US says it will watch Africa elections closely and has warned of travel bans for those interfering in democratic process and sponsoring electoral violence

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned that his country will watch closely the actions of individuals who interfere in the democratic process.

Mr Pompeo said the US will not hesitate to consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for those responsible for election-related violence.

In a statement, Mr Pompeo said the United States is committed to supporting free, fair, inclusive elections.

“The conduct of elections is important not only for Africans, but also for defenders of democracy around the world. We believe all sides should participate peacefully in the democratic process. Repression and intimidation have no place in democracies,” he stated.

He said the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression and association are at the heart of a functioning democracy.

“Adherence to these democratic norms and to the rule of law allows all citizens to engage in political dialogue and support their choice of candidates, parties, and platforms. We will watch closely the actions of individuals who interfere in the democratic process and will not hesitate to consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for those responsible for election-related violence,” he said.

“As long-time partners to the nations of Africa, we care about the region’s democratic trajectory and are committed to working constructively with international and regional partners.”

  6. It shows how influential the US are; instead of watching their November General Elections very closely, they are making sure Africa comes second to none. Nothing to be proud of here as an African. It inspires a great concern of why we have continued struggling for free and fair elections.

  14. Lungu rule is symptomatic of violence in Zambia. Today there is vigilante type of rule where law and order has slowly disappeared and bequeched to PF cadres who shoot and harass innocent Zambians while police in uniform watch helplessly.

  17. What!!!!! Mr pompeo has got the brass balls to turn his head towards African election processes, when an electoral powder cake is forming in his own country??? For the first time in the history of Democracy, an incumbent president who is in charge of state machinery, has already declared the 2020 US election as Rigged and the most fraudulent even before the election day. All this because of mail-in voting or simply voting by mail. Which is not a new practice. Soldiers stationed outside the us have been voting this way for a century now. This is also viewed as the best practice during this pandemic. What dander trump supporters don’t realize is that the president of the united states actually votes by mail.
So Mr pompeo, before you look at Africa, sort out that gorilla you have in office…

  18. America is not the mother of democracy….even the supreme court here is compromised….you need to nominate someone who will be doing you favors in the supreme court….

  19. Now I hear will be watching African elections closely and will not hesitate to consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for those responsible for election-related violence. Pompeo said: “The conduct of elections is important not only for Africans, but also for defenders of democracy around the world. Repression and intimidation have no place in democracies,” He further said: ” the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression and association are at the heart of a functioning democracy.” You can consider Chagwa Lungu, Kaizer Zulu, Nkandu Lunyo, Lusambo, Tutwa, Ngangula etc stand guilty already. Please US, impose sanctions now.

  21. Yes sir, and Africa is also watching the US elections closely. So far, dictators in Africa are pleased with the way Donald Trump is going. They will be following the lead. Unfortunately if Trump loses, the power of the US constitution will get him out even if he does not accept the result but in Africa, the Presidents are more powerful than the constitutions, so, they are staying put for life.

  23. I think this timely warning for Edgar Lungu and PF dogs.

You can’t always cheat people all the time and go away with it.

Edgar Lungu thinks he can commit crimes without him being questioned.

    Time up for PF.

  25. “The United States is committed to supporting free, fair, inclusive elections.” Have they any plans to hold such elections?

  26. How can a country which doesn’t know free, fair, inclusive elections as its President alleges be threatening other countries to hold free, fair, inclusive elections?
Is it because they are poor they have to be threatened?

  27. Zambia has its share of problems with regard to governance, however, america and its internal affairs challenges is not at all inspiring.
Not our fault, not their fault. The problem is democracy combined with capitalism.
Zambians need to consider Socialism as an option for capitalism
