Zambia shuts down social media sites after huge voter turn out

Share

All the popular social media sites in Zambia have become inaccessible today as millions of voters turned up to vote.

Facebook which is the most popular social media platform in Zambia was down just after lunch hour followed by Twitter and WhatsApp.

Only Signal is available via Virtual Private Network.

Many users of the social media platforms have been left shocked with the sudden shut down of social media at a time when information sharing was most critical.

At the time of publishing, both ZICTA and the Zambian government could not be contacted for a comment.

Huge lines have been formed in several parts of the country in an election which is expected to record the highest number of voter turnout.

  1. Blunder, people are still voting. All those doubters will definitely vote otherwise. Midway through your proposal to your girlfriend you get distracted by a big booty walking past….lol

  2. I’m not really surprised by this decision but I’m disappointed all the same. The sleepy opposition parties and their lawyers are to blame at least in part. You don’t seek assurances of internet availability from the ECZ because it’s beyond their mandate. But somehow the opposition did it.

  3. Final kick from ECL and his PF to the Zambian people. True colours of an out-going dictator. It’s okay, HH will reinstate social media when he steps in soon.

  6. Jackson Kungo has been hacked to death by UPND cadres, they might kill some more. It’s only UPND members who’ll insult you and even hack but still ask you to vote for Bally. May God curse them

  7. What do we expect from a failing leader desperately trying to cling to power via every crooked way possible? He brings shame upon the entire country.

  11. RIP Kungo, sad news, really sad. Lungu and ECZ have antagonised the people. Anyone can be a suspect, that’s very dangerous. He behaved like this during the Gassing. Quiet most times and sarcastic comments when addressing national matters. You’re leading a Nation iwe mambala.

  15. Let it be done for the safety of our nation. We only have one Zambia. This country is bigger than one party or tribe that thinks they are above every one else. Hh dontcare because if war starts he will run away with his stolen billions to Europe

  16. Good move a lot of rubbish are being transmitted through this so called social media. Too bad people with genuine business are affected. An innocent man, father, uncle has lost his life on false suspicion. I lost my uncle in Mazabuka in similar ways. Your leaders are asking you to guard your vote but you are now killing for a vote you have not seen.

  17. Indeed the Lungu regime was a continuation of the kaunda era, “Lesa kumulu Kaunda panshi!”

Which other regime did we ever experience corruption, cadreism and violations of human rights such as this?

Lungu’s era had ushered in a culture of lawless governance of this country right from low level positions right up to his office.

We keep hearing that politics is not worth dying for. But politics is not worth killing for either!

  19. Their planned this a long time ago with ECZ, that’s why they bought those phones they put on the plane together with ballots. It’s the same reason they started distributing phones yesterday and this morning. Just watch them so they don’t stuff marked ballots in the booths

  21. Shutting down social media is the reason Zambians will NOT allow ECL to rule Zambia. Using such tactics will NOT deter the Zambian people from VOTING for CHANGE. These are the last strews to try and hold a grip on the Zambians. Guess what Zambians have already made up their minds and do NOT want PF. Today Zambians voted in the thousands for CHANGE.

ECL underestimated the POWER of the Younger generation.

  22. Truth be told in a sharp fair and sharp clear manner. Even rigging is not possible this time. They will end up rigging their own votes at last.

  23. I doubt it if the government has shut these major social media applications; but it remans true that they admitted yesterday that they will shut the internet.
The owners of these media houses are the ones who have tweaked the technology to accuse grz.

  25. Well, Master Sargent Samuel Kanyon Doe tried the same stinking toilet political acrobatic until a piece of dung landed on his face and Yommie Johnson severed off his dick and ears before blasting him to death. This fate awaits someone in zambia if they don’t Zwaaaaaa!

  26. Tomorrow morning you will find State House EMPTY, with Edgar China Lungu GONE, fled over the border with his tail between his legs! Typical COWARDLY behaviour from lying PF led by the horribly incompetent Edgar China Lungu! Bye bye we won’t miss you!

  30. @Nemwine it is based off the writing on the wall. It’s is not Rocket Science to figure out that Zambians have lost their faith in ECL and have come out in the thousands to VOTE for CHANGE. ECL has underestimated the POWER of the PEOPLE.

In a few hours from now you will know for yourself that Zambians have spoken and have booted ECL out. Today is a New ERA for ZAMBIA.

    One Zambia One Nation.

  31. No Zambia is Peaceful. We peacefully bring down tribalistic hate speech regimes who think by devising us they can win more votes forgetting that what unites this great Zambia Republic is the price & love we have in our diverse rich culture under the motto “One Zambia One Nation” waloba iya uma Bye the whole virtual rally was about tribalistic hate speech by the speakers trying to bring this rich God given country onto anarchy that’s the rally that made me make up my mind as to who to vote for.

  32. No Zambia is Peaceful. 33. Yes the virtual rally speech was the final nail in the coffin…If I were him, I should have just stayed home and drink my self to pass out until the results came out.
    He really screwed him self.
Thank you God. I can’t wait to see Kampyongo go to jail… that fool thought Zambia was is own son.

  34. Right now PF is cooking up votes. Wake up people!!! Counting in such a small country like ours should not take more that 2 days to announce the winner. If it takes more than 1 week to announce the results then just know the results are being cooked. Internet is just for sharing information and not a solution to avoid rigging. My point is that if Internet is switched off it simply means that our votes are being stolen. Concourt is not gonna help us… So, what are we gonna do?

  35. We stated that Davies Mwila is a big liability to PF victory. No one bothered to listen. Now Lungu has lost because he was leading us on a road to no where. The Tububa he insulted twamuvotela out of power. Full stop.

  36. There is no way anyone can cook results What we are receiving is what is from the polling stations, which were counted in the presence of agents, ECZ and Monitors. Wait for results patiently.
