Lusaka Residents in flood prone areas urged to evacuate

Share

Lusaka has began experiencing heavy rains

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has called on Lusaka residents living in flood prone areas such as Misisi, Chawama and Kuku compounds to consider evacuating to safe places before the rains become tense.

DMMU National Coordinator Domiciano Mulenga said although mitigation measures have been put in place by his office, people should not feel comfortable to live in such places as they cannot fully determine the amount of rainfall expected this rainy season.

Mr. Mulenga said DMMU and other stakeholders such as political players have played their role in disaster mitigation and called on people to heed to their advice of evacuating to places that are not prone to floods.

He explained that government has inadequate resources to embark on a repatriation exercise hence the need for residents to help government by moving to safer places before the rains become torrential.

Mr. Mulenga told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that government is aware that most houses in flood prone areas are rented houses adding that people can rent elsewhere than sticking in the same places.

Mr. Mulenga has meanwhile thanked the Road Development Agency (RDA), Rural Road Unit (RRU) the Zambia Army and the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company among other stakeholders for their corporation and support to calamities.

He said it is only through concerted efforts by various players that issues to do with calamities can be won in the country.

Last week the DMMU disclosed that they have put in place various mitigation measures to curb floods not only in Lusaka but the country as a whole.

Last year government evacuated about 177 flood affected families to the independence stadium following torrential rains that hit the country.

  1. Well am thinking of my next trip,i dont care about what happens to these people, after the dont vote for me,the villager’s who vote for me dont experience floods,Thandiwe am coming,i was posting something on the floods.who cares.

  2. mailkulile with no council approval thats the result. its raining cats and dogs so if you in a wetland chances of water sipping thru your house are high. misisi compound its back to independence stadium tents. after the rains most of misisi should be evacuated to pave way to proper development. the squatters just have to move

  3. On Saturday I was at Kmwala shopping centre and found some excavators parked near Defence Staff College. I cant beleive the amount of shoddy work being done. The road going to Zamise was dug some two years ago and it is in the same state. Those drainages will be clogged with silt and and other mateirls hance water not draning fast. Web cant have a situation where year in year out facing the same problem of floods. Why didnt Mr. Mulenha’s office asked pipo to relocate to other compounds before the on set of the rains. Pipo find it better to live in Misisi oz of its proximity to central business district. Its is simply within walking distance. This problem will never be solved as long as we deploy bad approach. Its like trying to mend a busrt pipe whilst the pump is running at the water source

  4. Lusaka is run by pf not so? Am sure that a certain serpent said that we would get an idea of how the country would be run by the way his party runs local councils. So you can see why pf’s symbol is a bwato as they have manifestly failed to do anything about flooding in Lusaka but their leader has all the time in the world to sue every tom, dick and harry. By the way, when is the report on pf run councils going to be produced?

  5. # 8. VJ Rigger – Whenever tyhere are bye elections what do Kunda and RB tell the electrolate? there message is “dont vote for oppostion, because even if you do they do not have access to Government and resources so they will not deliver” I guess you can see how MMD is making sure they prove this

  6. # 8 VJ Rigger , You must think before you comment at times. Who funds the council for such projects? Your MMD clowns have made Lusaka and most councils to operate without a proper revenue base so they cant function properly. Only ichinkula can put the blame on PF for such problems. The issue of floods has been there before even PF took over Lusaka. The matter needs serious intervation from the government. Just accept that MMD has failed.

  7. Are we saying the more than 1,000,000 people in these areas should go elsewhere where houses are not even readily available..or are we saying we should close down these compounds,,, where are the MP’s and Govt we are told we put in place?

the solution is not to leave but let leaders stand by their words, this situations can be overcomed if only leaders had the people at heart and cared for them..efforts should have started a long time ago to sort out this issue..it is not easy for these poor people to find houses in other better places at affordale prices to them especially in rainy seasons

  8. What measures…? Year in year out same problems and same shit talk… Advice to move to safer places…, which places?… what the f…k is that? Then where does that leave the landlords…? This country needs serious prayers else we are f…ked!!!

  9. #11 Ichi Nyamu Nyamu (Proud PF Kaponya – zealot)
    #13 Inkondo Tata
Your ‘great’ leader, Sata promised the nation after the 2006 elections that he would change the face of all the cities run by PF.For your info, a full council of councillors approves all council budgets and therefore the bucks stops at PF in lusaka.
Problem your Mayors are busy buying suits using council money at the expense of development.

