Sata against Pact – UPND

Some Lusaka residents during the launch of the UPND-PF pact

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has said statements by Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata and his secretary general, Wynter Kabimba on the status of the pact go against the spirit which prompted its formation.

And the opposition party has said PF is no longer as strong as it was in 2006 and 2008 and therefore cannot claim that only its president could lead the pact.

Reacting to statements by Mr Sata and Mr Kabimba in yesterday’s Post, UPND acting party spokesperson Douglas Syakalima said by their own statements, the two did not believe in the spirit of the pact.

“By saying that UPND should accept that PF has more MPs than the UPND and the issue of presidency only means that they don’t believe in the pact,” Mr Syakalima said.

But when contacted for comment, Mr Sata said his party was still strong.

“If they respect the pact they would not speak like that. We have helped them to condemn Chizyuka (Namwala Member of Parliament Robbie Chizyuka).

“Those rebels in PF are our problem. We went to Chifubu where there was a rebel MP and we won,” Mr Sata said.

But Mr Syakalima said the pact had never discussed the issue of presidency as claimed by Mr Kabimba.

He said in Lusaka yesterday that the claim by the PF that it had more Members of Parliament (MPs) was wrong.

[pullquote]“As an old man, we expected Mr Sata to provide wisdom in the pact, but he has failed. If anything his statements in the media are showing that he is losing wisdom every day,” Mr Kalusa said.[/pullquote]

“The reason why people enter into pacts or alliances is because they realise that they cannot single-handedly win and form Government.

“That’s why we have had a slogan in the pact that if it is not Michael Sata as president then it should be Hakainde Hichilema,” Mr Syakalima said.

He said PF was no longer strong because most of its MPs voted with the MMD in Parliament and wondered why the PF could not accept reality that they had been losing to the MMD in Luapula Province.

Mr Syakalima said that PF could no longer bank on its past glory because the “political pendulum is emotional and unpredictable.”

He said while the Liberal Democrats were a small party in the United Kingdom, they determined who formed Government in the last elections.

UPND chairperson for energy Garry Nkombo said it was wrong for Mr Sata to create an impression that PF was larger than the pact.

Mr Nkombo noted that the more than 70 per cent of the people who voted against the MMD were more than the share of the PF.

He maintained that Mr Kabimba was an enemy of the pact and that the Zambian people would blame him for breaking the opposition alliance.

And UPND national youth chairperson, Joe Kalusa has claimed that Mr Sata has lost wisdom despite having served in Government for a long time.

“As an old man, we expected Mr Sata to provide wisdom in the pact, but he has failed. If anything his statements in the media are showing that he is losing wisdom every day,” Mr Kalusa said.

And Copperbelt UPND chairperson Elisha Matambo said in Ndola yesterday that the party grassroots members were “sick and tired” of the attitude of the PF bigwigs who had continued to issue statements that belittled the UPND.

  1. I sense an aura of arrogance from PF,they think they are so popular they can go it alone and they seem not to give a rats A.ss about UPND anymore,on the other hand UPND painfully knows well that the only chance they have of getting any closer to state house is with the help of PF and they are being bullied left right and center…typical tongas

  2. UPND/PF will now come to terms with reality of raising false hopes for themselves. The reason for the problems in the pact are as follows:

    1. The purpose of the PACT was to impeach RB in 2009 without an otlined agenda for Zambian people.
    2. The method of campaign is misplaced as they wait to see what RB says or does and then criticise him, instead of selling their policies to the poeple of Zambia.
    3. PACT is based on hatred
    4. PACT does not believe in the second coming of Jesus Christ as outlined by PF SG -Winter Kabimba. Mind you! if you mess up with God, He takes away all his wisdom from you and you start behaving like a lunat.

***Now its is Magande forming his party. NOW you will see the REAL colours of the POST Newspaper- the way they shift support to Magande.****

    Thanx

  3. Those who strongly believe that on their own, they absolutely stand no chance of defeating Rupiah should pack their bags. And those who think with some good work, and given Rupiah’s record, can defeat him on their own, they should go full throttle and mobilise for next year’s elections.

