TIZ tells Shikapwasha to reason with media

Share

Lt. Gen. Ronnie Shikapwasha

Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has called on Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Ronnie Shikapwasha to reason with the media fraternity and ensure that self regulation of the media in the country prevails.

TIZ Executive Director Goodwell Lungu said in an interview that the state control of the media has a negative impact on the operations of the industry.

Mr. Lungu said government has capacity to control the media to its advantage which has made it difficult for practitioners working in the state media to operate objectively.

He has appealed to Lt Gen Shikapwasha not to be hostile over self regulation of the media adding that the dialogue the minister is suggesting has failed to yield positive results.

This comes in a wake of General Shikapwasha’s statement that government will not recognize the Zambia Media Council (ZAMEC) that is set to be launched by the Media Liaison Committee (MLC) and other media bodies on the basis that the media council is not inclusive and will not help the media industry and the country as a whole.

  1. Ronnie does not intend to reason with anyone. For him the bloodbath has already started. Paza officials working in the public media are being victimized. Already, there is a rumour that the Paza president is being retired from the Times of Zambia. Alelaba ati Today it’s you, Tomorrow it’s me.

  2. Lets think outside the box. What is wrong with statutory reulation as long as iy incorporates the tenets of good journalism practises

  3. TIZ rueben lifuka you speak for one man fred mmembe and the post they are the ones who resist media journalism. Membe isnt a journalist thats why he preaches gutter journalism. whats the fear of regulation when all other proffessional bodies are regulated, nurses and nursing council of zambia, lawyers and law association of zambia, doctors and health workers and medical council of zambia etc. Reuben you stink and you have no spine to stand on your own. your predessesor was a man MHSRIP

  4. Lets regulate the media and since we gave them so much time to do it and they have resisted it through mmembe its time we made rules to govern journalism. thats why we now have post trainee journalist from bwinjimfumu school of gutter journalism. Look at the post its lined with pipo who have never been to evelyn hone or unza masscom. time has come bring in media control like everyone else

  5. The Journalists in Zambia have shown that they do NOT have the capacity to act professionally, especially those from The Post. Statutory media regulation will help grow the media profession and help the practitioners accrue respect as compared to the stature given to other professional bodies such as LAZ, EIZ and ZICA. Due to lack of a professional body, journalists only succumb and believe in the opinion of their bosses who mostly are not journalists and are there to foster their personal agendas. For example The Post will spearhead the mind of Mmembe regardless of the ethical and moral position of an item they are reporting. Some stories are clearly lies and imaginations of a sick mind that are only sheilded by the pretext that they have a right not to disclose the sources.

  6. Lady Gaga i have not seen Lifuka mentioned in the above article, why are you referring a person who has not made the statement?!

And as for media regulation all the civilized, developed countries on earth have self media regulation..asking the government to regulate the media is the same as asking a greedy pig to share food!!

  7. #7, Lady Gaga’s reference to Reuben is well understood. After all, what is the difference between what the two would say?

  8. TIZ and Goodwell Lungu, tell us how anybody can reason with unreasonable people like mmembe. I am sure that you are only suggesting that because you fear to be on mmembe’s wrong side. Well for your information, there many courageous people out there than spineless men like you. Most people were for self regulation but now after what we have seen of this abuse of press freedom,.media compusory regulation it shall be.
