Government has called for concerted efforts in combating
deforestation in the country.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Kelvin Kamuwanga said private sector participation in the implementation of aforestation programmes was key in efforts of reversing the ecological imbalances created by deforestation.
Mr. Kamuwanga said social economic development of the country was dependent on well-managed natural resources.
Mr. Kamuwanga emphasized the need for enhanced sensitization campaigns on the dangers of deforestation to efforts of economic and social development.
Mr. Kamuwanga was speaking when he officiated at the national tree planting ceremony held at the farmers trading centre in Nyimba last Friday.
And speaking earlier Provincial Forestry Officer, Bwalya Chendauka said over 1,500 onamental trees would be planted in Nyimba.
Mr. Chendauka said the ornamental tree was a symbolic tree which defined the boundary of a place.
He said the tree planting exercise should trickle down to the villages where deforestation was rampant.
