Former Lands Minister Gladys Nyirongo with her lawyer

The Lusaka High Court has upheld the conviction of former Lands Minister Gladys Nyirongo for corruption and abuse of authority of office.

The court has however reversed Rev Nyirongo’s jail sentence from four to two years.

The sentence has been reduced to preserve her parliamentary position.

The judgement was handed down by a panel of three Judges.

These were High Court Judge in Charge Philip Musonda,Judge Albert Wood and Jane Kabuka of Ndola High Court.

Reading the judgement Judge Kabuka noted that both the two grounds of appeal the appellant relied upon lapsed.

The High Court has granted Reverend Nyirongo leave to appeal.

This is in a matter where Reverend Nyirongo appealed against the four year jail term that the Lusaka magistrates court slapped on her in 2009, for corruption and abuse of authority of office.

Meanwhile, the delivery of judgement was temporarily suspended as Reverend Nyirongo, who appeared distressed begged the court to excuse her and allow her to go out and vomit.

Facts before the court are that on unknown dates but between January 1, 2006 and February 2007, Reverend Nyirongo, directed a Ministry of Lands officer Daisy Mulenga to generate offer letters of Foxdale Land in Lusaka to selected individuals.

The Magistrate Court pronounced that Reverend Nyirongo contravened land alienation procedures .

Consequently Reverend Nyirongo appealed to the High Court.

  1. Sorry Reverand, the devil always wants to bring down those tiring down his kingdom. May God guide you and get you back on your feet.

  2. Twapapata please forgive the Rev. she will never repeat it again, this has been a big lesson. She has repented from the bottom of her heart.

  3. Animal farm indeedn #3 are you serious!! Are ordinary citizens who are convicted given any such consideration you are asking for Glady’s? And what is this logic the High court use to reduce the sentence. If she was found guilty she is not worthy of parliament and should have immediatly lost her seat. In any other civilised society she would have resigned on moral grounds immediatly the case was brought against her. In our case we have the judiciary protecting her stay in parliament by reducing her sentence. What is the legal basis in reducing the sentence to 2 years to enable her retain her seat? A mockery of justice, equality and ethics!!

  4. Free Rev. Nyirongo. You are wasting the judges’ time by bring people like her to court instead of concetrating on real thieves like Chiluba. This is animal farm at it’s best.

  7. Truly it’s animal farm. Zambia’s politics is all about Ikutausebane. There is no politician in Zambia’s history who can resign on principal (fraud). If the same (reducing of the jail sentence) can happen to the Rev, it will speak of volumes of what will happen to Regine. Lets wait and see that happens with the thief by the name of Regine.:x:x

  8. Why is she so thin, is she being healthy or what? At long last she will have sound sleep, but with a tainted record, what an honourable Parliamentarian.