  10. lets not be fun about the most of you in lusaka are living in better place why can’t you accomodate the affected friends in Kuku, Misisi and thelike

  11. You PF fools stop complaining about MMD as floods are not new to Lusaka even when Satan was a minister in Chiluba floods used to be there! Zambian needs not to trust politicians so much. Even if your devil comes to power floods will be there as he will forget about you pipo of chawama & John Howard. Just work hard look after your family & stop expecting food to fall from heaven when Satan pig devil becomes president.

  12. This problem has been with us for some time but we pretend that it will go away on its own, in the meantime some characters are buy feeding us with meaningless statistics on how the Zambian Economy is doing ”so well”. Our priorities are indeed misplaced…everything is politics!

  13. PF runs most of lusaka. watch them blame GRZ, they have had a yr to do something. Those councilors are busy following satas insults and court cases. If they cant even plan for comming floods, how can they run the country ?

  14. #18 Thandiwe G – String Banda; practise wat u preach… Start doing it and lead by example!!! Am sure u too got a bunch of relatives in Kuku, Chibolya and the like…

  15. Truth be told, these are illegal settlements that were mainly left by UNIP and have spiralled out of control. The areas like Kanyama are on a sitting on land that has poor drainage .A long term solution is required. One of these options is to evict all residents but this politically a challenge. It is easy for us all to criticise and say our leaders are f00ls, however this is a major problem with historical roots thats has history way before this regime and its has serious political conotations

  16. Mr Mulenga the political players have NOT played their role. They have wrong priorities. This was a country building non essential stadiums for all africa games while its people suffer floods, having a challenger jet for RB while the British PM flies commercial to save taxpayers money, spending on a brand new limo for RB when the British PM rides a more modest car and NY and London mayors ride bikes or trains to work yet Lusaka mayor costs us dear. Our political players big egos don’t allow them sacrifices and they haven’t played their roles.Lies, lies and politics of poverty.

  17. The affected poor people will only be relieved of these and other ills when the Lord comes, not alab nor serter nor any other politician. its a hope in futility. all politicians are same, greed, exploiters, self centered, name them. Its either my relatives in these compounds work hard or remain in their poor nomadic life until the rightful ruler takes over the rulership of the earth.

  18. Please, where goes the tax i pay?

We know the rain comes every year, we know it floods every year, and WE KNOW the drainage system in Zambia does not exist. Every year we dig new drainage. ati drainage. mwafundaula itipa ati we are digging new drainage. we are forever building expensive roads which last less than a year. please please, leaders. Tmwakatako nensoni fye olo panono?

  19. Do not blame the government on the floods , but rather blame the oeople who have built illegal stractures in the areas mentioed in the article. Those places mentioned were left vacant by city planners for a reason. Those are stony areas and water never sinks when it rains. The best area to build is Lusaka East and parts of the north. Be warned that if bought a plot in Kamwala south you will have this problem every year.

  20. Ba LT the correct word is cooperation and not corporation. Its sad that floods have now become like an annual ceremony. surely last season’s floods were enough lesson to the local authority to do something b4 the onsett of the rains. Now bafigili are urging residents to relocate Is it that simple?

  21. Too much foolish talk from MMD cadres. Can any one of you MMD cadres mention one council in Zambia that is independent of the Ministry of Local Government? Your foolish accusations is like saying the that since UTH is Lusaka, we should blame PF for its failures. You have chosen to forget that councils have no source of income since FTJ sold all houses to tenants. You have forgotten that even water is now in private hands and the councils have to go to MoLG to beg. Banda and all MMD have made it very difficult for PF run councils to function. This is a documented fact. When Sata was governor of Lusaka, you are the same imbeciles that sang praising songs for his hard work. You don’t want Sata to be President fearing he brings real development. All Banda does is scratching the surface.

  22. Ministry of Local Government…we still believe in you. You can do it! You are the one! Arise and soar! Spread your tenticles and resusitate this city. Do not abandone your first born as though in a pit latrine. Claim your place governing body! Save your people today.

  23. Much to my surprise gvt and opposition pulling in opposite direction hence NO development as each try to frustrate another party to wine people’s support.. Final the people suffers watching two bull elephants on each other’s throat. # 11 you have a point

  24. … to win people’s support … e.g developing zambia in 90 days,… freely Chiluba if elected.. now condemning those who acquitted him… watch out against deceitful politicians hungry for leadership gain.

  25. iliche! so its back to Independence Stadium and free food and accomodation. plus ensure to supply enough condoms cos the tents get very cold in the night. Plus we also dont want to see ‘divers’ from other compunds which have not been mentioned above. especially baku Chazanga, Mandevu, Chaisa Chipata na Marapodi, bavuta maningi!