  4. Only HH did not know that the Pact was a non-starter.UPND veterans like Hachipuka,Matongo etc were watching from the terraces coz they know Sata inside out and that explains why they are quiet cos they want the boy who conceived it to solve the mess he single-handedly created.
Ati Viva Pact? I used to feel sorry for the supporters for they could not foresee what will eventually befall the fallacy called Pact.

  5. #1 said PF is selling the PACT and they are being bullied left right and center…typical tongas’.
Typical Tonga sydrome and i agree with him coz am Tonga and i know how these other people in Zambia can treat us because of our humble and peaceful approach we have with a neighbour.
I trusted Mr. Kabimba and its him that has spoiled Mr. Sata. Mr. Sata cant condemn Kabimba nor to reprimand him of issues which he utters…its unfortunate to have such a partner in development. Its time Hakainde to search for a pre partner and get to govt in 2011. PF has belittled their partner and called them different names and you cant go anywhere with such behavour. Douglas Syakalima, your are a psychologist, please advise HH and join Magande. NMP will win elections this time..lets bet!

  6. THE UK LESSON @ The Post 24/09/2010

………..If Nick had tried to nick his way into 10 Downing Street and become Prime Minister instead of David, disregarding the statistics, that deal would never have been consummated. It would not have made sense also, for David and Nick to start debating on whose party was bigger and more popular. The reasons are clear – the electoral statistics dealt with that clearly. ….

….This is exactly what the problem is in this pact of PF and UPND. It seems there is a detachment from reality in their discussions. Even the most obvious issues are contested. In the case of Nick in the UK, he knew what he was looking for in the coalition with David. He did not go into the coalition to become Prime Minister by some stroke of luck or negotiating…

  7. CONTINUED

……They shared ministerial positions. But it was clear that Nick’s party was not going to get the key ministries of government because in truth, the Conservatives were the senior partner in their marriage of convenience……Nick did not ask for 50 per cent of the government portfolios and be treated as an equal partner. This is what seems to be missing in the dealings of the PF-UPND pact……..

……The sizes of the two partners cannot be established by negotiation. It is also folly to try and establish who of the two party leaders – Michael Sata and Hakainde Hichilema – is more popular through negotiations. These are matters of fact which they should face and move on to deal with more elusive issues…….

  8. CONTINUED FROM ABOVE

Rupiah cannot be defeated by a pact that does not know who its leader is and whether it’s coming or going. It might even be better that the parties tackle him independently instead of cheating themselves that they are in a pact when in reality they are in an alliance that is only sapping their energies and is continually pulling them back because they are headed nowhere.

…If the Pact cannot sit down and say who got more votes in 2006 and 2008 between the two of them, which presidential candidate got a higher share of the votes, how best they can use the previous advantages that they have garnered, then what issue are they going to discuss?…

  9. MMD should be booted OUT. But who has to take over. MMD is NOT the altenative to it’s mis-rule & I will NEVER change for now this position.

  10. PF+UPND(Pact)=Rupiah. RB is too hot for the pact. The pact can’t stand his pressure bcoz he takes politics easy, he doesn’t panic. The pact doesn’t any agenda apart from quarrelling among themselves. For sure PF and UPND knows themselves that they can’t form a government on their own without a pact/coalition. Anyway, better Rupiah than a pact without an agenda.

  11. PF’s vuvuzela The Post editorial is trying to misled some dull minds.Nick & David entered an alliance immediately after the election & their constitution can not be compared to our circus in Zambia. This is what UPND team is saying,PF’s support is waning & they are still using old data to bully their way to the top on the other hand UPND has gained ground & recent by elections & ward elections can confirm that.
Why is Mmembe denying this reality. In all fairness Sata & his lumpens have nothing new to offer,Vasco da Banda is far much better than Sata both intellectually & experience

  12. Let the UPND remain in the pact. wait for PF to move out of the pact so that the people of zambia who called for the pact will condemn SAta and his PF. Sata has lost the opportunity of leading Zambia and it will not come again.

  13. #2 Spot on. The Post has now moved on to the New Magande Party. We’ll be entertained with insults to Sata and HH not long from now…watch this space…by the way, Maurine Kakubo Mwanawasa will be the Vice President in this new party. I can just imagine…Tonga President and Lenje Vice President..Bantu botatwe kulibonesha ta.

