President Biden nominates Zambian-American for top USAID job

Share

President Biden has announced his intent to nominate Zambian-American Dr. Monde Muyangwa for the position of Assistant Administrator for the Africa Bureau at USAID – US Agency for International Development.

Dr. Muyangwa currently serves as the Director of the Africa Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a position that she has held since 2014.

In this capacity, she leads the Center’s programs on African democracy and governance; conflict management and peacebuilding; trade, investment, and sustainable development; and Africa’s evolving role in the global arena.

Dr. Muyangwa has over 23 years of senior-level experience on Africa and U.S-Africa relations.

Prior to joining the Wilson Center, Dr Muyangwa served as Academic Dean at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) at the National Defense University from 2002 to 2013 where she led and managed the Center’s programs on security studies, counter-terrorism and transnational threats, civil–military relations, defense economics, and conflict management.

From 1997 to 2000, she worked as Director of Research, and then Vice President for Research and Policy, at the National Summit on Africa where she led a policy-oriented nation-wide dialogue on Africa that culminated in a National Policy Plan of Action for US-Africa Relations.

A widely-cited authority on governance, security, and development issues, Dr. Muyangwa challenges dominant narratives about the continent.

She holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the University of Oxford (England), as well as a B.A. in Public Administration and Economics from the University of Zambia.

She was a Rhodes Scholar, a Wingate Scholar, and the University of Zambia Valedictory Speaker for her graduating class.

Monde is a Zambia-born immigrant and long-time resident of Bowie in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

  1. Congratulations to her but I don’t see how this benefits the average Zambian citizen. We praise people for getting a job when we should celebrate those who start their own businesses more. I would rather be an employer than an employee. That is just my personal view.

  2. I do agree with you Kaizar. This has nothing to do with Zambia. Moreover her allegiance has been pledged to the Americans and Biden only.
Kenya had celebrated Obama little did they know he’s not there to serve them but ask them to consider gay rights. Pure American.
Maybe she doesn’t even know where Zambia is.

  3. KZ there’s nothing great about you.You were just an Opportunist aboard the PF Corrupt Criminal Enterprise of a Government gravy train .If I was you ,I would seriously wide my neck in,because the day of reckoning is approaching fast .

Impressive! Very educated and progressive Zambians out there contributing to the development process of other countries. There’s been lots of brain drain due to previous incompetent governments just preoccupied by stealing and dancing in front of cadres. All these smart people could be directly contributing to our success as a nation. But at least she sounds like she’s had Africa’s back and interests in her storied career… well done Bo Dr Muyangwa and congratulations on your appointment.
LT, these are the types of people we should be reading about to get inspired, and not politicians every day of the week, 24/7.

  5. Congrats to her and to USA . At least this is a merit-based appointment unlike the political cadre appointments PF made in Zambia .

  6. Stupidity is celebrating the employment of someone who is not Zambian. As if she even pays taxes to zambia. I was surprised to see that even hh a whole president was congratulating someone who is not Zambian.
