly, as your name suggests are sick and need treatment. Zambia has no programme in place to provide loans to students, to eneble them meet the cost of their University education, as it is in the western world.

Meanwhile, RB spends over K5bn on aimless, worthless tours, money which could be profitably directed towards investing in these 30 young hungry sharp minds, who have been deregistered for no faulty of their own, (simply because they were born in poor families), who in turn would be trained into highly skilled professionals capable of driving the development of Zambia.

  10. You do not de register students on non-payment of fees. It is counter productive. What sort of regulations does this university have? Stone age? Let them finish their studies and write the exams, but withhold their results, degrees and transcripts. It is so simple. They will surely pay the fees (with interest) and the chapter will be closed. I thought the university is run by people who are half way sensible!!!

  11. #1, #4 & #9,

From your comments one can tell that you are from wealthy and privileged families and you have never known what poverty is. If not you may be beneficiaries of the plunder and corruption that is rampant in our country. UNZA was never meant for the rich only.

  12. Sad let us hope an alternative will be found. Most of these students comes from very poor families and they rarely have their proper meals even during their studies. Why cant they give them full sponsorship?

  13. Instead of deregistering the students why doesn’t the govt. pay their fee’s as loans which the students will pay back when employed. The govt wastes money on useless endevours and ignore the best resource to invest in , peoples minds. I lost a friend to suicide because of the stress of being unable to pay his fee’s , it’s a very distressing and depressing situation.

  14. Just a question (or two), are students’ bursaries paid in full by govt? What category of fee paying option are these 30 in? If it is self sponsored then there is nothing to expect from govt – I hear that you can now go to UNZA with 30 points as long as you have money.

  15. GUYS UNZA IS AFFORDABLE.AM @ ZCAS AND IF ASK ME, ITS 1 OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE SKOOLS IN ZAMBIA BUT WE STUDENTS ALWAYS MANAGE TO PAY ON TIME.WHY SHOULD UNZA STUDENTS ALWAYS HAVE HICCUPS WHEN IT COMES TO SCHOOL FEES. PLEASE GET REAL.

  16. #20 UNZA has more students than ZICAS and most of them are from very poor families unlike ZICAS which attracts students from rich families. The gvt should come in and assist these students.

  17. # 20 I’m a classical example of someone who really wanted to come to ZICAS cause its a fantastic school but i couldnt manage. Even UNZA was a struggle for me to pay cause my family is that poor. Trust me for some people its genuinly difficult to raise money. Thank God i even managed to finish my education but trust me you wouldnt want to hear what hardships i went thru

  18. #24 Please try one day to close your eyes and pray this prayer “Lord for give my mother and father for giving birth to such a nut like me, forgive me also for my wroten mind amen!”

  19. What is the total number of students at UNZA? 30 seems to me to be a small number if you look at the bigger picture. I know Sata will come up and say he will provide for a free university education because you will be getting one in 90 days and all PF kaponyas will believe him like they believe he has 2 degrees.

  20. Thih is a sad development. Am a lecturer at one of the Universities in SA, it is not un common to see students leave University due to non payment of fees, some even take more than double the time allowed to complete their first degrees. May be Government should set up a loan fund (Student assistance fund) which the concerned student would then pay back once in employment.Better still a trust fund for meritorius students this would easy the burden on both students and Govt. The issue of wanting to rush to see the president on the matter of school fees is a classic example of how bad the agenda set by the so called independent media has set by not having ethical reporting behaviour particularly towards the Govt of the day. So everyone thinks they should storm the presidency for anything.

  23. While its sad for the students, I believe this is a lesson to all to satrt embracing the juggling of odd jobs to support oneself with education. Pazed the culture of GRZ to come in should be done away with. Whe pipo leave with there degrees to diaspora, for green pastures, further edu, etc. Balaya mukubomba jobs done during holidays by kids just to make ends meet. Its time to wake up pipo. Both for the students to support themselves and those that sponsor them. I see nothing wrong in worhing as a cleaner/waiter as long as one is focused.

  24. #4,5,7,14. Just to clarify things, I know what poverty is, i grew up in the village. i went to the UNZA and i paid fees on my own. i was not on government sponsorship, i used to work for Zambia Daily Mail packing and bundling papers at night. In Zambia we create poverty because we are lazy and like complaining. UNZA HAS THE LOWEST FEE IN SOUTHERN AFRICA. So stop telling me about poverty because i was once poor and made a decision not to be poor. And i don’t feel bad for the 30 students, if they were innovative, they would have paid the fees.

  25. It’s really a shame. A country that doesn’t invest in education has no future. These are some of the brightest minds and they are being held back from developing their gifts and talents. These students are poor and their only key out of poverty is education. The government has failed them and the country as a whole. Zambia is a very poor country and until the government develops a good financial aid program, the country doesn’t stand a chance. In response to #32’s comment, you are the exception to the rule. We are talking about the majority, it’s not always the case that if you work hard you are going to raise yourself out of poverty. Some people are just not a lucky as you; they can’t get jobs if jobs if there aren’t any jobs.