  14. Fact PF is second largest party and then UPND. Therefore UPND can not claim to be equal partners in the Pact when the figures and statistics shows otherwise. Don’t think that PF is loosing grounds in Luapula that is propaganda.

  15. We told you from the word “go” that the PF/UPND PACT is HEADLESS,you did not understand us,now that it has come to a stand still speaks volumes.

  16. SAD BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

Finally the pact has today Friday September 24, 2010 in the year of the Lord officially crumbled without a divorce cooling period considered. All announcements follow this tip. Tired of PF bullish tactics and abuses, poor HH has curved in to the pressure of his base which has tenaciously threatened to impeach him if he doesn’t withdraw from the Horse-Rider marriage of convenience with Sata.

President Banda and the ruling MMD are very saddened at the turn of development in the embattled pact. RB passionately wished the pact had stood the test of time for the sake of our bourgeoning democracy. But alas, the two tribal warlords could not just accommodate reason and leadership spirit in the pact.

We are all in mourning. RIP pact!

  17. UPND finally standing up for themselves after being bullied left right and center by PF and their vuvuzela.

  18. The truth hurts. UPND are blind to simple and straight forward facts. UPND should be very plain in understanding simple statistics. If they can’t understand simple and straight forward issues, then they are not even fit to ask for a pact. Simple.

  19. PF did well in the 2008 presidential elections in Luapula Province and they have just reatained the Chifubu seat. Thats why all the rebels from LP are scared because they really know what obtaining on the ground in their costituencies. Ask matero mp, she will tell you!

  20. Fred m’membe is a PF cadre hence his upside comments on the pact in today’s post. My freind, if you want sata to rule then support the pact 50/50. UK did what they did because it was done after the election and they knew from the most recent results not past history records. If you think like that then MMD will be in power for ever and ever because past results show them as in front of all political parties including PF . If PF and UPND go separate in 2011, UPND will have more votes than PF.

  21. Well done team UPND!!! You demonstrated that you are shrewd and well organised. You have shown PF that being quiet does not mean one is an i.diot. You allowed them shout and scheme as much as they wanted in their vevuzelas but your kept your cool. You effectively used the likes of Kalusa to counter any PF propaganda. You have demonstrated team work by sorting out Sata and his hench men Kabimbe and Scott using sharp shooters while shielding the party president from such amateur talk. You have systematically worked on Sata and Kabimbe’s appetite for publicity and forced them to wash dirty lenin in public and now they have to swallow their own words. You have taught them a lesson not to play with intellectuals. Actually you have made the entire PF team look disorganised and disoriented.

  22. UPND Pulls Out of Pact

The United Party For National Development (UPND) has resolved to withdraw from the electoral pact with the Patriotic Front (PF). Extremely reliable UPND sources have revealed that it is just a matter of time before the official announcement is made.

Sources say the party’ s National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Management Committee (NMC) have rejected the alliance with the PF describing it as not workable because of serious differences which have spilled to the media. It is said that the NEC and the NMC met on several dates between 1 and 14 September 2010 and resolved to pull out of the Pact.

  23. According to sources, the only person who opposed the pulling out is party president Hakainde Hichilema (HH )who argued that the UPND could not win on its own.But the party structures prevailed over him and in apparent anger at the party’s resolution, Hichilema held a press briefing last week where he accused party members of misleading him.

But sources say Hichilema has since accepted the party resolution as can be seen byMazabuka MP Garry Nkombo’s carpeting of the PF on radio Phoenix on Monday.

Nkombo is one of Hichilema’s right handmen and when Nkombo speaks, it is often Hichilema speaking through him

  24. Non-partisan electorates are tired and fed up of this non-starter Pact. Let us now move forward, the Pacters had no plan to move this great nation forward apart from getting MMD out of office.Selfishness has killed the Pact, may it rest in pieces! Abash selfishness! And my condolences to die-hard Pact supporters especially the intelligent UPND members.

  25. Mmembe & Sata should not cheat Zambians that PF is more popular than UPND based on past election results. This is pure deception. Imagine the UK labour party claiming four months ago that they should be allowed to form govt since they had more seats than the conservatives in the past two elections would the UK voters agree to that? The Liberal Dem/Conservative scenerio Mmembe is trying to use is totally misplaced. As pointed out by others on this blog, that comparison is only valid immediately after an election not 4yrs later. No more living in past glory. Moreover PF popularity is fast waning. They are now a shell of themselves after numerous assaults from FTJ.
Mmembe’s attempt to shove Sata through the throat of Zambians has lamentably failed. It’s either HH or we continue with RB.

  26. Knowing Sata’s political skill, with the Launch of Magande’s Political party, his camp must have read the writing on the wall that the PACT may have serious problems taking southern province, whose vote will undeniably be split between those supporting Magande and those for HH.

  27. On “Reacting to statements by Mr Sata and Mr Kabimba in yesterday’s Post, UPND acting party spokesperson Douglas Syakalima said by their own statements, the two did not believe in the spirit of the pact.[..] “By saying that UPND should accept that PF has more MPs than the UPND and the issue of presidency only means that they don’t believe in the pact,” Mr Syakalima said.[..] But when contacted for comment, Mr Sata said his party was still strong.[..] “If they respect the pact they would not speak like that…”,” I am glad that the mighty UPND Team has shown PF what respect is. UPND juniors to HH (Joe Kalusa, Syakalima and Nkombo) well doe and keep it up.

Let the PF vuvuzela for Serpentine Sata MC continue to cheat Mr PF and his party that they are popular but HH…

  28. Zathu,

Hope you know that MMD has wrecked up PF in Luapula, Lusaka and are now intensively wrecking him in Northern province. Hope you know for Lusaka that demographics there is predominately Tongas, Easterners, Solis and lozis who would not vote for Sata give if his divisive tribal politics takes ethnic lines to the wire.PF won Luapula in 2006 on the protructed cases of Chiluba whom Sata pledged to drop all cases before the courts. If you think they are stupid to vote Sata despite his trencherous nature then its you who needs salvation of the mind.

  29. IF ITS TRUE THAT THE PF/UPND PACT IS NO MORE THAN IT IS A SAD DAY FOR ZAMBIA BUT GOOD NEWS FOR THE MMD.THE PROBLEM IS THAT BOTH LEADERS WANTS TO BE AT PLOT 1 AT THE SAME TIME.HH SHOULD HAVE BEEN READY TO ACCEPT THE POSITION OF THE VICE PRESIDENT.NOW THAT MR MANGANDE HAS ALSO FORMED HIS OWN PARTY WILL MAKE MMD STRONGER AT ELECTIONS BECAUSE THE VOTES WILL BE JUST DIVIDED AND THE VOICE OF THE ZAMBIANS WILL GO UNHEARD..HOPE HH WILL THIN[K TWICE BEFORE MAKING THE SPLIT PUBLIC,LOOK AT HILARY CLINTON,SHE FOUGHT ELECTIONS WITH OBAMA BUT TODAY SHE IS OBAMAS RIGHT HAND LADY..GREED DOES NOT TAKE ONE ANYWHERE.NEXT YOU WILL HEAR THAT UPND JOINS PACT WITH MMD AND EVERYTHING WILL BE SQUARE AT ONE AGAIN.. .

  30. # 33 ABDUL RASHID.Dont put blame on HH,look at the lumpens in PF,they want to portray a picture that if anything UPND should be swalloewd by this unreliable ship.My friend their is no security in politics.
I personally think HH can accept to be vice but look at the nonsense coming out of the so called more money in your pockets

  31. HH still has stamina to go on..stat’s time is over..PF you are doomed..UPND..you have done the right thing…pull out form the useless pact!

  32. (N# 24. Zed Patriot says:) I RESPECT YOUR ANALYSIS. IT’S SO VALID. PF IS IN THE SHELL OF SELF CENTERED, THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND THAT THEY STRONGLY NEED UPND IN THIS PACT JUST AS MUCH AS UPND NEED PF. SATA HAS USED KABIMBA AND THEY HAD BADLY DAMAGED THE PACT. WORSE STILL THE TWO DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE THE MAIN LOSERS THAN HH. PERSONALLY I BELIEVE AND UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE MANY YEARS AHEAD OF HH TO CONTEST FOR PRESIDENCY THE CASE FOR SATA, HENCE SATA IS THE MAIN LOSER. THIS IS THE ONLY CHANCE HE HAD TO BE A IN GOVERNMENT BE IT A VP. IF I WAS IN HIS SHOES I WOULD LET HH TO LEAD THE PACT AND I WOULD BE THE VP SO COULD STILL EFFECTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO THE WELL BEING OF ZAMBIA. I PERSONALLY UNDERSTAND SATA AND PF IN GENERAL. THE PARTY WAS FORMED FROM FRUSTRATION AND IS ONLY MEANT…

  33. Comparing the coalition between the Lib Dems and the Conservative is way off the mark, for a start in the UK the party with the most MPs become the government and the leader then becomes the Prime Minister as we all know. This is not the same case in Zambia, where the presidency is decided by the presidential vote and if one looks at our consititution the president has the power to hire and fire, the question then becomes if HH for instance was to accept the vice presidency where is the guarantee that Mr Sata is going to keep him in that position for the length of the parliamentary term??
Let them work on their own selling their specific polices and if they get more MPs than the MMD they could then opt to impeach the president with the option of a new presidential election.

  34. CONTINUED.
IT IS ONLY MEANT TO REVENGE TO THOSE WHO DID NOT MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR SATA TO BE CHOSEN AS A SUCCESSOR DURING THIRD TERM EPISODE. THIS IS THE REASON WHY UNDER SATA PF WILL NEVER TEST THE BASIC ELECTIONS. AS LONG AS SATA IS WIDELY ADORNED BY MANY ZAMBIANS OR AS LONG AS THIS MAN IS STILL ACTIVELY IN POLITICS ZAMBIA WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY CHANGE BECAUSE THE SEATING GOVERNMENT WILL DO ANYTHING POSSIBLE TO AVOID TO BE PUNISHED BY THIS MAN CALLED SATA. IN OTHER WORDS I CAN SAY SATA IS AN OBSTACLE TO ZAMBIA’S DEVELOPMENT. MMD IS AFRAID OF LOSING POWER BECAUSE THEY FEAR THIS MONSTER! WE ARE IN SERIOUS PROBLEMS. THIS IS MY PERSONAL UNDERSTANDING. I HATE NO ONE BUT THE TRUTH WILL REMAIN THE SAME. OTHERWISE CHANGE IS INEVITABLE!

  35. Membe and his POST are like the PACT finished and reduced to a campaign manager for PF…Membe has never liked HH has given more coverage to his boss Sata and cannot wait for PF to break away from UpND….HH thought being a calcuator boy he could calculator Cobra but now he is a vuvuzela for PF crying he cannot win on his own..weldone Veep to Sata but thats over Wynters deadbody…but we knew better….its over please just help yourselves and mobilise individually others you will be humilated in 2011 which is not far now…

  36. Observer

Sorry mate. I do not, and I repeat, I do not need salvation of the mind, simply because, I am very independent in thought and deed. I debate on political issues affecting my country because it has been misruled for a very long time by plunderers, confessed drug dealers, failed economic managers, thugs and the like, and I am fed of endlessly supporting my cousins, nephews and other relatives from the extended family, who suffer, not because they are lazy, but because; they are not paid in time for their produce; the few educated ones can not find jobs as they don’t know anyone in high places, the intelligent youth have to always to depend on me to pay their fees at institutions of higher learning, the list is endless.

I do not depend on connections to govt for my livelihood

  37. Let PF go it alone and see if they will form gorvernment especially……….with their pride Elo lwanyaaaa lwaleta nempepo

  38. I like browsing your site because you can always get us fresh and cool things, I feel that I must at least say thanks for your hard work.

    – Henry

  39. UPND ought to take those criticism and work on them instead of brushing them aside and reacting rather indifferently. Any good thing is bound to be criticized and rubished by even the “evening village drunks” who walk home shouting at the top of their voices, yet can’t remember a single thing they uttered the previous evening. So UPND listen if you may but do what you feel is the right thing to do.
